Just over a year ago after Rafa won his 9th French title, I gave him the slight nod over Roger due to getting to within 3 of Fed and the dominant head to head record. I fully expected Rafa to get to at least 16-18 majors. Now, I don't think that will happen. And Fed...he just keeps playing so well at almost 34.
He's absolutely incredible. Novak is almost SIX years younger and today's result was expected. But, when you look at Roger's durability, his 86 titles, 26 grand slam titles, his 37 slam semis or better, his 9 year end final appearances and SIX year end titles...his 41 Masters' level finals and 23 titles there, all of his number one year end rankings....it's phenomenal.
At ages 32 and 33, Roger has gotten to 20 tournament finals...TWENTY...and has won half of them. This is at ages 32 and 33 and he comes this close to winning Wimbledon at almost 34...it's astonishing. How his body holds up, how he paces himself, how incredibly quick and agile he STILL is, how his serve has actually improved as well as his net play...amazing.
Connors and Lendl won a few more tournaments, but Roger has more than doubled their grand slam titles. And, we all know he's a more talented player overall than Laver, who is clearly in the top 5 of all time. Unless Rafa turns it back on, which is doubtful with his injuries, style of play and being an "old" 29 and unless Novak can get up to 14 or 15 majors...which he might, Roger is CLEARLY the greatest of all time.
