Both the men's and women's teams lost to Keiser at the NAIA national indoors finals 2/5. It was the men's team's 1st loss in 7 years. GGC only has outdoor courts-I dont know how many indoor matches they played over those 7 years. Founding GGC coach Chase Hodges had left to join UTR as a VP in June '22. When GGC was 1st formed, Chase was able to recruit high level players who weren't able to play for D1-e.g Kevin Konfederak who had a career high of 485 in 2012. Now in recent years with rules of amateurism somewhat relaxed, players in the ATP 500 can play D1 tennis; I assume they are OK as long as their earnings dont exceed expenses.
Anyway, I dont think we will ever see again a 173 win streak for a tennis team. I am sure that streak would have ended sooner if GGC had been able to schedule vs D1 teams-usually only Citadel would play them and get creamed. While GGC used to be able to recruit P5 level players, GGC is now more the level of a decent MM. Still as an Atlantan, I am glad in recent years we can claim multiple national championships-years of NAIA Nattys, a D3 men's championship (Emory), and further back a National D1 for the women's GT team (2009 with Bryan Shelton coaching) and a runnerup finish for UGA women (2019). I had high hope for GA men going deep after fall returns with #1 Quinn and 5 super seniors on the roster but after their rough start this dual season, NCAA QFs may be the best they can do.
