Jannik Sinner returns to tournament play later today in the men's qualifying event for this year's Wimbledon. The 17-year-old Italian will take on the 26-year-old Australian Alex Bolt in a first-round encounter between two unseeded players. The winner of that match will face either the Austrian Dennis Novak, the no 14. seed, or Thiemo de Bakker of The Netherlands.

Jannik Sinner has been missing some Challenger tournaments in Italy in recent weeks due to his premature attempts to gain some experience on grass. His attempt at qualifying for Wimbledon was ill-advised -- he's still quite far from that level. Some more success in Challenger tournaments would help both his ranking and his confidence.

What a great comeback win for my favorite Sinner. Breadsticked by Pedro Sousa at Umag 1R, and being down an opening game break in the second set was not enough to keep him from earning the 1-6 6-3 6-4 win.
Jannik traded breaks in the decisive third set before getting a second break at 4-4 and then serving it out.
He will play Slovenian Aljaz Bedene in 2R. The veteran upset #5 seed Marco Cecchinato in straight sets today.

Not sure if anyone got to see this latest Sin Win, but "the wrong Sousa" was playing out of his frickin' mind. The way Gianni turned this match around was absolutely riveting. Can't wait till he gets to the hard courts... gonna be one heck of a ride.

Not sure about Vancouver, heard some rumors about a possible wild card for Cincy (??? maybe qualies?)
As for the fall, I couldn't tell you. But I somehow doubt he'll stay in America after the USO. Not sure he'll want to be away from his home base that long. I suspect he'll come back for a few good weeks of training and maybe play a couple of Italian challengers in September (including in my hometown of Florence... one can always hope).
Or, he may be in the top-80 by then.

Indeed: only one break in the third set. Also, Sinner did not have set point on his own serve (lost serve to 30 at 5-3) but rather on Krueger's serve at 5-4. All in all, another poor performance by Jannik, who showed flashes of utter dominance but was far to erratic and could never get it done on big points. Chalk it up to age, inexperience, surface change (court seemed VERY fast), culture shock or a bad beef on weck... whatever the case, I'm not too worried.
Now it's on to Lexington where he'll be one of the top 8 seeds (maybe even top 4, depending on WCs/pull-outs). Should do better.

Having been 4-5, 15-30 down to Alexey Zahkarov overnight due to rain at the Challenger in Lexington on Tuesday, Jannik Sinner quickly dropped serve when play resumed on Wednesday morning, thereby losing the first set. After that, however, the Italian played much better, winning nine of the next ten games, and never looking back as he completed a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 second-round victory.

This Cressy dude is annoying with his fiery shrieking after key shots but he’s fearless, charging the net to press Jannik for the pass and it has worked. Let’s see if he has anything in the tank for the third...already three shirt changes.

As expected, Cressy folded like a cheap suit in an overstuffed case, 6-4 6-7(10) 6-1 for The Sinnerman.

Yes, I watched the match and his lack of experience in handling a wholly different style, especially in key stages of the match, was fully on view. The raw talent is not enough to get deep in ATP draws yet. He also needs to pay the off court dues and bulk up a bit but the really insightful commentary by Challenger broadcaster Mike Cation hinted at possible burnout symptoms on display last week at Binghamton, something about taking away some of his joy. His crew needs to monitor closely and not push too hard too early.

Ah well, I wasn't suggesting we should stop following him... I get withdrawl symptoms after a couple days! I just think that rankings shouldn't be a priority right now.
Regarding Sinner's strength training, they are indeed working him very hard, and he's already put on at least 8-12 pounds since the start of the year. Which, frankly, I find a bit perplexing... Now, I'm no expert, but is it really advisable to work so hard on bulking up a (very slim-built) kid when he still has a number of years to grow and fill out on his own? Wouldn't you want to focus mostly on cardio, movement, athletic skills and - of course - technique, and then worry about mass once he's about 20 or so?
As far as Cation's comment, he mentioned having seen him in Binghamton after being eliminated, and apparently he was training like crazy... many many hours every day. Hence his comment about "losing the joy of it" or whatever. But honestly, I'm pretty sure it's Jannik himself who wants to put in the work. He's not exactly your average Instagrammin' teenager. He seems 100% focused on tennis and has no other interests other than becoming... very good. However, as you say, they should definitely keep an eye on any possible red flags... But I trust he's in very good hands (Riccardo Piatti and his team - you just can't do any better than that in Italy).

The bulk, as long as it’s not an excessive buildup, should insulate him better from muscle/joint injury due to his rapid increase in court time. The thought is to make everything stronger so power requires less exertion. He has to be getting equal attention to kinesiology to make it effective though. You don’t bulk up just to be big.
I still think to this day that young fedr’s luckiest day of his life was the one when someone introduced him to Pierre Paganini. He is such a genius at getting tennis players ready for the strength they need AND the range of motion they will perform.

Jannik needs time in the Sin Bin after giving away the first set to Lee. He had BP in the initial game, was broken in the second game, went nine deuces in the third game without punching through, then settled down to hold a couple of times before breaking to 3-4 with great returning. One hold each put him on the line at 4-5, a service game he dumped by serving a couple of DFs to set up the break and the set.

Jannik served a long deuce game and eventually held after playing some great defense on a BP. Then another long deuce game on Lee’s serve went Jannik’s way for the 2-0 lead. During the game Lee asked the chair for a trainer’s visit at the changeover and then pretty much tanked the return game for a 3-0 Sinner lead.

Lee did well to scratch out a game after his leg problem. The trainer’s second visit after Sinner took a 5-0 lead gave him just enough to hold serve and then courageously forced Sinner to serve it out, 4-6 6-3 6-1.

Aptos Challenger draw is out and we’re looking at a totally different level of depth...from being seeded #3 in Lexington to no seed and thus an extra round. Jannik has drawn Aussie Maverick Banes 1R and the winner then plays #5 seed American Björn Fratangelo.

Aptos is indeed a different level, but frankly I wouldn't be shocked if he pulled out - especially having to play that extra round as early as tomorrow, or Tuesday at the latest...
I also believe his ranking will be higher than what has been reported, thanks to the ITF point "restitutions" which should come into effect tomorrow.
But it seems like nobody really knows for sure what the heck is going on there, so I guess we'll just have to wait and see...
