21-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal is currently having a dream run in 2022. After the Australian Open win in the Summer, the Spaniard recently won the Mexican Open at Acapulco as well. At the moment, Rafa is on a winning streak and is yet to lose a match in 2022. His next target will be the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, scheduled on 8th March.

Meanwhile, Rafa’s longtime coach, Francis Roig, recently talked about Nadal and his win at the Australian Open. He also revealed an interesting information about Rafa’s participation in Miami after Indian Wells.

Francis Roig has been the coach of Rafael Nadal since 2005. In 17 years with Roig, the Spaniard achieved plenty of accolades. Roig talked about many things in a recent interview, including Rafa’s Australian Open win and playing in Miami.

“We don’t know yet. We have to play in Indian Wells first and see how he feels. Once the tournament is over, we’ll assess whether or not we go to Miami,” Roig said (Google Translate) when asked about Rafa’s chances of playing in Miami.

Roig also talked about Rafa’s chances at the Indian Wells this year, as he said, “Rafa has always quite liked Indian Wells, he bounces the ball a lot, a dry environment, since the humidity bothers him because of what he sweats. There are options but we must be cautious and do things well.”

Roig also revealed some interesting facts about Rafa’s clay-court schedule. According to him, the Spaniard could skip a few clay-court tournaments to stay in the best possible shape for Roland Garros.

He should not play in Madrid.
That tournament is useless as preparation for Roland Garros.

I mean skipping Miami is not exactly unusual for him. He prefers to do Acapulco-Indian Wells instead. Unless he gets bumped out early in California I'd hope he wouldn't be thinking of playing all three. The suggestion of him skipping stuff on clay is very, very, very interesting and very welcome too. I'll still only believe it when I see it. I don't think just leaving out Barcelona should count. :-D

Interesting to me how people on the forum bemoan the difficulty players who aren't high ranked have making a living, yet seem to want to see the top ranked players who don't need it take the loot. Personally I like Nadal very much but would love to see a lesser player who could really use the money and the exposure break though and win IW, and other tournaments.

Rafa said the same already in Acapulco.

This is what Nadal's schedule should be up to the US Open. Maybe even skip Barcelona as well, since it comes right after Monte Carlo. But there's no way he'd skip both of the Spanish clay court events. I'll believe he's gonna skip even one when I see it.

I never liked the Madrid tennis masters since it's on clay, conditions are too different from the French Open. It plays more like the mountain clay tournaments, like Kitzbuhel. winning it is never a good prediction for who will win the french open.

Honestly, I'd rather he wins another IW than Miami... but my top preference is win or lose, he enters the clay season full of energy and confidence... one more 2017 like dominant clay season would be massive.

Skip both and get fully rested

If he goes deep at IW (SF or further), he'll almost certainly skip Miami. If he gets knocked out in QF or earlier, he'll likely play Miami.

Clay is interesting. If the Madrid slot was still in Hamburg, Rafa definitely skips it more but it's not. Dude is so patriotic towards Spain that he'll never skip a big event in his country, which is why he'll play every event on clay this year that he usually does

Why is Rafa playing so many tournaments ? Didn't he play too many tournament last year and got injured ?
Rafa played 7 tournaments last year (i.e. 12 tournaments less than count towards a player's ranking) and he didn't get injured because of playing "too many" tournaments.

Okay, then he can get injured any time? Irrespective of number of tournaments he plays ?well, he played 7 tournaments and almost all were before he got injured so yeah he played lots of tournaments and some of his matches on clay were greulleing .

Getting injured doesn't depend on the number of tournaments played.

You wrote 'every single tournaments' in your previous post. There are about 70 tournaments in the ATP calendar.

Okay, my bad . I think he should play every 1000 Masters and 500 to get no1 ranking since it has nothing to do with his injury . I guess we have an agreement here
