BTW, no one commented on this, but props to Fed for, at least, some sense of humour. First thing he said in his speech was: "Oui, c' est moi" (yes, it is me.)

I did not expect Federer to get purely dominated like that. Wow that was just total destruction. I would not be surprised if Nadal won wimbledon. In fact Nadal is closer to winning wimbledon than Federer is to winning the French.

Congrats to Nadal. Wow what shellacking.

ROTFLMAO. Thanks for this. I missed that line by a split second.

Proves that those claiming he has no class are just haters.

I love Nadal and his play on clay. I predict Nadal will win. He is simply unbeatable on clay. Federer can't stand a chance to beat Nadal. Nadal's massive insane topspin will kill any chances of what Federer has. Nadal can win 5 more consecutive French Open if he plays like that. Federer has been good but not as good as Nadal on clay. I don't think Federer can even win a set of Nadal.

To all those Federer supporters - I told you so that Nadal was going to beat Federer in 3 sets! Hahahahahahahahah Nadal rules the clay and is simply invincible on Clay. You have to have Nadal play injured in order to beat him on Clay. With Nadal's most massive topspin the world has ever seen, I predict Nadal can win 5 more consecutive French Opens.

However, I am a bit sad today as the end of French Open is also the end of the clay court season. I wish the ATP and WTA expand the clay court season. If the clay court season goes on say for 6 months or longer, you can be assured that Nadal be #1 in the world. Fast hard courts and grass favors players like Federer and Roddick. Claay just slows you down and it's better to watch. Of course, I grew up on clay myself and favors clay. I am sad teh clay court season is coming to an end :(

I was hoping for a match, but all I got was one set where Federer threw everything he had at Nadal and still lost the set.
I don't think anyone saw that bagel coming, but Fed just lost it. Shank after shank and error after error.
Nadal has the best forehand ever on clay.

I don't want to start the war again, but you can stop this nonsense. If grass and hardcore seasons are 6 months each, I doubt Nadal can even be on top 5.

A Very Solid Game From Rafa, Although Fed Grew Up In Clay And Is The Best But With Rafa In This Surface He Is Only Second Best, Rafa's Game Is Just Built For Clay, So Fed Is Still The Best In Other Surface...he Is Still No.1, Ain't He? Anyway, Fed Could Have Done Better Than Just Fold Down Like That But What Can You Do? If You Thought You've Done Your Best Yet It Still Not Enough, There's Nothing Left To Do But Fold Down......anyway, There Are Still Two More Majors Left For Fed To Win.....hope He Can Win At Least One.....

Just like the rest of the tournament, that was a completely overwhelming performance by Nadal. True, Federer did seem to be mentally out of it at times; but to be fair, there isn't anyone in the history of the sport who could've hung with Rafa today. Maybe Borg takes a set.

I have to give credit for Roger for talking to McEnroe after the match. He had a good sense of humor about it and it showed a lot of class (as opposed to walking off the court as he did last year). He's human but he learned from that mistake -- nice to see.

I'm not sure what to say ... WHAT THE HELL!!!

I've been watching tennis for long and I must admit Rafael Nadal played about as perfectly as anyone ever could in a French Open final. You just can't hold this against Roger Federer. Nobody would have stood any chance against Rafa the way he played today.

This match just puts Nole's effort in the semi-final against Rafa into proper perspective. He took one set to a tie-breaker!

That's because Nadal fell asleep in the 3rd after the initial breaks. He played "safe", he stopped being aggressive and he payed the price for his mental break.
No such break down in the final today...he was on a mission.

It's definitely the beginning of the end for Federer. It's truly annoying the fact that a guy who's only managed to win one tournament (not even a Masters Series one) since the beginning of the year holds still the number one place in the ranking list after half the year now passed.
Plain and simple, as was said before, WAY too much depends on the results on hardcourts. Federer won the US open and did well in the North American summer hardcourt season...so he still has a lock on the ranking. If the seasons were evenly split between grass, clay and hard, Nadal would easily be number one.

And while watching the 07 Wimby final, if anyone honestly thinks that Rafa's injury in the fourth set didn't affect his play in the fifth, you're crazy. He's a fighter and he played through the pain, but the level of his play definitely dipped after that.

Well, possibly yes. A straight sets beatdown on Roger Federer including a 6-0 3rd set in a grand slam final is just unreal.

Result is not that surprising, ok, 1 and 0 is bitter. But Nadal had the better clay courters in his draw and still demolished all. Like Q and M said a couple of days ago, Rafa kills anybody on clay. The guy is like a bull, strong and fast, can run all day, plays every point as if it is the last. Federer played imo better on clay in 2005 and 2006. Since then, he has lost a bit of his movement. He is calm and experienced and gets through inconsistent players like Gonzales and Monfils. But against Nadal, he is helpless. I think, he lost the RG match already at Hamburg in the first set, where all circumstances were on his side. Federer will have his big problems with Djokovic on all surfaces, too, and maybe with Gulbis.

One of the most remarkable displays of clay court tennis I have ever seen. Fed did not have a chance from the very beginning. I am still in shock at the way Fed was dominated today.

Boy, what a wonderful match. Roger should be ashamed. That was a pathetic effort on his part. He looked like he was beaten before he even struck a tennis ball. This from a No. 1? I didn't expect him to win but I certainly expected more of an effort than this. I was really looking forward to this match too. It was even getting a little attention on Sports Center and then to throw in a stinker like this!

