Fritz signs with BOSS

I see this as the exact Boss vibe. In the wild, I've never seen anyone wearing Boss that made me think "that guy looks calm, reserved, educated and classy," it's literally just AMG up-badging dudes wearing 3 pounds of cologne with a shirt that says BOSS as large as possible.
Facts

But like it or not but thats typical Tennis vibes.

Well maybe before AMGs boom there were some more ordynary Mercs :D

I'm not really feeling the stripe down the middle of the back:

The trash Nike produced for him was embarrassing. He was always stuck with the little quarter zip top in the worst of the available colors.

Nike needs to do what Adidas did with Stella McCartney on the men’s side. Bring in Boss or Calvin Klein or someone else and make something that doesn’t make everyone want to turn away in disgust.

They choose their own colors no?

I liked lots of the stuff he wore over the last two years which was an amazing run for Nike Court, and bought a lot of it. I actually think he chose some of the best colors/combos

nah, Delic played for the USTA until 2010, same generation as Levine, Isner, Sock

You got any evidentiary support that all USTA guys were allotted individual nike deals?

Seems a little counterintuitive to the entire sponsorship negotiation dynamic. As soon as guys hit the tour, agents/managers usually negotiate those deals, not federations

For instance, several guys in that era didnt have Nike deals but came out of the USTA development program:
  • Roddick: turned pro 2000, Reebok
  • Robert Kendrick: turned pro 2000, Lacoste
  • Scoville Jenkins: turned pro 2004, Reebok
  • Querrey: turned pro 2006, adidas

Delic turned pro in 2003, so by your logic, the USTA and player development inked a 7 year deal for him until he swtiched to ADNA in 2010????

Also, would not consider Sock in his generation, Sock turned pro in 2011 8 years later and was with adidas at the time. Sock was with adidas from 2011-2015, didnt switch to Nike until 5 years into his career

Maybe Nike just had a strategic push in tennis at the time because they had the following guys out of the gates: Isner, Blake, Fish, Ryan Harrison, Bobby Reynolds, Ginepri, Levine, Brad Klahn, Rajeev Rahm, and others…

I have the feeling Nike is pulling out, just like they are doing with golf. Have a handful of big names and that’s it. I don’t think tennis and golf are sadly a priority/moneymaker for them
I've heard that they don't pay anyone but the biggest names much money. But that's just "i heard." I don't know the degree or to what amount Nike has "moderate" endorsements where players get shoes and clothes and are also paid some money.

On Andy Roddick's podcast, Max Eisenberg (Sharapova's agent) said Nike does very incentive-heavy contracts. If you're winning a lot of trophies, no one pays more. But if you're outside the very top, I guess there are better places to go.

Jack Sock 2010 Us Open before turning pro and Adidas

Again around that time most USTA juniors (Goldstein, Gimelstob, Blake, Fish,...etc ) has Nike as clothing and shoes supplier as later around 2015 has Adidas when they started to sponsor the USTA

by the way look the hat.

I just think Nike had a bigger tennis budget back in the day, simple as that. I do generally agree most of the guys coming out of the usta player dev were Nike, that’s a fact

Dude !! !! the greatest hat ever !!!!!!!!!!!!

Nike is going the route of Prince and Völkl Tennis. Shedding players left and right. Will Nike turn themselves into a niche tennis brand too?

I think the reasons are quite different here . Nike have 3 youngest top 10 players plus bunch of the others They are and willl be fine

I'm not sure but it looks like downfall of Prince was mostly because they belived top much in O-port rackets.
Volkl from other hand was always kinda niche brand.

Of course its sad that they both arent represented on tour level anymore - Poullie is playing Prince without stencil and im sure noone is hitting Volkl

...
That just sealed its demise
Quite a while before that a lot of pro players used Prince racquets but Prince didn't want to pay them what the competition offered.
Pros switched to other brands, Prince as a brand started to be less noticeable.

They just need Real designers from Brands like Christian Dior, make it more fancy.
But believe it or not,the Nike Store next to me 5min is overcrowdet when new shoes or clothes are released.

