Last year I started having severe soreness/pain in the top of my foot at the base of the big toe every time I played tennis. At the time I was using Babolat SFX shoes (I have size 2E feet and they advertised a wide toe box).

I switched to Hoka Bondi 8s as they are known to help with this condition. All my foot pain went away. The problem is these shoes are not built for tennis. The toe wears out quickly and I worry about risk of injury from lack of ankle support.

I am seeking recommendations (shoes and/or inserts) from others with big toe pain.

Try hunting down the nike GP turbo. It has a rigid toe box that prevents the toe region from fully flexing

Additionally, it has terrific full length cushion

I've been dealing with sesamoiditis among a host of other foot issues due to my high arches and have settled on Court FF 2's (I believe they are discontinued but I can't imagine FF 3's would be much different) with Tread Labs dash insoles. In the house I walk around in oofos sandals to make sure I minimize the pressure on my pain areas. Best of luck on finding something that will work for you.
