From Federer Fans, Well Played Djokovic (deserved it!)

Disappointing loss for Federer fans but have to hand it to Djokovic for his quality of play today. His returning was epic and his baseline shots were excellent. Federer asked him the right questions but the answers from Djokovic were brilliant.

I hope Djokovic fans in the main can acknowledge that Federer enhanced his reputation more than anything today. He gave a great fight, his winners to unforced errors ratio was excellent, and he played aggressive. I was proud to support him. If you go down, go down to someone playing great and give them a hell of a fight. Federer did that. Player on the other side was a bit better. No regrets!

Congratulations Djokovic.

I agree. Tennis won today. Nole had this win coming for a long time.

And Nole confirmed that W is the most important tournament in his speech.

There is no way that anybody can argue that Fed is clearly one of the best ever! I'm a Djokovic fan, but I have a huge appreciation for Fed and how amazing he's still playing. Great stuff.

other than the normal MTOs that players have to use to beat Fed(pathetic in its own right) Djoker clearly is just plain better than Fed on all fronts except serves and volleys...congrats

Thanks both of them for a great entertaining and emotional match...what an epic match! Old master vs young warrior. Unfortunately as Nadal admitted that youth helps after he lost to Kyrgyzstan. ...being young and able to run for several hours with fresher legs helps Djokovic gain the edge in the decider.

Agree completely. Disappointing but Nole deserved it. He played better the whole match and I'm amazed that Fed managed to push it as hard as he did.

As a Fed fan i really wanted Federer to win as this was a great opportunity to win his eighteenth slam, but i was in on way disappointed Novak won. Congrats Novak, well deserved.

yep hats off to Novak, incredible effort from both, Roger for fighting back from the brink and pushing it all the way and Novak for staying mentally so strong after losing match points in the fourth to pull it through. Tennis was a big winner today, pulsating match with so much drama, twists and turns, best match ive seen in years.

So happy for Novak, after those gut wrenching losses, Time does equalize things.

At the same time, it is painful that Fed took it to fifth and lost. While i am so proud that he took it to the 5th, in the short term i would have been happy if he had lost in the 4th.

Fed lost this match by a point or two.

I am glad the person on the other side of the court was Novak. Anyone else, would have been very very disappointing.

That overhead smash in the penultimate game - how the heck did he miss it?

Fed was amazing today. Absolutely amazing. To put this resistance at 33yrs vs world no.1 is something that will be remembered when it's all over with this golden generation.
This performance very much helps Feds legacy coz people thought (including myself as Novaks fan) that he somehow lacked fighting spirit in his big career. Today he got a lot of my respect in that department too. I was blown away with his display today.

The heart that both showed today was completely staggering.

And the returns that Djok made in Fed's last two service games were mind-blowing.

best part of this result, is it sets up a barn-storming finale in the US Open... assuming it will be Nadal vs Djokovic of course. The clash to decide who reigns supreme for 2014.

I'm a fan of them both. . . and the more mature Djokovich gets, the more I like him; the kid stuff was tiresome. Federer, let's hope, gets another shot at W.

Spot on OP. As I said in a thread recently, it was always going to be a great weekend of tennis with the semis too.

Well done to Novak and his fans. Novak deserved it today - he played the important points better and was great for the majority of the match.

This match was a true pleasure to watch. Both of them just poured their hearts out there, and yes, tennis today did shine very brightly. Look at those winners to unforced errors ratio for both...the crowd couldn't believe some of those rallies...the intense first set, the fourth set epic, and then the tension in the fifth...a true pleasure to watch. A great day to be a tennis fan, irrespective of who won the last point...two champions showed us what they are made of.

Just finished watching on replay; this was an incredibly well-played match that both players deserved to win. A fan of them both, I was really rooting for Fed, but I have to hand it to Djoker. Both were great, but Nole was just a little bit better. Well done, Nole.

I would have loved to see Fed win, but they both deserved it. Excellent tennis, one of the best Wimbledon finals in some time, actually.

Yes, of course; Congrats To Novak!
The match was extremely close. Could have gone either way really.......

