Former UVa national champion tennis coach Boland lands new gig at Hampden-Sydney

Former Virginia men's tennis coach Brian Boland, who led UVa to four national championships, was named Hampden-Sydney's new coach on Wednesday.

After leaving the Cavaliers, Boland worked for a year as the USTA Player Development Head of Men’s Tennis before a two-year stint as the coach at Baylor, where his run as coach of the Bears ended abruptly. He resigned in July of 2020 after Baylor officials investigated him on allegations that he sent inappropriate texts to a student who hoped to make the women’s tennis team.

He should never work again at any university for what he did at Baylor. Hampden-Sydney University must be desperate.

HSU is a weird place on its own, frankly. It’s kind of where you end up if you’re from Virginia and your parents are Country Club of Virginia mansion owning aristocracy but you haven’t yet developed a frontal lobe and got Cs in whatever prep school you crawled out of.

Not a glamorous coaching gig. Whatever if he wants to mess around there.

And yes I grew up playing against and going to prep school with many people who later ended up at HSU, 4-5 of them on the tennis team. Most were good early round fodder in local tournaments. None made any particularly significant impact at the Mid-Atlantic level for tennis, much less national.

He’ll mostly be walking into MAGA households to recruit. No one is going to bat an eye at the story of his past texts to a young lady. So, from that standpoint, a good landing spot.

I agree 100% no way should any school hire him. I guess it's a good thing that HSU is an all mens college.

The last option for the entitled sons of wealth and privilege who couldn’t get in to UVA or W&L and want to major in inheriting easy, unremarkable lives of golf and real estate.

a lot of the folks I know who went there are now involved in real estate in the Richmond area :)

My kid was accepted into both UVA and HSU. HSU offered a full ride (tuition, room/board), and he received zero money from UVA. He opted for UVA. That tells you what you need to know about HSU.
 
Let’s just leave it at - this is not a very glorious coaching gig for a former D1 national champion coach who was used to working with world class talents like Somdev - I suspect there’s not a lot of disagreement on that point.

This team is horrible. He must be desperate to coach again. This is low level division 3.
