Serena will either win or crash out early. The thing is if she reaches the quarters the event is over. I think she wants this badly, and in theory nobody can stop her, but I hope she doesnt put too much pressure on herself as I think that has been her problem in many recent years.

Yes, it could go either way for her at the FO--i.e. crash out early or if she makes the later rounds, the title is hers most likely. I thought she would win the FO last year and boy was I wrong.

Based on recent history at the event....Maria.
Based on recent clay form.... Serena.

If Serena can break the "not past the quarters in a decade" slump she could win the thing. But of the last 4 times she has played she's been out twice before the 2nd week. Maybe her recent red clay wins will spur her...or maybe she will bomb out again. Neither would surprise me in the least.

I ended up voting for Maria mainly because of all the top 4 seeds she is the only one to have made multiple SFs here in recent years...in fact the only one to get that far at all. Unless she is legitimately sick (which I doubt) I don't see Maria bombing out so it will be up to Serena to get to her. I just don't feel confident she will.

Wonder whose half of the main draw Azarenka will be in.

Will Maria get another patty cake draw?

yes. THAT is the question, non? ;)

sorry, I misunderstood your post before.

K so ... doesn't the third seed have to be in the top half along with the first seed?

Hard to predict, it all depends on the draw.

Serena hasn't made the F of Roland Garros in ages so I'm not so sure what reaction, emotions she'll develop if ever ever she reaches there... this could turn out to be like a Safina Kuznetsova encounter in 2010.

Sharapova hasn't defended a single major in her career and the sole fact she bailed out against Errani in Rome where she was the double-defending champion is a bad indication about her chances in this slam.

Personally, I'll go with Stosur. Has already defeated Serena in Roland Garros and in majors overall, has already made the F in RG, her game is tailor made for the surface with all her spins and she seems to have found her level of play (forehand) again in Rome.

Upsets will be, Kvitova (2nd round), Li Na (2nd round), Radwanska (3rd or 4th round) and Wozniacki (1st round)... and hopefully my bb Victoria reaches the SF, that'd be a reasonable achievement for her. Errani as for her, I predict a 4th round or QF showing at max.

Serena is the favorite. But she has been the favorite before in many tournaments. She has great form going in RG last year and crapped out. She lost to Stosur in the finals of the US open two years ago.. She has lost many times in grand slams and honestly she has has been the favorite for everyone in 5 to 7 years. She can be beaten. One injury can totally derail her ala the aussie open.

I'd like to see LiNa get to the finals.

Serena is favourite here and as for her MAIN RIVALS:

155gjo1.png

2 Premier Clay Finals and they got 9 games between them, and Identical 13-2 records.

Barring a 'Serena Moment' the title looks to be hers, Vika and Maria will have their wigs snatched yet again!

I believe the 3rd and 4th seed can be in the top or bottom half of the draw

If the 3rd is in the top, then the 4th is in the bottom and vice versa.

How can anybody decide for sure who is going to win the FO until they see the draw? Sure Serena is the favorite but you still need to look at the draw imo before you can make an informed decision.

The women on clay are not as clear cut as the men where you pretty much know 99.9% that Nadal or Djokovic will take the title this year.

Have You Ever Heard Radio Roland Garros?

It's not broadcasting yet, but when it does, it's really worth listening to, IMO. Yes, I'd maybe rather have Tennis Channel, but since I don't it's a lot of fun listening to these experienced sports/tennis broadcasters and their banter and interviews .....

I'm rooting for Serena this time even if I don't see her win. If she does, she would once again highlight how poor is the WTA field since the early 2000's contenders have retired. Might hurt. At least, it will boost her ego, wallet, and trophy chest. Although if she wins, I want a proper dismantle of Sharapova in the finals. Period. At least Azarenka can make it "look" competitive.

Have the French crowds gotten over mocking her hoot-owl audibles? don't remember her last year, but the year before they would echo-hoot after her stroke-for-stroke hoots!

I can still remember once during a Vika/Shrieka match where the umpire admonished the crowd to "remain silent during the point" ... RFLMAO!

Childish crowd. They come off like several TT members--born free of basic decency and self-control.

I can understand that viewpoint, but it does seem that ttv.com has managed to somehow downplay the noise coming from on court microphones during madrid and rome ..... last year I had family members coming in from other rooms, asking what that unpleasant noise was coming from the television

different strokes for different folks, but figure how many strokes Vika and Shrieka, in particular, take per minute, then multiply that for an entire hour to 1-1/2 hours match ... some spectators apparently feel that audible assault is also "free of basic decency and self-control"

Plus, remember those numerous rules violation hindrance calls that played a part in the williams/rozzano first round match last year?

Someone's voted for Wozni - this thread should be shut down.

Or tennisbuck should just be banned :)

I know ... right? poor Woz, she just can't get shut of her pater Piotr ... he visited her twice today on court in Brusels and she still lost in straights to jie zheng! true, it was cold and damp, and maybe she's hoping it's warmer in paris? but sill you'd think she'd have enough pride to at least make it to the quarters!

======

meanwhile, the qualifying draw is out, so i'll post it here in a few .... (the qualy seeds are in post #9)

Even if Serena somehow manages to F it up again I am not sure why so many assume Sharapova would just win even then. She would also lose most likely if she plays Azarenka who owns her, and showed she was in good form in row. Na could also beat her if she doesnt have a brain cramp, and then there are the random wierd losses Maria usually has in majors.

Anyway I really think Serena will do it this year, but if she doesnt the winner wont be Maria.

Sharapova is in desperation mode, as it means something for her to actually defend a major for the 1st time. That said, it is now beyond doubt that her recent coward act of bailing out of her last event was anything other than having enough prep time over the most likely threats. Does this mean she will repeat? Not as a guarantee, but I expect her to be "on fire" more than any other time in her career.

She would burst into 1000 joy-filled pieces if she defeated Serena in the FO final--probably be a bigger moment than her 1st major....but the chances of that happening are painfully thin...
