Former long time Asics Gel Res users, what shoe did you move to ?

I've been a long time Asics Gel Res user. The change in the size/fit (narrower/longer) starting with GR6 was an inconvenience, however, I was able to adapt by going down a half size and going with their GR6-Wide shoe. In fact, it turned out that the GR6-Wide might be my favorite GR.

I haven't tried the GR7 because of reviews that complain they are too narrow. Additionally, the Wide option was discontinued with GR7. (Note: my feet are not particularly "wide". I usually wear a D width just fine)

Anyway, I've always stocked up with the various GR's, but I'm now down to my last pair of GR6-Wide.

For long time Asics GR users who didn't/don't like the narrower fit of the GR6 and/or GR7, what shoe did you move to ?

Well, if you're a woman you can do what I did and just buy the men's; they fit me fine when I found the women's to be too narrow. If you're a dude you should really order a pair of the Gel 7s - just try them on and walk around the room a bit. They do open up after about half and hour and since your foot isn't wide, you might find that they do fit after all. If its obvious they don't fit just send them back. TW doesn't charge a restocking fee and they include a pre-paid UPS label so you really have nothing to lose by trying.

As for other shoes, I just bought a pair of Nike Zoom Zeros and I like the cushioning underfoot, but quality of the shoe is not as good as Asics.

Have you tried Adidas Ubersonic 2? I was a long-time Asics Speed Solution user and switched to Uber 2's. Find them while you can. The Uber 3 is way too wide.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm a dude. There's an Asics store in my area, so I'll follow your suggestion and try them on and try to assess if I think they'll open up. While there, I'll also try on the Gel Court FF and Gel Solution Speed FF. I really hope one of these will work out.

If not, after looking at the reviews and/or comments, I'll likely try the adidas adizero Ubersonic 3, Babolat SFX3, and/or Diadora Speed Blushield 2 AG.

Also thanks to @TahoeTennis and @Lex for the suggestions. It looks like the SS2 is hard to find, which means I would have to buy it without trying it on first. It appears the Adidas Ubersonic 2 is still available in limited sizes (TW doesn't have my size) so I'll look into those as well.

Overall, I'm trying to find a current shoe which is easier to try on before buying and also easier to stock up on if I like them.

I wore Resolution 6’s for a while. I had big problems with heel slipping. I moved on to the Ubersonic 2’s, which mostly eliminated the heel issue. Eventually I tried the Court FF. My shoe search is over. The Court FF is the best tennis shoe I’ve ever worn, period. To me it’s only downside compared to the Resolutions is there is no sole guarantee. That implies the durability of the Court FF isn’t up to par with the Resolutions...but I haven’t observed a huge difference.

As for the Speed FF’s, I’ve heard of some folks experiencing some discomfort wearing them...which is enough to scare me off, and have me continuing to stock up on Court FF’s.

Final point - of course the Court FF’s are expensive, compared to the others. But they are so worth it IMO.

Do you know if they are as narrow as either the GR6 or 7 ?

It's a tough call for me to make, as it's been quite a while since I wore the GR6's (never wore the GR7). I do believe there's more room in the toe box in the FF's, than I recall there being with the GR6. Edit - even with me wearing a half size smaller in the FF, than I usually would with most other shoes.

I have a wide toebox and haven’t had any issues with the GR7 at all, even with a custom orthotic. I used wear Prince T22.

I tried an Ubersonic a couple years ago and it was super narrow thru the forefoot.

After play testing a number of comparable shoes, I went to the Nike Court Zoom Zero - and loving it. Great combination of comfort, stability, and mobility.

I moved over to the Kswiss ultrashots. They have a wider fit in the forefoot, and have a great level of underfoot cushion.

I was a GR6-Wide user and ran out as well.
Moved on to babolat SFX3. Really like the cushioning, much better than the Asics. Lighter as well. Not as stable laterally but that's fine for me since I play mostly doubles and mostly on clay so hard stops aren't too frequent. Fit is fabulous for anyone in the D to 2E range.

So TL;DR:
Better mobility and comfort but reduced stability.

So I was able to try on the KSwiss Hypercourt Express and the Prince T-22.

The KSwiss was certainly wide enough, and was light and comfortable overall. However, I thought the padding in the forefoot area was lacking. A friend who uses this KSwiss agreed with this feeling, however, he said never notices this when he's playing. I held off on this one for now.

