Cecchinato defeated 2 top players named david goffin and novak djokovic back to back....
Thiem just crushed alex zverev.

I go with thiem in 4 sets

They've both had two very good wins back to back, and Cecchinato looks smart and varied enough that he could mess with Thiem and his one note big time, but I feel like Marco's wins are amplified by the fact that Goffin was having to play back to back days, and Djokovic is maybe not as all the way back as many had started to think.

I think Thiem will probably have too much for him, especially given the nature of their matches today, but I'll be pulling for another miracle performance.

I voted Thiem in 4, it's just that Thiem doesn't give me enough confidence to win easily, winning most of his matches in 4 and then beating an injured Zverev...
Then again, I also voted Thiem in 4 because Dominic has the experience of playing 2 Roland Garros SF before and the big Chatrier court and aura will impose against Marco and will give the Austrian the win.

Cecchinato must have had pretty good game all along. That's interesting but Thiem is very different player now. Hopefully Thiem serves well and it'll be a straight setter, imo.

I'm going to go against the flow. I've never been impressed by Thiem's mentality in BIG matches.
And if Marco can handle Djokovic, Thiem should be easier.

The Italian in 4. 4-6,7-6, 6-4, 6-3 for Cecchinato.

This Djokovic is around 75-80%. Thiem's level is much higher. The only thing that could happen is that Thiem could have an erratic day and crap the bed but I think Thiem will probably polish this guy off fairly easily.

Djokovic only problem was that he didn't have the power to hit through the CC slice. I wonder who would have that power....

biggest break of Thiem's career..first an injured Zverev, and then Novak bowing out..fully expect him to be in the final...if the King is there is it time to hand over the crown?

of course he could be playing Delpo instead :)

I find it more likely that Thiem wins in less than 3 sets than loses in 3, 4, or 5.

No offense to the Italian, but he is probably the weakest SF'ist we have had since... can't even remember. And Goffin/Novak being considered top contenders says a lot about the current state of the tour.

I don't think Novak would have been his problem. This Thiem should beat current Djokovic.

I would really like to see Thiem in the final. Of course, if Cecchinato gets there, it'll still be an interesting final since he'll be a Cinderella story.

should, but his experience would equal whatever Marco has left, which I suspect is not another golden performance..great run for him though, love how he moves and strikes the ball, that little hoppity hop thing he does :)

Djokovic has zero top 10 wins this year, the highest ranked player he's beaten is RBA.

Thiem is a step up and should comfortably beat Cecc, though Thiem sure does have the tendency to make it hard for himself. The pressure being on Thiem could be a factor, He'll never get an easier opponent in a RG semi final.

if in doubt, ask @Checkmate

I thought you were a big Djokovic fan?

And even RBA was upset by the recent loss of his mother, which no doubt impacted on his standard of play.

Either way, it would be a SHBH firework show.
Not sure how a player in his mid 20s can have such a sudden breakout like this Sicilian guy. We are talking about from winning no GS match to winning 5 in a row to reach SF.

Come on, now! Have some patience. He'll get better. Marion Bartoli(the heavy and retired version) has to beat him yet! :p

lol... I pretty much gave it until this clay season before writing him off. But who knows. Murray's comeback after back surgery was probably more surprising than a Novak comeback would be. Well, maybe not.

Checc to keep Thiem in his place - a perenial semi-finalist at the only slam he will be competitive at. Although, if Thiem does make it through, it will be thoroughly enjoyable to watch Rafa crush him in straight sets.

My feeling about this match?

Cecchinato will destroy Thiem. Well let's be more realistic. Cecchinato will win in 4.

I mean, have you all seen how the Italian plays important points? It's surreal. Ace to close first set, and the way he played the set points for Djoko in 2nd set? Amazing, using drop shots and swing volley, and other winners:eek:. And the way he played the 4th set TB, especially from 6 all, that is something unseen!

His BH is absolutely perfect, and he just does everything with it. DTL, Crosscourt with amazing angles, and can spinnit ballon like, and can drop-volley...ohhh what a drop volley..! His serve is very secure and efficient, and very good FH.

So what will Domi exactly do tomorrow, apart from crushing the ball from behind? Let's face it. Game wise, Marco has a huge edge.

But what really could make the difference is how Marco becomes big in important points!

No joke, I think some Djokovic fans need to be patient. The biggest problem for Djokovic is that these younger guys(Thiem, Zverev, Kyrgios) may be able to thwart his comeback. They have styles of play that may not match up well with his game.

I was wondering who Cecchinato was and came across a video of him thrashing the Fog in Munich in set 2 and 3. Cecchi has some serious game y’all, great backhand, great forehand which he can hit with tremendous amount of topspin and can also flatten it at will. Plus an extremely good serve on clay, uncanny anticipation, great feel for the ball and a natural mover on clay. This guy is legit. If the magnitude of what he has accomplished this week so far doesn’t affect him mentally, he will beat Thiem and probably whoever his opponent is on Sunday.

Thiem will likely win in 3 sets in the SF - I liked what I heard him say in an interview the other day, Dom knows that he needs to step up his game and I am certain he will. I expect him to be in the final and hoping it will be vs. Nadal.
