Thiem already choking hard. Can't believe him in first Slam final against big match player like Nadal (although I believe his level good enough to win whole thing).

It’s a shame that moonballing is that effective these days, no matter if it’s Nadal or Thiem. Would have been nice if Cecchinato had won the set, but now it’s most likely over.

Well at least Thiem will probably win in 3 now, but I'm not convinced. Nadal is still going to trample him if he's blowing SPs like that against Marco.

Nalby I understand why you'd spot a choker. Thiem is the first I've seen to rival your namesake in that regard.

2 great sets. Cecchinato is highly unlikely to come all the way back, but hope he gives a good account of himself in this third, and doesn't just fade away. He did really well to come back from the break down in the first, did really well going toe to toe and hanging in during games when down in the second knowing how important that one was going to be. Tremendous mentality displayed.

On the other hand been great seeing Thiem get his ass to net on a fair few occasions, I'd say there's been more question marks raised about his mentality in this match than his opponents, but he's been aggressive, and made the big shots when he needed them.

It's understandable because how on earth can this mug who came out of nowhere challenge the 2nd best clay courter in the world, I'd be pissed too that I'm losing precious energy for this mug

To be fair, Cecc is a true clay court specialist, he plays 98% of his matches on clay. He can rise to the big occasion.
He's no mug.

Please let this 3rd set be easier for Thiem. My stomach always gets so tied up in knots! 1 more set and Thiem reaches his first ever GS final! (:

I am a Nadal fan who wants Thiem to be in the final - the two best clay players in the world in the final of the French Open!!!! (:

I feel sorry for Mario, if DJocovic didn't wear him out, the former would have won in straight sets. Just goes to show how strong Novaks influence is

Many things need to align - Thiem needs to get this done in straights, weather conditions have to be damp (forecast is for this at the moment) and Delpo needs to make Nadal work hard for the...

Nadal' level fluctuating a lot. If Thiem gets a window of 90 minutes with Nadal playing passive, subpar Tennis - he has chance.

The guy has two days off!!! What’s with the tired crap. He should be well fit to compete with two days off.

Cecc just hit the wall this 3rd set. Thiem just needs to capitalize and take the quick win to rest.

Probably posting from the court between sets.

Nadal will come as his brutal best in that match. Dominic will have to outplay him with Nadal playing at a high level. Nadal will make him dig deeper than he ever had to.
This is a big big ask.

Marco needed more net play. He doesnt have what it takes from the baseline over 5 sets..

Maybe its his weakish serve that doesnt allow him to transition. Inspiring run. Looking forward to seeing his game in the future!
Seems like nice guy too, which is rare on the circuit. Full of rich brats in my opinion.

One more game away from the final! Hooray for Dom! (: Now I need for Rafa to pull through and not muff it in the other SF and my dream final will be on Sunday! (: My 2 favorite players!

For all his clay courting at lower tourneys Cecc isn't up to the repeated BO5 format..
He's had a good run though.
Breadstick time?

Hooray! Yes yes yes! So happy! (:

Now Nadal has to win - I am so nervous. Nadal vs. Thiem in the final will make me so very happy!

Well, we've now got the straight sets win, we should have the right weather and now we're waiting to see if Delpo can make Nadal work for it.

Thiem has every bit of aspect in his game to be a double digit slam winner. He has all the shots. Hope this is a breakthrough for him.

Fresh blood in the final, this will be second time in the last three slams that we got a first time slam finalist.

Imagine...you enter your first slam final and face the toughest challenge in tennis...Nadal in a RG final. Dreams can turn to nightmares. o_O:eek:

Good job, Thiem, he doesn't strike me as a guy who would pull a Nishikori in the final. I expect a fight from him no matter what.

Nishikori had a pretty tough run to the final - Raonic in 5 sets in 4th round, Stan in 5 sets in QF, Djokovic in 4 sets in the SF.
Not really surprised his level dipped considerably in the final.
Anyways Cilic was going to be good for him no matter what Nishi's form was if he kept his level up himself.

Edit : Thiem did play below par in the Madrid final vs Z, struggling vs his serve in particular.
Hopefully, he plays well in the final if vs Nadal, not so if it is against Delpo :P

Well done to Thiem, great to see him go one step further than in the previous two years. Progress.

Your turn, Rafa. :)

This is the first time Nadal is facing a player significantly younger than him in a slam final.

About time, as he is 32 already. Federer by 25 had already faced a player significantly younger than him in a slam final.

I see Cecchinato hit his 1-handed backhand and he can only hit it crosscourt.......... Thiem should take advantage of that. Novak didn't, he needs on court coaching.
LOL. I think you did nail this.
RR sure. I have followed the Cecc vs. Djoko thread and read it all. Posters talking on about how Djoco is out of form, is not anymore the Djoko of 3 years ago, etc etc.

The fact is that Djoko put up an amazing fight.

Why was he so pissed? Because he knows he played well, he knows he did it right. He is pissed because, him Djoko, playing as Djoko, couldn't come up to a solution to beat Marco! His brain is hot and angry because he cannot understand how he has lost a match even if displaying an excelent quality of tennis. He did what he should have done and the anger comes exactly from here. If he had been playing bad, he wouldn't be so pissed.

So your qestion(Hit through Ceccs defences where Djokovic couldn't?) bring up another one. What could Djoko have done more than what he did to win?

My answer is nothing. He played well. Cecc played better. And Djoko played well the important points (he missed a FH at 9-8 true, his only real mistake), but Cecc played better.
That is why Djoko is absolutely angry. He played a great match, and even so, he lost.
And now we know the rest of the story

3-4 grand slams max. He isn't close to Becker/Edberg/Wilander level.

It was bound to happen at some point, everyone was saying either Thiem or Zverev in the final, so we finally got it.

Thiem is in the final!!!!!!!

@Meles
Its been a long road w lots of ups and down. The day has finally come!!

It's good to see him in the final for sure! I think the day will have come when be actually wins one.

You must be happy with the prospect of having two favourites in the final - you can enjoy the result no matter what!
