Frances Tiafoe Snubbed by Miami?

Someone remarked that Tiafoe only needs 1 more withdrawal from a higher-ranked player to avoid Qualification and take part in the Main Draw.

Goffin, Djokovic, Kyrgios are all currently scheduled so it seems likely he gets in. Still a snub.

Last I checked he's next on the list so one more withdrawal and he's in the main draw. Cool if the timing gets him into the second round.
If this is true than the tournament probably took it in consideration. I mean few players are expected to withdraw and historicaly has there been a year where nobody withdrawed before the event ?

I think they set it based on a few weeks ago for organizational purposes. Delray shot him up from the 80s to the 60s and Miami is still treating him like he's 80
Cutoff date is six weeks out and with 96 direct entries minus their WCs the cut was made right around #90.

Miami traditionally gives WCs to teens with some junior and/or Challenger success the year before...Rublev WC in '15 after RG'14 Boys title; four teens last year with Challenger success (Rublev again, Ruud, Mmoh and the younger Ymer). But, I have a sneaky suspicion there's a little favoritism shown for players either training at IMG or represented by them.

Wow, this is stunning. I don't get it. The ATP LOVES hyping his story, he just won Del Ray, and he is an American -- and, as pointed out above, he's ranked very high. Yeah, I will be really disappointed in Tennis Channel if one of the announcers doesn't put Blake on the spot during the next match he is commentating. It will be more interesting than just about anything else he will say about the match.

So is the tournament director ;)

The Serbian guy is an up-and-comer, but no idea why he got one over an American with a decent tour level title to his name.
Maybe the tournament director is anti american then?
Its always something wrong! :mad::p
(How is it possible to make anything right these days?)

If you read between the lines, Wertheim basically says this in his later tweets. Tiafoe just signed up with Octogon, a competitor. Corrupt as anything.

Typically IMG players get some good treatment at this event. Kecmanovic is a future top 20, will be interesting to get a look at him against a higher ranked player. He lost in Shenzhen this week pretty badly.

Tiafoe usually go deep in the main draw if he goes through qualifying and makes it in the main tournament. I don's see it as a snub since James Blake is the Miami Tounament Director and has known Frances since he was a young child.

Harvard educated, got to #4 in the rankings, won the DC and two HCs for USA, biceps to rival Nadal and showed them off in the sleeveless era.
...has an absolutely horribly acted Dunlop Srixon commercial airing on a loop on Tennis Channel wearing some brutal Travis Matthews stuff .....

This has also been an issue with Sachia Vickery. She's a Miami local and yet wasn't given a wildcard despite a great week in Indian Wells where she came through qualifying and beat #3 Muguruza and WC Bouchard.

She tweeted out:
Never one to complain about wildcards as I’ve always had to earn my way, but disappointed in @miamiopen denying me a main draw wildcard.

Apparently the wildcards usually go to players represented by IMG. It's pretty **** poor.

If this is correct - and I hope it is - then the situation has been corrected https://twitter.com/EntryLists/status/974410888055803904

That will be it.

Management (or whatever) companies thinking they matter like this is annoying. The only thing anyone cares about is the players themselves. Every other party involved in the whole process is kidding themselves at the end of the day - all they do is skim some off the top of what fans pay to see the players.
Parasitic really.

Academies or whatever are silly too. College tennis lmao.

You're either born to win, in which case as long as you're privileged enough to be playing tennis at all in the first place, you'll just win. Academy or no academy. Or you're not, in which case you'll at best be a cookie cutter journeyman who will never win anything of note outside of a total fluke.

It's a dumb move, he's a big draw, or at least more than whoever the heck Kecmanovic is. Last I checked he's next on the list so one more withdrawal and he's in the main draw. Cool if the timing gets him into the second round.
Kecmanovic, is a former Jr World #1 (2016 I think) he’s also from IMG Academy (Bolleterri’s). He’s quite a good player, down well so far in Futures & Challengers.

Some other recent Jr #1’s Theim, Zverev, Coric, Fritz.

If Tiafoe is one away from a Direct Entry, chances are he’ll get in on a withdrawal.

Yep. It's all about who's from IMG Academy. Really crap for the decent Americans like Vickery and Tiafoe.

I thought WC's are given out at the tournament owner's discretion?

So if IMG owns the tourney why shouldn't they favor their own players?

WC's are always given out due to 'favoritism'. Why should this be different?

What am I missing here?

They have a right to do whatever they want, they can sell it on **** if they want.

And we have a right to call them out on it. Just because it's not against the rules doesn't make it good.
