Getting back into tennis, found some old racquets.

Hi all. I decided to register on the forum to take advantage of the vast array of knowledge if found so far searching the forum. This is my first post here.

So, after playing "for fun", not on any college or high school team, I stopped playing tennis after college. Now, about a dozen years later, one of my neighbors has gotten me back into it and I've gotten the bug again.

After just two matches (if you can call them that) I'd give myself a solid 2.5 player rating. Though I was never more than an intermediate player anyway. However I have found that I am hurting myself much more than when I was younger. I guess I'm not invicible anymore!

While searching my garage for a racquet to play with, I actually found that I still had a few of the racquets I used to play with and which I also bought for loaners back in the day when I would just get people to come out and hit some balls with me.

I'm not sure what to do with them, because I'm not a collector or anything, and I am thinking about getting something modern and more fitting my current skill level.

What I found where -

Donnay Revolutive Athena (I think this may have been my dearly departed Mom's).
Wilson Pete Sampras Autograph (I bought this sometime around 1996 at a certain tennis shop in Baltimore we are know. After doing some research on this forum I think this is the same thing as the Wilson Stars and Stripes).
Yamaha Secret 10 (I bought this in 1997 at Play it Again sports after I broke my Yamaha Secret EX, gosh did I love that rackquet).
Prince Graphite Lite XB (bought sometime in the 90's to use as a loaner).
Head Agassi Radical (bought sometime in the 90's to use as a loaner).

I even found an old wooden racquet and an alluminum racquet that my parents had back in the 1970's.

My question is this: What should I do with these racquest? Like I said, I'm not a collector. I loved the Pete Wilson Autograph, but I think it does not fit my current playing level. I had it regripped and restrung and it is pretty sweat, to be sure.

Back in the day, my favorites where my Yamaha Secret EX and my real favorite was a Fischer racquet that I can't remember the name of (it was this kind of lavender and blue/purple color). So since Yamaha has gone bye bye I am eyeing the new Fischer "game improvement" racquets.

You can sell all/most of them for a nice sum of cash. The racket you have all go for around 80 bucks each (depending on condition).

You can, of course, also try out the rackets and see if any of them suit you. Fact of the matter is, rackets from 10, 20 years ago are just as good as anything on the market today. You'll find that some people absolutely refuse to switch to anything "modern" because they feel the old classics play the best. You'll have to see if this applies to you.

Thanks guys.

(LOL @ fortunecookiesjc).

I may give the Wilson another go as I just had it restrung and regripped.

The Donnay was a nice racquet too.

I don't remember playing with the Yamaha Secret 10 much, but it definitely feels different from the Secret EX I used to play with as best as I can remember.

I need to bring them in to work and see if I can use the scales down in shipping to see how much these things weigh. I am pretty sure I'd be happier with something lighter than the Wilson.

If you don't want them, sell them. But don't sell it to "Play Again Sports" or anything like that. You won't get your money worth...

E b a y is a great way to unload unwanted rackets.

Dear Mig1NC,

I take my Yamaha EX and 10 out for a ride regularly. Why don't you get another one? The EX is easy to find on the big bay, as well as on tt for sale thread, and they tend to still be in good condition! Why fix what ain't broke?

Thanks for all the advice guys. I played pretty well with my Pete Wilson Autograph last weekend (I won, after all), but I found that with my shoulder problems and long but slow swing speed I was slightly under powered. I think I'm going to put them all up for sale or trade. I'm going to go ahead and start with the TT classifieds and will post pictures of them all.