The Prince T-22 was surprising. It felt like a very substantial shoe, especially for its discounted price of $80. It also felt very comfortable. My only knock was it felt a bit heavy, which is why I held off on buying it, though I still might.

I also had a chance to try on the Asics Gel Res 7 and Court FF, both at 10.5, which is a half size lower than I used to wear with the GR1 thru 5. The shorter length felt much better than my normal 11. They both felt a bit narrow, but not too bad and both felt like they would likely stretch out. I tried them on at an Asics store that only sells at full price. So, I went ahead and bought a pair of the Gel Res 7 at a discounted price on-line. I should get them sometime later this week.

If I can get the Court FF at a discount price close to what I can get the GR7's for, then I'd like to give those a try.

If the Asics don't work out, I'll likely look into the other shoes mentioned in this thread. Thanks to all for the suggestions and feedback.

I was a Gel Resolution 5 and 6 long time user then i switched to Gel Solution Speed 3. Love how quick it feels around the court and yet still so comfortable. Lately i have added Nike Cage 3 to the collection, i must say...by far it is the best Nike tennis shoes for me over Vapor 9.5 Tour and Vapor X Tour.

2 weeks ago just got Court FF at a discounted price. Can't wait to try in on court but boy it is indeed pretty hard to put on and i don't even have wide feet.

I wear size 8 in all the Gel Resolution 5 6 and Solution Speed 3 but 8.5 in Zoom Cage 3.
Should have got the 7.5 for Court FF, it does indeed has plenty of toebox room. Let's see if i can fix it with...the lacing for double socks.

Arrghh. I received my Asics Gel Res 7's today. And even though 10.5 seemed to fit well at the Asics store, the pair I received today feels too tight. I doubt they can stretch out enough to fit comfortable, but I'll give them a few days of walking around on carpet.

Very disappointing. So after years of wearing Asics size 11 (GR1 thru GR5), size 11 is now too long/narrow and size 10.5 appears to be too short/narrow. Most likely I'm back to the drawing board and will be checking out the various shoes that have been suggested.

I'd really like to find one shoe manufacturer/model that I can count on for at least a couple of years without having to go thru this process again.

I've read great things about it and would love to try it.

If you can send me a pair, I'd love to review it and hopefully move to it !!! :)

Me too! I’ll even shoot on court play test video with a pro formerly sponsored by Mizuno! [emoji56]

A repeat shout out for the Babolat SFX3. I've got one pair that I've played since October on and no sign of breaking down, so despite the mesh upper they seem very durable. I've also found if I replace the OEM insole with a custom insole any slight stability issues disappear. A more molded footbed seems to do well in this shoe.

I had a pair of the sf3 but they were a bit too wide and unstable for my foot. I tried half size less and that did not work either. I play T-22 lites which are good for cushioning but I recently bought a pair of KSWISS ultrashots and I really like them. They have the Ultra shot 2 now which took care of the tongue and vent issues but I decided to get the blue pair of the originals for 80 bucks. If the 2's are like these but have those little issues worked out, I may have found my new shoe.

Anyone try the adidas SoleCourt Boost that is now on sale ? I'm particularly interested in the sizing as it related to the Asics GR's. Based on comments I read, it seems to run a half size large, meaning users need to go down a half size for a true fit.

I'm still playing in GR7 clay version, but on hc I've stock pilled on Nike Lunars (or the former Courtballistecs).

Long time Asics GR wearer myself. I switched to the Nike Air Zoom Zero and low them. Will keep wearing them as long as they're made.

Did you wear the same size in both? How hard are you on your shoes? Is durability an issue with the Zeros?

The saga continues. Today I tried on the shoes below, and then bought one.

1) The Babolat SFX3 in 10.5 (they didn't have my normal 11). They generally felt comfortable, but just a tad too short/tight in the toe for me to take a chance with. I might try on this one in the future in a size 11.

2) KSwiss Hypercourt Express. I had previously tried on a friend's 10.5, which was too tight, so at the store I tried on size 11 and 11.5. Actually both felt good, but there was a bit too much movement in 11.5. A very comfortable shoe that felt stable. For some reason, today I didn't feel a lack of padding in the toe area like I did when I tried them on before.

3) Adidas Barricade 2018 Boost. Size 11. The length and width felt good with a bit of a pinch in the arch. More rigid and not as obviously comfortable as the SFX3 nor the KSwiss. A very stable and solid feel.

