Get ready for another Fortress to fall: Djokovic wants to play longer than Fed

Novak Djokovic could play forever. Like Federer, he can play on natural athleticism/talent and avoid injuries in his 30's. And his mindset has been so relentlessly positive; even in his 2016-18 decline, he seemed so positive and committed to the game regardless of results.

"Get ready for another fortress to fall" is right. Watch out Roger, he's coming for your records!

Its personal too...despite PR campaign to the contrary there's no love lost between these two and nothing would make Novak happier than to break a major record of Fed's himself.

This is why he has delayed his retirement.

So we all know one of the top reasons Fed is considered GOAT by his fans, and why they excuse every loss over the past 10+years is because he's "old" and been staying competitive at this "old" age. Well, looks like the apparent unique nature of this achievement is under assault, as Djokovic, himself one of the most durable players in history, has his eye on extending his longevity even past Fed's...so my question is: Do you think he can do it and if so how will his results compare to Fed's?

Djokovic is below his career average for returning on HCs this year, and that never happened except in 2017. He is currently almost exactly at 32% of return games. For just about anyone else that would be a stellar year, but you have to compare an ATG against himself. He had monster return stats between 2011 and 2016. His service game is just about topped out right now. He has outserved himself this year over 2013, by a hair, so technically this is his best ever serving year on HC. It's also a trend now to see service stats continue to go up, in general, while return stats go down. Height may be driving that.

In order to stay at the same winning level he has to increase his serving % in games by 1% for every 1% he loses in returning. The key stat to watch for next year and in coming years is what happens with this return game. If it falls below 30% - and it will eventually - then he will have to serve even better to go on winning majors.

Gonzalez wiped the floor with Nadal at the 07 Aussie. He blew him right off the court with just a booming forehand. It was one of the greatest performances of all time. I’m sorry but beating a Berrettini and Medvedev to win a slam is not the same as beating a Djokovic or another all time great. Nadal has had a ton of luck at the US Open. If Nadal runs into a well playing Federer or a Djokovic on hard court he loses. I can’t wait to see Nadal take his beating at the WTF.

So Gonzalez wiping the floor with Nadal, who's won over 60% of his majors on a clay-court, is an indication that Gonzalez is somehow a great opposition for Federer? LOL! Using your incredible logic, Dustin Brown, Lukas Rosol, not to mention the w*anker from Australia, must all be really tough players to beat :-D

When a player has lost just two matches at one slam in 15 years it’s inevitable to get that total number up there, particularly when it’s a three-horse race. From top to bottom the closest it was after RG’16 (fedr 17, Nadal 14, Joe Kovic 12). Joe Kovic has now closed it to four after fedr had widened that overall first to third gap to eight prior to Wimby’18.

Superb post, Tom! Omala, don't you ever suffer a dip in form? :)

I think that big 3 will always be in top 5. They always can play 1/4,1/2 of GS or 1/4,1/2 of masters. Thats about 5-6 thousand points, which is enough for top 5.

Setting aside the off-topic posts from the bored mugs above, I think youre right. MuGGen is so sad that even a 49 year old Djoker and 54 year old Fed w/walker & dialysis support could still run circles round them smh

True, this seems to be the pattern of greats over the past 20-25 years tho, even goin back to Pete, right? Soon as they become less effective off the return, they start overemphasizing their weapons - Pete's MONSTER serve, Roger's serve & fhand, Rafa putting more effort into the serve & fhand etc. It's only natural Novak will follow the same course. My major concern is what will keep him going after Fedal are gone? Dude thrives off a challenge and once the only two greats are gone, he might just hang it up...dude doesn't get a high off scrubbing away mugs (unlike some other goats we could mention)

It is not so much his age at 38 as he still can bring his almost peak game. Just less often as he ages (makes it harder to win slams). It is the fact that the two guys chasing him are also ATG's who are 5 and 6 years younger.

Of course Djoker can hang around till 38 as there will be no ATG's to deal with. Will Djoker have to deal with a 6 years younger ATG at WC at 38? Will he have to deal with the best clay court player of all time at RG who is 5 years younger?

Yes, age is an issue (not THE reason or an excuse) but Fed would have won a slam and maybe two this year if it was not for TWO younger ATG's...
He wasn't winning RG this year regardless.

So only 1 slam.

But he lost because of his own chocking tendencies more than because he had to deal with an ATG.

This excuse worked in 2015 when Djoker was just too good. In 2019, Fed was just weak mentally like Cilic.

Easily COULD have beaten a tired Thiem.

No one but Djoker would be able to take him to a 5th, and he would not have choked that to anyone else.

Be that as it may, it still doesn't excuse his loss.

He was good enough to beat Djoker but that's pretty much Fed in a nutshell: always the bridesmade, never the bride. Unreliable in big close matches against Djokodal to the very end with the exception of AO 2017.

After all there is a difference between 2004 AO-2010 AO Fed and the Fed after that, from the mental perspective.Although Fed pre 2010 AO wasn't a mental giant either(especially against Nadal on clay), still I believe he was better in this departament.Things got worse with the initial 40-15 at the USO 2011.

Wimb 2008 and AO 2009 were despicable though. Those are really the matches that defined him mentally.

I can see Djoko remain a better mover than Fed age wise, but Djoko needs to go bigger on his forehand if he can longer grind his opponents down.

dude I work in a compliance department of one of the biggest banks in the world and since I don't have a wife and kids (at least yet) I invest like half of my salary so yeah totally you're right, keep believing that internet forum trolls are idiots. If I didn't drink so much on the weekends I'd invest 10-20% more easily too

I don't see that happening...he might go heavier off both sides but I have a hard time imagining Novak going the big serve 'n forehand route

Gonna last long enough to shatter Fed's slam & #1 record
After that it's anyone's guess
Lol see ya in a year (or not)

Nolan just feeling a bit of relevance deprivation ranked 2. The delusions of grandeur with Djokodal are never far from the surface. Neither of those guys are the ball strikers or athletes that Fed is.

Bookmark it haterers.

You've never seen me dancing on someone's grave either, like you and that sad granny are doing in this thread, you little man.

Yes, I will miss this original account. I am sure he will never be back. I'm not the one that got him banned big man.

If I had it my way nobody would be banned unless it was blatantly egregious.

I didn't realise the guy was banned. The haterers thrive on pain and I thought he might be enjoying it. That's why I bumped it but a ban is another level of flagellation I guess.

Who actually bothers to waste the mods time reporting any of this stuff to get people banned? I would've thought the footsoldier trolls would be first in the firing line, ahead of straight tribute band trolls and palerer imitations like this guy.

It's the footsoldiers who kill it, folks who fill post counts with stuff like 40-15, 24-18, 20>18>16 and/or crapping up GPPD and PR threads with pointless drivel, just posting links and pushing the same tired s**tbox agendas with no real insight or new, noteworthy information. Some analysis and some commitment at some point might be nice.

He'll have to if he wants to break Fed's records...that is if the old man isn't still playing at 50?
