Some interesting matchups this weekend-tough ones for the young former collegians:
Cam Norrie vs Opelka (Sat)
JJ Wolf (in his 1st ATP main draw) vs Gasquet. JJ beat a guy ranked #104 in 3 sets today but beating Gasquet who is #50 will be much more of a challenge-Gasquet beat #20 Paire in February.
Mackie Mac vs Giron in an all UCLA 1st rounder-winner has to take on Medvedev in 2nd rd
Older former collegians Isner, Sandgren, and Kevin Anderson are also in the draw.
JJ has won quali matches when the W&S was played in Cincy, but this is the first time he qualified all the way to the main draw. If he doesn't win this weekend, he has another chance with his WC to US Open main draw.
Of course the non-collegiate match everyone will want to see is Murray vs Tiafoe on Saturday. The guys who won in the final round of qualifying dont play until Sunday. Unfortunately former collegians Steve Johnson lost in the Qualis as did Brandon Nakashima. However Nakashima is playing doubles with American Sebastian Korda tomorrow.
Matches are on Tennis Channel, ESPN, ESPN2-dont know if all the courts will be covered. I hope JJ's match will be televised on Sunday-I've been a fan since watching JJ as a freshman in NCAA team champs in Athens in 2017 when he lost a close one to Rybakov of TCU. I watched the boys 2017 Kzoo 18s final (on TV-part of it) when Wolf lost to Kypson in 5 sets. Now 3 years later Wolf is ranked #150, and Kypson is ranked 670-he last played a $15K Future in Turkey.
