Since I bumped @Federev 's old thread about the USO, I thought I better make this one for the people who got confused and posted there. Sorry for taking your idea @Federev , consider this your thread.

From Federev:
I think the usual suspects who should be off the list for semis are obviously Djokdal, Thiem.

I wouldn’t consider Tsitsi, Grigor, Stan, Goffin, ....or even the Shwartz or Shapo much of a dark horse given their Rom form.

Beyond that I don’t think I have as good a handle on clay to know who to exclude.

Let @Federev decide who is not allowed to be chosen as dark horse, then you may place your votes.
You’re too kind!

Dark Horse for at least the Semifinals... if Humbert isn't too tired. Rublev could break through. Zverez on clay? I don't know much about him on clay. But I think Shapapolov is generally a good mover.. Also Casper Ruud. Guy loves the clay. I might go on the limb for Coric since he was so level headed during the open and plays better in cooler weather.
So Humbert, Rublev, Zverev Shapo, Ruud and Coric in that order.

I still see Djoko Thiem and Nadal in the semis. I'm not sure if Medvedev joins them

Zverev has 2 clay master 1000 titles

Krajinovic, Garin, Ruud looks to be in good form. Hope at least one of them can reach a QF.

Krajinovic has a very nice game, I think. Ruud would be awesome for me as a Norwegian :)
If Ruud wins (I like him, and his game) - or even makes it to the semis - would it be The Ruud Awakening?

Medvedev, the Muster of clay courts.

He has won only 10 matches on clay in his life.

While i think whoever draws him is going to benefit in the SF, Thiem also may not make it to semis this time or may end up getting beaten in straights by Djokodal.

I wish television would stop showing the big 2 matches because it is going to be really boring 2 hours every match. Instead they can show outside courts, which may lack class but will have drama.

The Muster of clay courts, as in a reference to how bad Muster was on grass :p

I think he simply hits too flat and that's not the recipe for success on clay. He is not a point builder on it like the guys who can play on it.

And people complain about Roddick. Wonder the double standards here.

Tim and Zod show again. Tim winning an absolute joke of a USO, Zod winning the equivalent RG. That's the lostgen-nexgen trolling we deserve right there.

Got you - I hadn't really thought about his flat trajectory being a hindrance on clay - good point. I do think he'll soon find a way to contend better on clay, but probably not at RG20.

Well, last year he played as well as he could on clay, but still finished winless at RG.

In 3 years time when Big 3 retire, he may end up winning RG and people will call him a clay monster.

This is the fallacy of measuring achievements by titles won without evaluating context.

Zverev could have won this USO and if we dont look at how he did what he did, then he becomes a hard court legend.

Is he a dark horse after Rome though?

I mean for sure he is not a shoe-in by any means but the recent trajectory is nice.
I think so. He just cracked the top 10 and never really showed anything on clay before Rome. He's really just now starting to figure out how to control his game a little. Still a long ways to go on that too btw. He still plays too aggressively at times. No Thiem, Zverev, Twits, Med, Wawrinka, or Nadal that he had to contend with. I'd say right now he would be a dark horse for a SF there. Although this time next year may be a different story.
