Quick reminder of the context in 2020
- Djokovic was undefeated in 2020 before the hiatus. Won ATP Cup (trashed Nadal in the final), AO and Dubaï. 0 loss.
- Djokovic was defending 2630 points between before IW and the Monday after Wimbledon (130 in IW/Miami, 180 in Monaco, 1000 in Madrid, 600 in Rome, 720 in RG)
- Nadal was defending 4260 points during the same period (360 in IW/Miami, 360 in Monaco, 180 in Barcelona, 360 in Madrid, 1000 in Rome and 2000 in RG)
- Nadal withdrew from IW before the shutdown. Djokovic was motivated and determined to play both IW and Miami.
===> It was mathematically impossible for Nole to lose the No1 ranking until Monaco and very unlikely to lose it until the Monday after Wimbledon... Nadal had too many points to defend during the clay swing, he'd have needed to win every clay Masters1000 and hope Djokovic would lose early in all those tournaments. So unlikely for a player who won his 19 first matches of the season. The only player who was close behind him was Nadal and he was defending loads of points. And was set to lose 360 points in IW. It would have taken a very improbable series of unfortunate circumstances for Nole to lose his No1 ranking between IW and Wimbledon.
Another reminder of the current context
Tomorrow the ranking will be..... 1) Alcaraz, 7675...... 2) Djokovic, 7595.......... differential: 80 points
Without the war and the special rule from Wimbledon 2020, the ranking would be.... 1) Djokovic, 9595..... 2) Alcaraz, 7855..... differential: 1740 points
Same observation when Alcaraz won IW and got back to No1 in March
Same observation when Alcaraz won Madrid and got back to No1 in May
Same observation between the end of 2022 and Adelaïde/AO... Djokovic spent many weeks between No2 and No5 with <1820 points behind the No1 (Medvedev or Alcaraz).
Now 3 more weeks can be added between next week and the week after Wimbledon, when things will FINALLY get back to normal.
Djokovic will be stuck at 389 weeks tomorrow. Without the pandemic and the war, he would already have 420 weeks if not more...
Any future player who wants this record in the next 30,... 50 years should target 420 instead of 390. There will be a huge asterisk if anyone gets 400 in the future. That person (whoever it is) will need 420 or his record will be insignificant.