4) Adidas Solecourt Boost in 10.5 Again, they didn't have my normal 11. However, they fit pretty well in both length and width. Similar to the Barricade, there was a bit of a pinch in the arch. And more rigid and not as obviously comfortable as the SFX3 nor the KSwiss. A very stable and solid feel.

I liked both Adidas shoes, but went with the KSwiss Hypercourt Express, mainly because of better immediate fit and comfort, but also the price. The KSwiss felt most like the Asics Gel Res.

I understand the durability of the KSwiss is not so great, but since I'm now playing mostly doubles and not singles like I used to, I'm hoping they'll hold up at least like an average shoe. I remember that the principal complaint against the early versions of the Asics Gel Res was their poor durability, which I generally was ok with.

Also, there was pretty big difference with the price. The local store discounted the KSwiss similar to internet pricing, but not the Adidas.

The KSwiss feels great walking around the house, but I'll be giving them the true test later this week when I play. If they feel good playing and durability is at least average, I might be stocking up on these. The guy at the store told me that KSwiss is planning to have at least one more generation of the Hypercourt Express using the same shoe template.

Finally, while I've given up on the Asics Gel Res 7 in 10.5 and 11, last week I did order a pair of the Gel Court FF in a 10.5. I should be receiving it later this week. This will be my last attempt with Asics at least until GR8, as long as they don't fit like GR6 and GR7.

Thanks to all for the input, feedback and suggestions.

Did you size the same as your past Gel Res’s?

Yes. The Zoom Zeros are a tad longer than the Gel Res, but I tried a half size smaller and opted to stay with the same size. They fit much better than the Gel Res IMO - the Sock lining makes a difference.

Well, it turns out that I may have been premature a couple of days ago in thinking that the KSwiss Hypercourt Express might be my new GR replacement shoe.

Yesterday, I received the Asics Gel Court FF in 10.5, which is a half size lower than what used to be my usual Asics GR size 11 (pre GR6 & GR7).

While the GR7 size 10.5 is a bit too short for me (and size 11 too long), the CFF 10.5 seems like the right length for me. The width fit is snug, especially in the mid foot/arch area, which I didn't expect, but not too tight. I'm guessing that has something to do with the booty fit. That said, I do hope they loosen up just a bit. If not, I can use a thinner sock.

The size and fit reminds me a lot of GR2, which I still have an worn pair of that I used to compare. I also compared them to my worn pairs of GR4 and GR6-Wide. The CFF is most similar in fit to my GR2.

As for the comfort, I don't find they're as comfortable on initially trying them on and walking around in them as the KSwiss, but I haven't played with either, so I'll see how that goes.

Also, the CFF feels much lighter than the GR, though that's probably to be expected as they also don't feel as substantially constructed as the GR.

Anyway, I look forward to hitting with both the KSwiss and CFF over the next couple of weeks.

I ordered a pair of Gel Court FF few weeks ago. I immediately found it very comfortable and decided to use it for first time in match (after a first training test of course) tournament. Unfortunately I had a big blisters in the midfoot/arch area during the 1st set cause of my personal insoles. I didn't expect this cause with my previous Gel Res 7 I didn't had this...
I confirm the forefoot is wider than the Gel Res 7 but the midfoot area is more narrow/snug. Now I use my Gel Court FF to the gym and it's ok.

Comparing the two shoes I was a bit bothered by the lightweight feel of the Gel Court FF. The sole and cushioning is different too. The Gel court FF is soft, the sole is more flexible and the cushionig softer than the Gel Resolution 7. I found it more comfortable but less responsive.
The overall impression was like I didn't wear anything and this feeling bothered me.

I replaced my older Gel Res 7 by the Adidas Ubersonic 2, and loved them but not as durable and less cushioned particularly in the forefoot area. But finally it was not a problem cause I felt really connected to the ground, very responsive I loved this feeling. Unfortunately they didn't produce them anymore as they released the new Ubersonic 3 which is completely different...

I also tried the new Mizuno Wave Exceed Tour 3. It's really comfortable but the fit is long and narrow, more than the Gel Res 7. So it's nice for long and narrow feet or if you like snug feeling. As I used personal insoles (orthosis) it was too narrow unfortunately.

