It just struck me how much Wozniacki is a complete afterthought now. It used to be news when she was upset, and we used to talk about her alot, whether positively or negatively. But, now she's not discussed much at all.

Amazing that not that long ago she actually was a huge part of the discussion. Maybe she won't win slams, but she could still be doing a lot better. I wonder if we're going to see Vlaidisova (sp?) part II and she'll retire very early. Or, maybe she'll have a renaissance of sorts and at least do better than she's doing now.

Well its the French...even when Woz was #1 she was never really a factor at this tournament so why be now. I honestly don't mean to sound like a jerk but her losing early here is not really news...many expected her to lose to Robson. I think it would have been more shocking if she had lived up to her seeding as it would have meant beating Kuzzy on clay. But she didn't. She's a hard court specialist. Unless this new coach she is supposed to be getting works a miracle that will likely be all she will ever be....and unless said miracle happens the #10 ranking may be where the high point could be from here on out.

I don't hate her and I don't think at 22 she is totally dead...but not only does she need a strategy overhaul she needs the confidence that she had playing against the field in 2010, where post Wimbledon she win everything clijsters didn't. That confidence is gone and without it whatever new tricks the coach to be tries she will be a permanent afterthought.

I have no sympathies for the weak era girl, I'm glad to see her go bye-bye. :p

Just a stat I read over on GM. Top 5 players in the last 8 since - Wimbledon 2003.

Roland Garros 2013 Quarterfinalists:

[1]Serena Williams vs Svetlana Kuznetsova
[4]Agnieszka Radwanska vs [5]Sara Errani
[12]Maria Kirilenko vs [3]Victoria Azarenka
[18]Jelena Jankovic vs [2]Maria Sharapova

Only Kuzzy is unseeded although she is potentially one player of the lot who can actually take out Serena.

I consider the top of the game strong when the top players consistently arrive in the final stages of big tournaments especially majors according to their seedings. We have three real heavy weights leading the game. Because the top is strong, the lower echelons also shows signs of becoming stronger. The Wozniacki Sunshine years were the darkest days for the WTA for perhaps 25 years. imo the average standard has undeniably risen since 2010. And it has very much to do with Serena's coming back and lifting up the competition.

Serena is the only real heavy weight. :)

Azarenka and Sharapova are solid strong era top tenners but ideally there'd be better players like Venus/Henin/Clijsters/etc between them and Serena. This would also help them from getting their butts kicked in finals/semis by Serena all the time, as they would lose to that group before meeting her vast majority of the time. :p

The strength of the game is definitely better than what it was from 2008-2011, still certainly not strong though.

Unbelievable that in the QF of a GS event, most places aren't giving odds on one of the players winning (i.e. Serena is such a cert that bookies won't lose money on it...)

Depth of WTA, right there.

Errani takes the first set 6-4

Gotta love the variety these two are coming up with .... lobbing and drop shotting all over the court ...... yes ... the ENTIRE court! :D

=======================

sara blows her game point after some beautifully executed gambits, relinquishes to the break back, aga serving 1 all, holds 2-1

:)

Seriously. Give me these two, Kerber and Vinci over the big hitters. Their matches are a joy to watch. So much fight and effort. And variety (well, Kerber's game's a little dirtier, but still....)

LOL ... very true right now the little 5'4" errani only beat radwanska once before? she's very focused, attacking, moving up the court, doing her best to put the ball where Aga isnt ... breaks 4-3

BUT Aga w/her own magic, breaks back, 4 all

In a new development, the women's champ and men's champ must play each other to see who the supreme champion will be.

So Nadal vs Kirilenko, no?

Monfils vs kirilenko ,

but if you want to talk about juicers then.

Nadal vs Serena

If you want to talk about retired

Safin vs Dememtiava

I know clay is probably Radwa's least favorite surface, and is Errani's favorite, but still, Radwa needs to find a way to win a match like this if she's evern going to more than "enjoyable-to-watch-variety" who flames out in the QFs or earlier.

So, with today's victory over Kuznetsova, Serena Williams is the 1st American woman to reach the French Open semis since Capriati in 2004.

Long stretch of time.

I didn't realize that. Nice for American tennis and appropriate that it would be Serena, she is such a Francophile!

Watson: Oh dear, a bagel for the the Shreikapova :)

Holmes: Ah, but I wouldn't worry fans of Maria. Watch her change her strategy. The ball bashing isn't working, so she'll go to plan B.......
