Not really, Croatia won the whole damn thing with just 2 players.

I'd say France and Chile are vastly different in terms of the quality of players they have at the moment.

Anyways I'm pretty happy we didn't go out in the first round again for the third year in a row. Luckily we're playing Argentina at home this time so we should have a chance.

I think he was referring to Croatia 2005 campaign in which they won the cup with Ljubicic and Ancic playing both singles and doubles.

man Simon let France down big time. Tsonga would have cleaned house had he got the opportunity of the 5th rubber. Poor Simon I hope this doesn't ruin his confidence.

That's true, there was really no reason France should have lost this. Simon really screwed up in this rubber.

Puhleeeez not this again.
Davis Cup is a team sport.
Blaming one member for the loss of the team
only makes sense if only one member lost.
Three (3) members of the french team lost their matches this weekend. That's depressing for some, but look on the positive side.

MORE IMPORTANT: the czech republic played well enough to win. Give credit where credit is due. The Czechs had many more hours of experience at Davis Cup, and it payed off for them.

Actually I was talking about winning Davis Cup. Not just the rubber. They played the whole year with basically just 2 players.

2009 match record says otherwise

Monfils should have played instead of Simon. Gasquet does not warrant a spot based on form.

Gasquet has played Simon and Tsonga in 2009 in tournament play and beat both of them. So based on head-to-head matchplay, I believe Gasquet has the best record among French players against other French players this year. Plus, Gasquet has gotten off to a decent start in 2009, something like 10-5.

Gasquet has had some shoulder problems this year, so that is a factor determinig how well he plays.

I think Gasquet's biggest problem right now is fitness. I know he took the first set in his sem-final match in Brisbane against Stepanek convincingly, and then faded over the final two sets. Stepanek was simply the fitter player. Gasquet has had other matches this year where he's won the first set and looked to be the better player, only to fade. He's looking a bit chubby around the middle. Gasquet has the talent and the all-court/all-surface game to get back into the top ten. He just needs to do like Verdasco and Murray and Roddick and Stepanek and take his fitness to another level. These players are all having great starts to 2009 because they have clearly raised their fitness levels.

Gasquet's wins this year over Simon and Tsonga show he has the talent to be the top Frenchie. In fact, I don't believe he has ever lost a match to Simon, usually beats him easily. Fitness is the only thing missing for Gasquet.

Gasquet also has a winning record against Berdych.

Simon proved to be the key, in a negative way then, in this Davis cup tie.

As much as I admire Simon for his tenacity, he simply does not have the game of fellow top players. When in a match where the opponent really wants to win: i.e. Grand Slam or Davis Cup, it gets tough if you can't win on your own terms. Simon depends on the weaknesses, especially mentally, of his opponents. This pays him handsome dividends in smaller tourneys and even in Masters series, but in a best of five, playing for the honour of your country, opponents will always have a little bit more backbone.

France should have opted for Monfils IMO. That is off course very easy to say afterwards.

Monfils loss, Gasquet-Wawrinka win...

After watching Monfils pathetic loss to John Isner today in Indian Wells, one has to wonder about the guy and his ability to adopt the right tactics to win a match. There's no way a player of Monfils' class should have lost that match.

I also noticed that Gasquet and Wawrinka teamed up to beat the best doubles team in the world -- Nestor and Zimonjic -- in first-round doubles action at Indian Wells.

This after Gasquet beat Llodra 6-4. 6-0 in second-round singles play. This all tells me that Gasquet shouldn't be blamed for the French Davis Cup doubles loss. Gasquet teamed with Tsonga to take down the Bryans, and now he teams with Wawrinka to win a straight-set victory over an even better doubles team. Clearly, one can't blame Forget for replacing Clemment with Gasquet on the doubles team, which also provided a backup for Tsonga (if he injured himself on day one) or for Simon.