I feel annoyed by this Raducanu Sabalenka match right now, the lovely Raducanu in the same pink dress from Nike, it suits Sabalenka, but it's way too big for Raducanu.

Other brand im curious about is Reebok

Does anybody know if they continued doing tennis apparel after beeing acquired by Adidas and not resigning Roddick?

Some od their Rafter fits was my favourites

My days of rocking it head to toe are gone to. :(

Although, I'll gladly retract that statement if they will retro the 1991 Agassi US Open collection.
There are apparently Agassi shoes coming! Not sure whether 1991 US Open gear is specifically on its way though. 1991 gear was awesome. Everything about it really. The colour, graphic treatment, cut of the gear, performance.

Yep. The Nike Air Tech Challenge IIs are coming this fall.

The rumor is that Nike was supposed to release another Agassi retro for the fall of 2021.

Based on what I've read, it was going to be the Agassi 1991 US Open collection.

But it got cut at the last minute due to reasons I'm not privy to. Maybe budget related issues. Nike showed a loss of almost 800 million dollars in the fourth quarter of 2020.

given all the history, would be a real sad end to their legacy in tennis

Guys...

Keep in mind Alcaraz is getting $1mm/year until 2026. Obviously they're gonna have to back the truck up for him after the massive deal they gave a less successful player...they are getting ready to give Alcaraz $175-200mm over ten years if I had to guess

Nike are just phoning it in for a bit while they retool their lines.

Their tennis line has been built around Rafa, and the "Advantage" stuff which basically slots in where the RF stuff used to be.

They're about to throw massive money at Carlos, and Sinner's deal is huge. Guys like Rublev, Fritz etc are expendable.

If I were Shapo and Tiafoe I would be a little worried.

The resale market for tennis apparel is going to be as dead as you can possibly imagine, once Nadal retires.

Alcaraz and Sinner are not going to be able to carry the torch like Federer and Nadal did for years and years.

Idk bro, alcaraz won the 22 USO and it was clear then he was gonna be great. Yes, the deal terms are iffy, but he’s gotta be a swoosh guy forever (we’d hope). Point being, they’ve had 1.5 years to give the guy a monogram logo and haven’t made it happen. They’re paintjobbing shoes and cutting tons of pros, I wouldn’t say the arrow is pointing up. Unless you have some look at their three year strategic plan that provides rationale for that positivity, I’m wholly pessimistic (as one of the most fervent and relentless defenders of Nike on TT in the past 15 years).

I guess what's kind of ironic about all this is if you look at the entertainment industry, they're all about rehashing shot nowadays because it's seen as the "safe" play. Movies, TV shows, video games, etc. Countless remakes, remasters, spinoffs, etc.

Yeah, sports apparel is a completely different industry, but with how well the last Challenge Court line seemed to sell, have to imagine Nike would have printed money with another run. I know I would have bought more.

They are giving Rafa and Sinner a ton of money right now. Remember Carlos is on a $1mm/yr deal right now.

I think they've been holding the other guys back a little because it would have hurt Rafa's sales. Now? The plan is coming together. They have Alcaraz and Sinner locked up and those guys are gonna be far and away the best players for a while. They have Rune and Musetti as well.

Alcaraz' stuff, even unbranded, is already 2-3x as much as the regular versions. He's already pushing values up

I sure hope they keep both

I always thought Nike should have done an anniversary edition of the Mac/Agassi cross-trainers - gray and white, black swoosh, and I think green somewhere. Maybe they did and I missed it.

Nike hasn’t had a good clothing line since 2020. Shoes don’t fit right and the quality on my Vapor 11 Attack is pathetic.

I'm still buying GP Turbo and Cage 4 and I'm very happy.

The shirts and shorts I picked up in 2022 and 2023 have been better than anything else I've bought from them. Especially the ADV tops

Blasphemy.

And I really can’t believe Michael Russel is sitting in the stands wearing Boss gear.
Is Russell still wearing that hat from the TW competitor in Texas ? I always wondered if he got paid for that or if he just did it as a favor.

He looks much better in these cloths IMO. The Nike stuff always looked boxy, baggy, and not properly sized. Maybe he like it like that.