Now I'm waiting for my pair of fresh foam lav. I tried it in a retail store and felt really nice. I've just ordered a pair in TW (thanks to my gift cards). I'll tell you if it's better than the Gel Res :p.

Thanks for the KSwiss suggestion I don't really know this brand as it's not very promoted here in France. I'd give it a try in the future also :)

I used to play with the GR6. I really liked it at first because of the stability and comfort, but I eventually had to stop using it because I noticed my knees were getting sore on long matches. I knew it was the shoes because when I switched back to my old T22's the knee pain never went back, and when I'd go back to the GR6's my knee pain would come back. My knee pain is almost always attributable to impact on my joints, so I concluded that even though GR6 feels soft, it doesn't have as much impact protection as some other shoes. The other thing I didn't like about the GR6 was the heel slippage. I had to use a runner's loop to be able to play in it, which made it uncomfortable in that area.

What surprised me about the Court FF's is that they are so completely different. The weaknesses of the GR6 are it's strengths. The impact protection is outstanding. I never once felt knee pain while playing in the Court FF's. They are also the most secure feeling tennis shoes I ever played in. I remember one time my shoe laces unraveled during a point, but I never noticed that it happened until I looked down! The downside to the booty system is it's hard to get your foot into it, but the upside is my heel does not slip at all.

Compared to the GR6, I think the Court FF wins on cushioning, quickness, secure fit, traction on both hard and clay courts, and comfort (because I don't need the runner's loop). The GR6 wins on durability, court feel, and a slight edge on stability.

Did you ever try the Speed 2 or 3? How does the durability compare to those vs the FF? Same?

I never tried the Speeds. I'd probably consider trying the Speed FF's at some point. My main problem with the GR6 was cushioning, and I didn't think the Speed 2 or 3 would address that because they were thought to be less cushioned than the Gel Res series.

I own most of these Asics shoes cause I was a huge fan since de first solution speed. The first one was amazing, glove fit for standard feet. After Asics improved the model cause it was too high off the ground to build a shoe more low to the ground. Last year I bought the Solution Speed 3 but was really disappointed in every point. First one the cheap construction compared to the previous version. Lot of plastic and not enough cushioning inside the shoe as the previous version. It results a not very comfortable and breathable shoe. But the worst thing was how narrow is the toe box. I had terrible blisters with this shoe.
In this time I decided to switch to the Gel Resolution. I ordered the 7's. I felt immediately better than the solution speed 3. I give my review after 8 months : I like the comfort when you put your feet into the shoe, very plushy but the fit is a bit long and narrow. I was a bit disappointed by the stiffness of the outsole. It's very solid and durable but very stiff and need a certain period to break in. And even after break in it remains stiff. In the other hand I liked the relatively flat sole. It's stable and relatively low to the ground. Another bad point is the weight of the shoe. It's a bit heavy but it's ok. The bad point is almost the stiffness of the shoe and the laces which came loose everytime you are playing.

I recently tried the Solution Speed FF but it's the opposite of the Solution Speed 3's. Very wide in the forefoot. Even with my othosis/insoles it remains too wide. The overall shoe is very soft and they changed the cushionig of the shoe by the FF (FlyteFoam). The shoe is very light, more than previous models but I really don't like this odd upper. The upper flexes in your feet when you're walking/running. My overall impression is that they killed the original Solution Speed. The new models are very cheap compared to the old versions.

The best model in Asics today remains the Gel Court FF even if I find it too soft (outsole and cushioning). It's the opposite of the Gel Res 7.

The best durability shoe in Asics range remains the Resolution.

Hope it can help ;-)

I’ve worn the Resolutions since the 5’s came out. I started to develop plantar fasciitis with the 7’s. That’s when I switch to the Speed 3’s. Yes they were a lot more narrow but I ordered a half size larger and it helped a little bit. The cushioning felt better on the Resolutions without a doubt, but the foot pain made me switch.

K-Swiss ultrashot is my new shoe...hands down. I will play through the life of my T-22 lites and then get a couple pairs of the updated ultrashots. I bought the old ones on clearance and they have everything I want in a tennis shoe. Toe box is roomy buty I wear thorlo level 3's so that is perfect. Great cushioning and great stability. I like them much better than the Gel Res 6's I used to have. In my opinion the K-Swiss is better in every way.