I know I wanted the great man Roger to win as for leaving an aesthetic principle foot-print in tennis history, however you have to tip your hat to the Djoker here at the end of the day. He really did well in recovering there to over-come his recent demons from the past. Any regular character on the tour (Some even champions) after losing a set 5-7 when leading it 5-2 at one point, would have disintegrated, but Nole, similar to Murray at the 2012 US Open, showed immense depth of character and held his spirit strong to overcome terrible adversity.

That win will probably prove the most significant win he'll EVER have of his career. Never mind winning a first grandslam title as a teenager, lifting the Davis Cup for Serbia, or even saving those two match-points twice against Federer at the Aussie and US Opens before coming back to win. This will be REALLY pinnacle, the spring board, the cushion and the momentum he simply needs to have him dominating the men's game for the rest of his career. This win is just, well, you just could not put a price on it, it's not pricable!

So I commend you Nole, as both a tennis player and a man. You overcame that traumatic period in your career, every champion has to. We can all see just how much you've aged in your face from the last two months and it's all been worth it. This inherent glitch-defect which had been growing and growing like an almost cancer-tuma in the right side of your brain? It's like it's now been successfully removed!!! You've been through your radio therapy, now you are free!!!! :yeah:

That said I'm estimating there is a probability chance of around about 5 - 10% that this cancer can return and the I'm sensing/guessing your next check-up for any signs will be in 2 months time, at the US OPEN? September? JUST ENSURE ME ONE THING! ENSURE ME! Ensure me that that ruddy moon-balling virus of a tennis player does NOT steal in, AGAIN, please?. Last year was excruciatingly painful. Show the bloke who's temple we are in when it's hard-court, *****!

djokovic cheated by taking mto and not to mention his pushing is absolute disgrace while federer was going for the lines !

Why do people say such ridiculous things. Novak had 60+ winners today. Actually Novak played more aggressive than Federer and had way more both FH and BH winners in the match. Fed had more total winners only because of 25+ aces which count as winners in the final stat.

Forgot to say. Thanks! Very nice post. Contrary to one above.
And yes, agree with what you said about Federer.

The match was epic and Novak more than earned the win. I was rooting for Roger but he played as well as he could today and it wasn't enough.

Fed fan here but novak deserved it. He played solid and aggressive with depth on shots. He didn't lose his mind after letting the 4th slip away. It was a tight final. Each set decided by a tie break or only just 1 break of serve. It had the drama, the momentum swings and high stakes for both players. Sad fed couldnt take it home but well played from an ageing federer, as you dont see a performance like that form him much nowadays. serving 29 aces against novak was just out of this world!

Brilliant performance by Joker, hats off. He kept an amazingly high level throughout and hit an amazing number of lines. His consistent depth was a killer in the end. Like Fed I couldn't believe he managed to take it to five. He could have pinched it but it would have gone down as a mugging if he had so all in all a fair result and a great few hours entertainment.

"Genius is not replicable. Inspiration, though, is contagious, and multiform — and even just to see, close up, power and aggression made vulnerable to beauty is to feel inspired and (in a fleeting, mortal way) reconciled." David Foster Wallace

What a match! Djokovic was raw, making so many shots on the lines and getting to every ball AND playing them aggressively. I have never seen Djokovic play with such heart, he really wanted to win! Hats off, indeed.

Djokovic was nearly 21 when he won the 2008 AO.

It's funny watching the Federer haters trying to rile people up, when the reaction from a lot of Fed fans is just "Meh, he played brilliantly, we're proud."

It's like seeing The Joker's face at the end of The Dark Knight when his bomb doesn't go off, and he's all "WTF? Why isn't this working?"

As much as I wanted Fed to win yesterday, once Djokovic served for the match in the 4th, and once he had that match point at 5-4, I knew then that a Federer victory wouldn't have been satisfying. Like the Roddick match in '09, it would have been oh so sweet at the time, but there'd have been a bitter after taste.

Oh well, hopefully he can do well in the US, and then in the indoor season :)
