Gasquet withdraw from US Open

well said, vlad. the whole notion of playing with pain is foolish. i weight train and what my trainer always told me was, "listen to your body!" it's good, simple advice and often can prevent more serious injuries.

imo Gasquet can win one slam max. Those comparing him to Fed need to wake up, Fed has more guts than Gasquet can ever dream of.
Talent alone doesn't win slams.

I feel the same way now. I see the pattern of his injuries/retirement from
matches with various physical ailments. When I see this pattern, I've got
to suspect his mental comitment in this game.

You might be right but remember he is still very young. Federer also wasnt know so much for guts or heart when he was 20 or 21 either.

I thought Fed was a headcase at 20/21, but still had guts. does that make sense? felt the same about safin. there's something else about gasquet...

I remember I saw a YouTube clip of Federer crying uncontrolably after he lost to
Henman at his home land (basel? indoor) tourney.

Young players often have a few heart wrenching match that become a turning
point and really grow up mentally. Some event that makes them realize
they better get serious.

Then again, I have seen many French trained players who never ever
grow up or take it serious until or even after they retire.
Some just want to make that one bea-u-tiful shot, one tournament of
oh-so-beautiful tennis, one beautiful life...

This week at US Open, the "we are not best but we play attractive tennis " French tennis looks
more lame than ever...

Don't forget the immense pressure put on Gasquet by the French Federation/Media. Federer on the other hand never had this pressure put on him by any Swiss source. There are people in Federer's hometown who don't know who he is. If anything Gasquet needs to separate himself from the French, maybe hire his own new coach who isn't French. He needs to start taking some initiative in his career and maybe it will rub off on his game and his attitude.

Gasquet said in his interview that his goal was the 4th round. Is this a good thing trying to be realistic or should he be aiming higher than that at this stage of his career?

Lets forget about Gasquet (even though I would have liked to see it)...What do you think about the matchup with Lopez now? DY definitely has a chance.

Gasquet was given $1 million by the USTA to withdraw from the match.

(This is insider information, please don't share this with anyone).

assuming nothing shady (i.e. involving money) is going on with respect to his withdrawal, i have to agree with the previous post, he is a p****y. I just heard his interview, with fever and sore throat - i have had real bad fevers and sore throats, and I sounded MUCH worse. His voice sounded fine. I would hate to be a real fan of his...

I am so tired of people saying what a great player he is, when he does this sh*t all the time. Great player's don't act like p*ssies! They play no matter what. Look at Agassi last year.

yar, he should've definitely played. If he couldn't play anymore during the match, then just retire. At least that's what I would've done.

What was said about Gasuet is right (amazing talent / no fighting spirit). He don't play Young, he lose to Hewitt for a blister but remember also his attitude in Wimb: after losing to Fed all he could say was :"well I reached the SF, that's good...blabla". How can he beat the best and become the best if he 's not putting all his energy to do so? Something's wrong..
Some of you think he should hire a more brutal coach but unfortunately, he tried that one with no success. He was coached by Benhabiles (former Roddick's coach), well known for his hard way of learning. Unfortunately it did not last more than 6 months ,Gasquet could'nt stand the rythm; and the frenchie came back to a more "normal" coach, Deblicker.

But what on earth could wake this kid up? I really don't know.
I think winning one slam would (with his current attitude) be a miracle.
What a waste.....
