Georgia State Championships

Our USTA League team is preparing to play in the Georgia State Championships. We just learned that there is a default rule: "The Default rule for Georgia State Championships? Any team defaulting a court for any reason will be fined $100 per court defaulted. The fine must be paid in the tournament room prior to the team’s next match. If it’s the team’s last match of the tournament, they must pay prior to leaving. If a team does not pay the fine, a grievance will be filed against all members listed on the team information sheet, which could result in suspension from any USTA League play until the fine is paid. Any matches played during that time will be reverted to losses."

We have a small team of 8 players and this rule is too risky for us to commit to attend the sate championships. Does other States have such a reule? Does it seem fair?

I believe the rule is in place to ensure the matches are played so players get to play the matches they paid for and travel to play. I imagine they want to prevent a team that has been eliminated from defaulting individual courts or just leaving and defaulting an entire match in their last one or two matches.

I think the league rules mention potential penalties for defaulted matches in playoffs, but I think they leave it to the section/local governance to determine the penalty.

North Carolina has the same rule/penalty at USTA league state championships for the reasons that schmke mentions - prevents teams from leaving early and defaulting lines/matches if they have no chance of winning the tournament, and ensures that teams will get X # of matches at the tournaments.

That's a great rule. I played states in SC years ago and we had a meaningless Sunday match that neither team was advancing from. The other team defaulted 2 singles to me and I was ****ed that I paid for a hotel the night before only to get a default.

Great rule, IMO.

If you have a small team that can't field enough lines, then pass the berth to a team that can compete to their fullest.

as someone who has been to the Georgia State Championships 4 times I am very glad for the Rule.

The time off to go to Rome,Macon,Augusta (2x) plus cost of hotel and travel.

and when we went to Rome it was during the highest gas prices.

had some local team decided to default I would have been pretty upset and while it only cost them $100 it still would have cost me more....kinda wish the rule gave the $100 to the other team instead of the USTA so to help pay for needless hotel stay.

we had a team of 10 players but we only ever took 8 to state anyway.

Nickel and diming...all that is. I had to pay the $13 (which is a lot of money because I'm in between steady jobs now) for a 6.5 combo team a few seasons ago. We paid our money got the team together. Only thing was...nobody else in the league was able to field a team for us to play. So instead of refunding our money. They sent us to the playoffs and charged us more money. Yay USTA.

 weird....we had that happen once and the just cancelled the league and we all got a refund.

I thought their was some kinda rule about you have to "compete" in a local league to get a playoff invite.

I know for us any player participating in State has to play at minimum 2 local matches in the league the playoffs are based out off

maybe that's a local rule

We did play one match to 4 games against a senior mens team that was in the same boat...I just get frustrated with the USTA...

Who's nickel and diming? If you can't afford to pay the $13 USTA fee without complaining, perhaps you need to re-evaluate your financial situation. $13 is not a large amount of money. You could save that by not driving to your local grocery store. Invest in a bicycle and save gas. Cut out things in your life that you don't need...

It's a great rule. Haven't seen it mentioned but it also helps maintain a bit of integrity to the playoff. Could prevent an eliminated team from defaulting all courts to a team still in contention.
