For sure, in 2020 he'll be up 40-0 while serving for the title.

Anyone who thinks that Thiem's schedule didn't affect his game in the final doesn't know a first thing about tennis, so, in that case, everything fits.

That is a logical fallacy (wrong argument) known as argumentum ad hominem. Argumentum ad hominem: to attack the person who holds an argument, rather than refuting the argument in itself.

"Everyone who thinks X has no idea of tennis".
"Everyone who thinks Thiem was not tired has no idea of tennis".

I am just telling it like it is. Don't be sad.

I think @Sport is a poster that brings many valid points to the table, but on this particular matter I disagreed :)

Of course. The more seasoned they get the more they realise that taking just the hard line won't cut it, so rehashing some valid points is to be expected.

The moment they have to really make a judgement though ......

This is bad news. Skipping the dirt seemed to be good for him.

When he was winning every tournament in 2017 (except Dubai) in 2017 it made sense to skip. Confidence was at a supreme high.

2018 he skipped but was not as successful.

2019 he played clay and it helped him play well at Wimby.

His biggest impediment to doing well is injury. With the exception of this year, skipping the dirt court tournaments has resulted in his healthiest seasons in a decade.

I don't really care what he wins or loses, but would rather see him play more years than do a farewell dirt tour.

Federer is making it even easier for Rafa, because Federer can beat Djokovic or Thiem at Roland Garros :)
Thiem, maybe yeah..
But djok, nope..
Even if fed's up 6-0 6-0 5-0 40-0 on serve against djok, he NEEDS to stop choking because djok won't stop believing that he can still win, neither so will fed...

Feder to win against Nadsy pants if they meet at RG.

You heard it here first.

Don't act crazy dude.
The only way fed can take down rafa on clay is that somehow he atleast gets his 2003-05 ballstriking power back. With this highly diminished power, it's almost impossible to hit through rafa throughout the course of 1 clay set, let alone leave aside a BO5 clay match

Iconic first point of that match!

One of the classics...
It deserved a 5th, even though it'd mean a 6-1 set for nadal
A possible 5th set would have been delayed to Saturday back then. Also generally the rivalry didn’t already have the dynamics we later knew and hated as Federer fans. Maybe Rafa would have thought about Miami suddenly again and Federer would have cruised to an easy win in the 5th.

I guess those were the missed chances and situations which created the pattern for years to come. Only starting in 2006 Rafa always entered the court as the favourite on clay. Maybe Rome was a moment where it could have switched again, but I'm not so sure about that.

I appreciate your concern, but ... I am not in the business of "acting crazy".

Not true, fed can beat nadal on clay if its fairly fast.

Now RG is another matter, there its near impossible under any circumstances.

I don't think Federer can beat Thiem at RG. Not even in a final. Thiem is very tough to beat in best of 5 on clay now. Only Nadal has been able to stop him the last 2 years. And I'm not really sure how long can he stop him from winning the French.
I think Fed exceeded all reasonablr expectations by making the semi this year. A QF would be a good result for him next year

Poor guy. Has to try and stop Ralph by himself from eclipsing 20 since the Lost and Next-Gen have been utterly useless in slowing Ralph and Nolan. Medvedev has been closest but it's still not enough.

Or maybe this is for 2024 prep for Olympics in Paris?
Well, if RF had been more DILIGENT in his "youth" then Rafa and Novak wouldn't be so close, right?

I love watching Federer on clay, even more so than hard. His baseline game truly comes out on clay. You don't get to see it as often on hard because he bots a lot.

Legend Federer (y)(y):)

The legend of straight set losses on clay. At least Fred is no longer cowardly trying to limit the head-to-head gap between Rafa and him, but it is sad to see him so desperate to maintain his position. I suspect we will get more of the out of control Fred we saw in Shanghai hurling abuse and completely losing his composure as the end draws ever nearer.

Bad news... RF is already shanking FH's in critical situations against top 5 players.
Now you got 5 guys who are confident they can beat Fed on HC. Rafa, Novak, Thiem, Sasha, Med,
Imagine their level of confidence on clay against RF.
oh, and I forgot to throw in Tsitsipas and Wawrinka.

I am ready to see another round of Fed playing in the dust bowl. He just needs to follow that up with another MP at Wimbledon. It’s all good then.
