Hi All

I found a Gamma 5003 6pt locally. Does not seem to be the latest model.

Can anyone with experience let me know their thoughts about this line of machine?

Also what would be a fair price? I want to be able to quickly resell in case stringing is not for me.

I can send some in pics via PM if required.

Let me know if anyone can help

It's a solid machine, but lacks in some respects....primarily the base clamps (which are perfectly serviceable, just not the greatest).
Also likely has older side supports, but they will also work just fine.

Pending the price it should do everything a stringer needs from a machine.

How much are they asking?

I use a 5003 for my rackets and it works great. Get a wise tension head (with adaptor if needed) and you've got a professional stringing set up.

I was trying look at a Neos 1000 in Houston. Also found a Gamma 5003 as a backup.

Unfortunately the Neos 1000 guy is in Radio Silence mode at the moment (he said he was on vacation for 7 days and I waited, messaged me he was back and then went into Radio silence - probably sold it) and when I called the Gamma 5003 backup, it was sold.

Now back to square one and waiting for something to pop up.

Something else will pop up for ya at some point. If another NEOS 1000 or Ektelon model for that matter comes along and the price is right, tell whoever you're on the way with a cooler and cold beer in tow.

I would prefer a fixed swivel clamp machine (5003) over a glide bar machine like the NEOS..

The 5003 base clamps are cone lock.

You'd be at odds with many, who would prefer glide bars in this situation.

If I had 80+ year old fingers, I'd in no way want to mess with cone lock bases.

If the bases on the 5003 were "nice" (switch action, press down, etc) then i think you might be on to something.

Exactly my thought process when I posted what I did above, about another NEOS 1000/Ektelon popping up within striking distance.

I said I preferred a fixed swivel clamp machine (5003) over a glide bar machine like the NEOS. I didn't mention the bases, but if I did, I would prefer press down bases.

So......when you talk about a "machine", you don't consider it in its' entirety? A Gamma 5003 DOES NOT have press down bases, it has CONE LOCK bases.

I'm not at all surprised by your answer, by the way.

At any rate, a glide bar machine would be much easier to use, in general, than a Gamma 5003.

I owned a Gamma 4000 (fixed glide bar machine) a few years back and got a killer deal on a Gamma 5003. I couldn't stand it and switched to the NEOS after few months. If you have ever strung on both you will know that the Gamma 5003 is far more cumbersome....you have to unlock and lock both the bases, raise and lower the clamps, lock and unlock the clamps....I just found it super annoying vs the simplicity of the NEOS. I do think the mounting system is better on the Gamma 5003.

Having said that, the Gamma 5003 is not a 'bad' machine. I will take it over any dropweight any day. A "fair" deal is probably $700. If you dislike stringing you probably can unload it for $550 pretty quickly.

Second hand machines go quick with the rising prices of machines now. As a rule of thumb 50% of the retail price of the machine is a deal you should jump on. Of course depending on condition. If the machine needs servicing or additional parts, factor that into your price. Sometimes with used machines you get hand tools, other accessories and maybe some strings. You can factor all of that into your price.
