Gasquet talks out of both sides of his mouth

He calls Fed the goat and then in the next sentence says Nadal is the toughest to play against??? How is this possible?

I think players think they "have" to say Fed is the goat Because it's politically correct .

Check it out :

Who is the G.O.A.T. in tennis?

"Roger Federer, no doubts about that! He is the best, but I think there is a chance for Rafael Nadal to overtake him. Also Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras have been legends, but Federer is better than them".

Who is the hardest player to play against?

"Rafael Nadal! He really is a tough opponent and a great tennis player".

Nadal is toughest is for Gasquet.

Federer is toughest for the field. His tennis is magical and heavenly.

Not sure what you are not getting.

Well Nadal has a winning record against I think the top 50?

While Fed has a losing record to almost all
Of the big four. If joker overtakes him then he is losing to all
Of them.

I think the stats show Nadal is the tougher player for everyone ....

That's why I never bought this bad matchup excuse Becaise Hust about everyone can use that excuse.

Sometimes the simple answer although painful is better : Rafa is simply better.

Toughness of an opponent depends on who you play, Youzhny for example says Federer is his toughest opponent - because he's never won a match against him before but has beaten Nadal several times.

Tennis is about match ups.

Like you said, Gasquet is being politically correct. He does say Nadal can overtake Fed, so he's playing it safe and using the "slam count" method. Once Nadal hits 17, I think any form of political correctness will go out the window, and everyone on tour will just call it directly for Nadal.

Fed's still very powerful on tour. If you are still an active pro, it's not the smartest move to go against him like that (unless you are a big 4 type like Murray, or someone rich enough not to care like Gulbis).

Makes perfect sense.

If you get beat by and opponent 6-0 6-0 in 40 minutes of being aced 3 to 7 hit rallies with them crushing winners you walk off the court feeling (oh well he outplayed me I never had a chance) and move on.

If you get beat by and opponent 6-0 6-0 after 3 hours of grinding out points with multiple break point chances..never having to face to many aces almost all point played out over 7 hit rallies and time after time being broken and seeing your chances slip away....you are mentally tired- and your body has been punished as well.

at the end of the day it's the same score but the 2nd version takes a greater toll on you.

and Nadal has done this for a decade now to the whole tour so I can't imagine player look forward to grinding and losing.

where with Fed- they could get lucky catch him on and off day and he hit's the errors for them.

I have always seen it as (when Fed is in the zone he is GOAT)
where as Rafa probably has the greatest intensity of all time...even when his play is a little off you always feel like the other player is under pressure (example Wawrinka losing that set in the AO) it wasn't Nadal so much as playing well as it was him just keeping the pressure on Stan.

To me, it's obvious most of the players on the tour think Nadal is greater than Federer. Even Gasquet is merely waiting for the slam count to even up so he can call Nadal GOAT without fear of offending the Federer mafia that has ruled the ATP for so long.

Gilles Simon was saying much the same thing last week about how beating Nadal was his biggest achievement on tour. Most of the locker room feel the same way.

...........

if Nadal is generally better, he should have more majors, more WTF and more weeks at Number 1. Unfortunately he is not.

He is a tough opponent for the field because he fights every point like his life is at stake.

Fed , on the contrary, enjoys playing . Will experiment and bring out his artistry , no matter what the score his.

For Fed, what matters is the way tennis is to be played. For Rafa, it is how to win the next point.

This.

I was wondering when DK would start up these kind of threads again ;)

Why is this concept SO difficult for people to grasp??

The toughest player to play against right now is different from the greatest player of all time. He's saying that Federer is the greatest tennis player of all time, but at the moment Nadal is the toughest challenge for other players to play against.

It's pretty simple.

This is true

Toughest does not equal greatest.

Nadal is the toughest player to compete against because he simply never gives up and its physically much more taxing to keep up with him because of the long grueling rallies. Federer used to blast people off in his prime and it doesn't take much to lose to him.

I completely agree with Gasquet here.

Fed experiment ??? Are you kidding?

There's a lot you can say about Fed but even the most die hard Fed fan would disagree with you....

In fact not changing his game has been his biggest problem. He keeps playing the same way while Nadal is the one who keeps changing.

As of late however Fed has made some changes finally!! Like a new stick and volleying more .....but it's a case of too little too late.....he should have changed after his losses in 2008.

I think you got this wrong, Federer and Nadal both are concerned about winning matches and nothing else.

Federer's tennis looks more "beautiful" than Nadal's but Federer plays this way because in his book that's the best way to win matches. If really Federer was interested in "the way tennis is to be played" he would S & V on every point, since he's a big fan of S &V.

Also it could be that Federer is the GOAT career-wise, but Nadal is the toughest right now. Likewise, they won't say Sampras is the toughest to play, since he's over 40 now.

Nobody like's Nastall's one-dimensional, hideous tennis. It's harder to deal with a topspin forehand monkey who runs like a gazelle than it is a player with variety.

To me, it's obvious most of the players on the tour think Nadal is greater than Federer.
Complete rubbish. Nowdays he's a generally harder opponent, but ****-all except the complete morons (just like in the wider world) would consider him greater than Federer.

There is hardly a metric in the top 10 important categories where Nadal tops Federer.

so one of the reasons federer is better is because he is willing to experiment and bring out his artistry?

This thread is two pages deep but I'm wondering if someone has pointed out Richard beat Roger when he was a teenager still. Obviously he feels you can catch Roger on an off day and beat him. Rafa, meanwhile, is just a monster day in day out. Doesn't mean his career matches up to Roger's in any way

It is simple. Fed had a 5 year head start. He is saying that Rafa is better and will overtake Fed.

I also agree Nadal is the toughest player. He constantly finds a way to cheat against you esepcially when momentum is on your side and eliminates you that way time after time. You can't outsmart Nadal's criminal mindset.

Also you are the goat for past achievements, not for actual level of play.

No doubt that Federer's achievement are far better than Nadal's, while Nadal is clearly the better player of the two today.

What if Gasquet had said: "Laver is the GOAT, but Nadal is the toughest to play against?" Would it be as hard for you to get it?
