Hello im not sure if there's any musicians in here but im in trouble here, ive been wanting to start learning to play either the E Guitar or the E Bass.. i love both of them and i know a bit of guitar.. i know some solos and other songs hehe, but the bass looks very interesting and so does the guitar, i like both of them..

so musicians.. anyway to see which one i really do like? can any guitar or bass player tell me the good and bad things about each instrument?

thx

As a guitar player myself my advice would be to try them both out and choose which one YOU enjoy playing more. This is too much of a personal choice.

Also, no reason why you can't learn both, and master one. >>> or Both :)

Good luck!

i like both man, i would love to learn both, i know some guitar though i just need practice.. and yeah andres theres a lot of guitarists around here, thats why i wanna play bass too, cause its going to be something different.. i just found out that a good friend of mine has a bass, but he doesnt play it he is now into drums.. ill ask him

thx for the reply guys

Why don't you try different instruments?
Like the electric stick?

That's one heck of a good instrument. Only 5000 stickists in the world ;)

Tony Levin...the best "stickist" out there. If I could go back in time, I'd probably take up this instrument.

Hell yeah, Phil !!
I remember his work with Peter Gabriel and King Crimson ;)
Nice catch there!

I met Guillermo Cides in a conference in Buenos Aires. He gave a clinic. That guy was goooood!!

There are a lot of guitarists out there, but I love it. If you're going to be playing by yourself, I'd say guitar is better because you can learn your favorite songs and solo, etc. You can also go out and buy a bunch of expensive gear - my favorite part  . When you listen to most popular songs, the guitar parts are what stick out and are fun to learn, as many bass parts are simplistic and mainly there for rhythm purposes. You can of course write your own music and join a band playing bass though.

But if you are really going to try to learn bass and are prepared to put a lot into it, there's nothing like a good slap bassist, which I've always wanted to learn. Slap bass is one of the coolest things you can do as a musician IMO.

Check out Levin and Crimson on some vids on YouTube...I'm afraid I'm becoming a YouTube music video addict. Oh well, I guess it's better than trolling the Internet for porn:)

I'll have to check out Cides...read about him, but I need to hear some of his stuff. Thanks for the reminder.

id love to play like that but that guy'sbeen playing for like 7 or 8 years..

and i read somewhere, "the bass is one of the easiest instruments to learn to play, but one of the hardest to master"

well, it is moderately difficult to start playing an instrument for the first time, but it's better to start on something easier like the piano to get a feel for reading notes and rhythms. i play the acoustic/classical and electric guitar, and it has loads of variety, you can play rock, jazz, blues, classical, bossa nova etc., but i dont think that the bass has much variety. i started the guitar recently after playing the piano for about 8 years (still play now, studying grade 6 now), and i found it really easy to start because i knew all the chords etc. etc. choose what you want to go, go with what you think is good, it's your choice.

personally, i'd love to play the ukulele. it's a really cool instrument to have because you can take it with you and stuff, and you can play really fun tunes on it. very cheap too, compared to the electric guitar and bass.

if you are getting one of those two you wanted, then buy a decent guitar, not some cheap guitar, because cheap guitars and basses need constant maintenance, and are a bad value for money. i personally like the acoustic guitar better, because it is better for genres of music. you can basically play a whole range of music, from guns n roses to bj thomas. they are a lot cheaper than electric guitars, and when you think you are ready, you can buy an electric guitar.

a really good site (includes pictures and reviews) to buy any musical instrument, from electric guitars to double bassoons: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/
you can buy musical instruments from there, but i don't because i live far away from america.

Both instruments are cool, the bass will come easier IMO, but remember the lead guitarists get the girls

If you want to take the Les Claypool 'express lane to fame' go with the bass. Here's why:

Once upon a time, a man bought his son an electric bass guitar for the son's 15th birthday. The music store included 4 coupons with the guitar, each coupon good for one free lesson. Days later, the son arrived home after his 1st lesson and his father asked him how it went. The son replied: "Dad! I learned the first 5 notes of the 'E' string." The father enthusiastically congratulated him and encouraged him to practice and progress. The next week, the son returned from his 2nd lesson and again his father asked him how it went. The son said: "This week, I learned the first 5 notes of the 'A' string!" Again the father offered his congratulations and encouragement.

The following week: the son is nowhere to be seen. Finally, he arrives home at 4:30 in the morning smelling of cigarettes and beer. The frantic father asks him: "Son where have you been and what happened with this week's lesson?" And the son replied: "Oh, sorry about the lesson dad.....I had a gig."

And that, my Jaco Pastorius friend, is "base" humor.

i dont plan on getting into any bands, a friend plays the drums tho, and some friend the guitar.. but i just want to play it while listening to music on my pc, mp3 player etc..

im starting to like the bass even more now that people said "there are millions of guitarists out there" im sure theres a few million bassist too but not as many as guitar players..

i think ill go with th ebass guys but plz keep comenting

Just play the Sitar, you can't go wrong.

Unless you suck at it.

Learn some fingerstyle guitar and the bass will be alot more approachable. It's all about what you have the most fun doing so you're just going to have to try stuff out and figure it out in time.

wow yesterday a lot of people said bass (not on these forums though) and now everyone is saying guitar. confused mode ON

I don't recall any musician deciding on what instrument he should play by asking the question of a bunch of strangers on an Internet chat board. They choose guitar or bass or keyboards or drums, based on their musical tastes, innate ability or, simply put, what sounded cool to them. If you're "confused" then maybe music is not for you...learn how to play tiddley winks or something. Play what YOU want to play. It's up to YOU-based on what your EARS tell you.

well my ears tell me, play guitar! but hten they say PLAY TH EBASS! i hate this it was the same when i bought my racquet, K95 NO NO NO the APD!, i asked the guy at the shop for advice and ended up with the k95, could be more happy with it

Do what your ears tell you. And you never know...a lot of great bass players started out as guitar players...and lots of others play multiple instruments. It's up to YOU. It's nothing even remotely like buying racquets.

I'd ask yourself - do you like being front and center, in other words the center of attention, or you one of those support mode type guys who likes being in the backround more. The bass player is the core that holds the band together by keeping the band in time, groove etc, which is *very* essential.

I agree, I started on the bass and moved to guitar...I am not that great at either but I can play both.

Really, if you can play one, you should be able to learn to be proficient at playing the other.

Furthermore, playing chords on the bass was slightly easier for me when I first started out because of the string spacing.

The acoustic guitar is great, because you can do so much with it. It can be the only instrument a song needs, and you can constantly learn tunes off the radio etc, and also just down load guitar tabs from the net of pretty much any rock song you like. You can also jam with friends, play at parties and take it wherever. You cant go wrong learning the guitar.

BUT, as mentioned above, there are soooo many guitar players out there, that if you have an inclination to go far with an instrument I would say there are a lot more opportunities for bass players. The bass player is frequently the missing link when you get together to play with friends.

But (again) if you are young and want to learn basic music note and chord reading and you have an opportunity to do it, the piano is a great first instument from which you can move on to other instruments. I took piano lessons as a young kid, and still visualize the piano keyboard when figuring out new guitar chords etc.

i used to play the piano loooong ago 4th grade... if rgot everything but i learned it fast and i was good at it.. i think that after all this thinking im finally making my desicion.. which i think its the bass.. because is something new, that i havent tried yet, and if i dont like it, i still know how to play guitar (not much tho)