I don't know, Roger, but I think you managed to do something almost as hard as beating Rafa on clay. And that is, making the Ladies Final the better of the two.

I dunno, if Djokovic is on Nadal's side of the draw, I think he can take Nadal out on grass for sure, even if he doesn't stand a chance on clay.

Just reading through the thread now, I meant no disrespect by what I said above, but I was truly thinking Federer might pull this one out this year. It was more out of shock.

I think it is safe to say Nadal is the best clay courter since graphite racquets came into existence. It's hard to compare to Borg since the game was so different, plus he won 6...And Borg was also an amazing athlete.

Looking forward to Wimbledon.

I thought the bettors might just to pull a fast one here, but on even terms, Nadal is the man. In fact, I am not sure that Fed is even a man they way he keeps flicking that hair.

Anyways, good to see someone here felt, as I did and do, that Nadal was on his way to crushing Federer last year in the Wimby finals, before sucumbing to an injury.

Nadal is a youngster, and improving. Fed peaked last year. He is still great to watch. But not against Nadal, on clay.

There are three top players now in the world. But I think Federer has slipped quickly to number three.

I was not surprised by the winner. I was only surprised by the score. Apparently Roger got the beatdown of his life. Totally amazed! Would have thought it be more competitive. That's just crazy good LOL

I didn't watch the match at all. I felt it was a foregone conclusion. I had more interest in sleeping.

It was a foregone conclusion because Federer didn't even turn up. Federer just wasn't interested, it was as though he didn't care.

Hmm, I posted too fast, Nadal's isn't yet, but shouldn't take long now.
LOL. I love his answer to the moronic questions.

"Q. Imagine it's 2009 and this little fairy comes to you and says, You're going to win one tournament, but you have to choose: Wimbledon or Roland Garros. Which one?

ROGER FEDERER: I don't want to answer these stupid questions anymore. They're too stupid."

" Q. Do you still think you can win Roland Garros?

ROGER FEDERER: Yes.

Q. Are you sure?

ROGER FEDERER: Well, if you want me to answer no if that makes you happy, then no. Choose the answer. I said yes. (laughter.)"

What a great tournament and impressive performance in the final by Nadal!

A dismal performance by Federer.
Not only he got trapped in the same, wrong idea of finding Nadal's backhand at all cost, his effort level was way below par. He wasn't willing to suffer and his movement was so indecisive after a couple of games.
It's one thing to lose to a superior player but giving up before the end is a little hard to stand.
If Federer wants to win French, he needs to play normal (given the way he deals with Nadal on clay, it might be called "playing smart") or to be willing and reay to suffer. He did neither today.

Q. He is always much better than you on clay. Is he getting closer to you on grass?

ROGER FEDERER: Well, we just played each other once on grass in Wimbledon. We played each other quite a few times on clay. I don't think we've had many matches on hard surfaces this year, but he is improving as a player.

I hope this was a transcription mistake. I'm quite sure they played twice in Wimbledon and those were finals, too. How could he have forgotten?

I'm going to assume he meant in the past year the improvements he's shown.

Some people are saying Nadal played his usual game. What are they watching? He played so good that both Djokovic and Federer practically gave up by the second set. Neither played bad, but they ran into a clay court monster.

federer didn't show up. his performances this tournament have not been great, at this stage of his career it's *use it or lose it*, he can't play within himself in early rounds he needs to get a groove going on his strokes. he needs to get someone in to tweak his strokes, seriously, he gave rafa 8 games worth of unforced errors.

rafa has played a near flawless tournament. absolutely sensational.

No that has to Roger against Hewitt USO 2004 (or maybe 2005?) 6-0, 7-6, 6-0
Nope, this is worse, Fed only got 4 games :shock:. I am beyond stunned, gobsmacked, at a loss for words. I hope this is Rafa's year to get to #1, best tennis he has ever played, complete demolition of Fed's game. I 'm still in absolute shock. Please everyone apologize to Verdasco and Almagro. They got insulted for their perf for nothing. Also Djoker and Bellucci can be really proud of their game now, they put up the best fight especially Djoker. I hope Rafa gets tons of momentum and confidence for the grass season now. What a display today! He's gonna beat Borg's record on clay in a flash (even Cyborg has to admit that)
Questions: when was the last time a finalist of a grand slam got 4 or less games ? Thanks in advance if anybody knows and has Fed ever been bageled in a slam final before? and when was the last time he got bageled? and how long was the shortest men's final at RG?

fed last lost a set to love in 1999

Watched the whole thing from beginning to end. It was painful to say the least. Painful all the way through. I can't quite remember the unforced errors of Fed and Nadal stats, but it was embarrassing. You have to give credit to Nadal though, he's playing the best tennis he's ever played. Federer had to hit unbelievable shots to even get Rafa off his balance. Bravo Nadal, bravo.

Actually given the score today my hypothetical Federer-Djokovic might not have been far off. Djokovic would have also brutally spanked Federer today. It is just like I said, Monfils is a joke for a semifinalist no matter whom those comments might offend, and was just a super lucky fluke semi- finalist. So the reality is the fact Federer did not absolutely crush him showed today was going to be an utter humiliation, and would have even been vs Djokovic as well, just like I said 2 days ago. Heck I still stand by my comments Davydenko or a fresh Ferrer would have beaten Federer at this French Open.

Being married to an elite athlete, my opinion is that you can take an outstanding athlete and drop them into any era, or generation, and growing up with whatever the best equipment is during that time frame, they will excel in an exceptional manner given an opportunity to practice and have good coaching.
