Gasquet retires

Guy peaked in 2002 when he reached No. 1 in the world and won two Slam titles - it was in the Boys category as a junior. Not enough firepower on the FH/serve in the men’s category to be truly elite.

Probably 2015 Wimbledon QF. That was a beautiful match that had it all.

One of the earliest matches I've seen him play was 2007 Estoril final where he lost to Djokovic. Djoko barely edged the first set, then proceeded to apparently tank the second set 0-6, and easily won the decider.

Didn't he have his "last match" or even "last French Open" multiple times before and yet played on? At least I feel like having heard the same in the past.

So many amazing memories - some good, many bad. One of my absolute favourites of the past 20 years, who may not have come close to living up to the hype, but was so much fun to watch anyway.

The Roland Garros match with Stan in 2013 is one of the best tennis matches I have ever seen. For the art of it as much as anything else. Until the 2018 Wimbledon semi (the second one...) it was my match of the decade.

Fabrice Santoro retired at the 2009 Paris Masters. But then he played one more match, at the 2010 Australian Open, to get the record of playing in majors in 4 different decades (1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s).

No, Gasquet. I'm very sure that I heard he would retire after RG during at least one of the last 2 editions as well, if not both. And then shortly after he was back as if nothing happened.
Gasquet announced his current retirement in October 2024.

I would just keep using my protective ranking until it runs out so I can collect as much money as possible without doing anything. I wouldn't even show up to the practice courts. I'd just eat the free food and hit on chicks.

Despite not having any big titles, the guy was well known in tennis, and at some point there even were high expectations of him.

The last few years of seeing all the guys I grew up watching retire, is giving me that same feeling I had when I watched Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 all those years ago - time marches on.

Fully got into tennis in mid 2007 when i was 21 and was fullllllly invested by 2008 so seeing Monfils, Gasquet, Wawrinka, Djokovic, etc at the end of the road makes me emotional. Grew up with them and the Big 4, Del Po, Verdasco, Giles Simon, Ferrer. They’re apart of my 20’s and 30’s
