Great gesture by Stan Wawrinka. The world no. 23 has decided to play the 2018 edition of Geneva Open next week without taking any appearance fee. 'No, I didn't reach any financial agreement with Geneva.

Yes, I will be there. For the tournament, for the fans, I am looking forward to playing.'Wawrinka's initial demand to play Geneva was an appearance fee of $500,000, he was offered $80,000, but he considered it as a symbolical offer and at the end refused the total money.

On Monday in the press conference, the former world no. 3 admitted that his relationship with organizers isn't ideal. 'I felt since the beginning I wasn't well welcomed,' Wawrinka admitted.

Great gesture by him after asking 500K and getting only 80K to reject them? Hummm
I like Stan, but first he needs to recover his form, then he should ask for big fees

500k is too much, especially if he doesn't make it too far. But he is still a star with draw power especially at home in the French part of Switzerland. 80k is an insult.

I assume he said yes anyway because he's the defending champ and can't afford to lose 250 points right now.

It should be illegal for tournaments to pay players for appearence fee's. Getting players is part of the tournaments agreement with the atp.

Very strange attitude from a premier Swiss tournament towards a home player and 2 times defending champion. Kudos to Stan for turning down their derisory offer and deciding to play anyway. Bet they wouldn't have treated a certain other Swiss player that way!

You must not know the history between Federer and Basel TD Roger Brennwald. They too had a fallout over negotiations, Brennwald ran to the press about it, Federer decided to keep his commitment and play his hometown tournament anyway without an appearance fee, and in turn Brennwald used that money to give Nadal one.

Strange attitude the Swiss have towards their 2 star players!

You know you've made it when you consider $80000 "symbolical." Next time accept it and donate it to a good cause. Like the People for the Ethical Treatment of Stanimals organization.

I think the idea of an appearance fee is a slap in the face to other lower ranked players. If tournaments have this must extra money, it should be distributed into the prize money- especially the earlier rounds. Ridiculous that doubles players and qualifiers struggle for money that the tournament ultimately withholds IMO.

It comes down to a business decision. Tournaments get more than what they put in when they secure top players' participations. It could also be looked at as an incentive for lower ranked players to get better and join the club of the top players. Aside from this, I agree that a more even prize distribution would be desirable. Nadal has defended that cause for a long time.