I was at TP in Orlando the other day, I complimented the fit of the Gel Res 7s. The associate said "If you like those, you love these." That's when he handed me the box a pair of Diadora Blushield 3s. I couldn't believe how comfortable they were. I told him I was almost convinced to switch from my endless supply of Nike Breathe Cage 2s.

He said he would've never tried them if someone didn't give him a pair for free. He's been using them ever since.

Well, after 5 or 6 hitting sessions over the past two weeks or so wearing the Asics Court FF's, I've committed to these shoes as my replacement for the Gel Res by buying 2 more pairs at a very discounted price.

I may even try to buy more over the next month as I'm concerned availability may become a problem. I like to stock up on shoes that fit me well and have the qualities I like in a shoe, such as the Court FF.

The Court FF length fit is very good by going down a 1/2 size from my previously normal Gel Res size. (I'm now in-between sizes in GR6 & GR7 with no size that fits properly.)

The width is also a good fit compared to the now too narrow Gel Res, though the Court FF is much more snug in the mid-foot/ankle area than the Gel Res as the result of the inner sock/booty. It took me a few sessions to start getting used to the inner sock and feeling comfortable in it.

One thing I've come to really appreciate with the Court FF over the Gel Res is the light feeling quickness I feel in them. I really began to notice this overall when playing singles and when moving forward and around the net in doubles.

One unintended consequence of this search for a Gel Res replacement after many years of exclusive Gel Res use is that I now seem to be much more interested in the various shoes than I ever was. I'm not sure this is a good thing from a wallet perspective. :) Anyway, I'm hoping this interest is temporary and will subside, now that I'm hopefully set for many months with 3 pairs of the Court FF's. Time to try to focus on tennis again.

You did a good choice buying several pairs cause it's on clearance everywhere due to Asics won't continue to produce it as they are releasing the new Court FF 2 (Novak). But the FF 2 are unaffordable for know. It's about 180$ in Europe. The official release is planned for April for official retailers in France but it's possible to order a pair on the official Asics website (but already out of stock cause of the Novak's effect :p).
The Gel Court FF is actually the best Asics shoe, a very high end model. I'm sad cause I can't use mine a lot anymore for now cause of my thick insoles. My chiropodist added me a drop cause I had ankle/Achilles trouble recently and now it's a bit tight in the backfoot and midfoot area. I had to find other shoe. Very hard cause I'm an old Asics user too and difficult to change. But I'm happy cause I recently found quite good models in other brands :D

My last discoveries are the Wilson Rush Pro 3.0 and the Yonex Sonicage. After plenty of tests I'll keep these two shoes for now and try it on court.

It's two different shoes cause one is a high-end model, the Rush Pro 3.0 and the other one is a mid range product: the Sonicage.
The Wilson's are more cushioned and they have a heel to toe drop (at least 6 millimeter if I have a good memory, it's a bit less than the last New Balance shoes which have 1 centimeter).
The two models are very comfortable, wide enough in the forefoot area compared to the Gel Res 7.
The Wilson Rush pro 3's have a medium arch whereas in the Sonicage it's quite low.
The two shoes are quite soft and flexible compared to the Gel Res 7.
Even if the Sonicage has less cushioning, this one looks quite responsive.

I also liked the last New Balance shoes too (996v3 and Fresh Foam Lav but I felt a bit tight in the front of the shoe cause the top of the shoe is quite low, probably due to my thick soles).

Now, after finding my new shoes to go I'll try it on court and hope it will be a good replacement for my former Asics shoes :)

I have worn the Gel Resolutions for years and still have a couple of brand new pairs of 7's on the shelf. On a whim a couple of years ago I bought some Speed Solution 3 shoes going up half a size when TW had them at a deep discount. I wasn't expecting to like them based on feedback from various people I play with. Bottom line is that I prefer them to the Gel Res and have been stocking up with a few extra pairs as they go on sale. I use them for tournament play since they are fast and light, but the Gel Res shoes are good for everyday play since they are a bit more stable and cushiony (in my opinion). I have had PF in the past and use an orthotic. Shoes are such a personal thing depending on your foot structure and preferences so the only way to know is to take a risk and try something.

I'd like to hear more about these Diadora Blushield 3's. The previous version (Blushield 2) has a good deal of reviews saying they were good for a wider foot. I don't have a wide foot, so I'm wondering if the 3's are suitable for me. I like the fit of the Gel Res 7, but I'm always open to trying something new.
