Hi

First Experience with Poly.

String : Tier One Ghostwire 19G
Tension : 46 lbs FULL BED (mains and crosses same tension)
Frame : Yonex VCORE 95 2018 340g @ 9 HL

7/16/21 - 46 lbs Full Bed Ghost Wire 19g strung @ Express Tennis.
7/17/21 - Gamma STT read 46 lbs (the red meter, mine seems quite accurate when testing original tension right after stringing)
7/18/21 - 1 1/2 hour doubles. Gamma STT read 42 lbs after.
7/19/21 - 1/2 hour singles. Gamma STT reads 41 lbs after
7/21/21 - 1/2 hour singles. Gamma STT reads 40 lbs after
7/23/21 - 1/2 hour singles. Gamma STT reads 40 lbs after
7/25/21 - 1 1/2 hour doubles. Gamma STT reads 40 lbs after
7/26/21 - 1/2 hour singles. Gamma STT reads 40 lbs after
7/28/21 - 1/2 hour singles + 1 hour doubles. Gamma STT reads 40 lbs after
8/4/21 - 1/2 hour singles + 1 hour doubles.. Gamma STT reads 40 lbs after
8/5/21 - 1/2 hour singles. Gamma STT reads 40 lbs after
8/6/21 - 1/2 hour singles. Gamma STT reads 40 lbs after

Basically the last 3 weeks (7 hours of actual play time) and las it has remained at basically 40 lbs, playing very consistently with great spin, strings not sticking out of place. Not feeling anything in my arm. (I bought my Vcore 95 used by a tennis coach so if anything it is more flexible than stock)

My previous String was TRIAX 16G which would be great initially for the first 3-4 hours then start moving a little and have the best spin for the last 1 hour of use, total around 6-7 hours of use before which it would lose resilience and start rocket launching.

Is the fact that tension has stabilized a good thing or a bad thing? Is it time to cut them out due to precaution for arm health? Or can I just wait till 8/16/21 or till string breaks?

Thanks!

If it doesn’t feel dead, then it’s not. Strings play better when they are freshly strung, so really up to you if you want to restring before it breaks. I wouldn’t go longer than 3 months though between restringing if playing more than twice a week.

I have been warned that no poly string should be played more than 10 (to 15) hours or 1 (to 1.5 months) month whichever comes earlier no matter what the String Tension Tester reads.

Im quite amazed how good this GHOST WIRE 19g is compared to the TRIAX 16g. Already has lasted longer, better spin, better comfort (partially due to 19g) and same yet more consistent power, half the price.... Triax is already ready to be cut out by this point for me.

If you haven't noticed a difference in it's performance that is unsatisfactory I would give it more time.

Do the mains still snap back if you pull them to the side with your fingers? Generally Polys will take turn downhill between the 10-20 hour mark.

What tension did you run the Triax 16G and were these strung on a lockout(LO) or Constant Pull(CP) machine? Happy to hear you like the Ghost Wire 19g. I stock it but haven't had any clients give it a shot yet.

Yes so far so good.

Honestly I dont know what kind of machine - looked like the a fancy Wilson Bailardo from a quick google search.... at Express Tennis (name flipped to avoid TW ****ing it out)

Same place/machines strung both but tensions were different.

Triax 16G was at 52 lbs
Ghostwire 19G was at 46 lbs

That would be a CP. Thanks for the info. Helps me recommend a tension for clients that may have used Triax previously.

I also did a Triax 16G mains at 52 lbs, Ghostwaire 17G hybrid at 48 lbs.... First session was awesome. But about 10 days later the string bed was locked up and spin was gone and the lauching started.

The Triax 16 (52lbs) / Ghostwire 17 (48 lbs) string bed felt a little bit softer than Triax 16 FULLBED (52lbs).... so I suspect GW 17 FULLBED (46-48 lbs) would be in the ballpark of TRIAX 16 FULLBED (52lbs).

This test was a different racquet thought (Prince Phantom 100)

The only help I can give is that when a fully Poly set up goes dead, you can really, really feel it. I think the playing time is a good rule of thumb but if the strings still feel good to you, they most likely are fine.

when they go bad, it’s pretty obvious.

Gee,

How I wish that were true in practice with actual humans.

When players only have one frame in use the slide is slow enough most players don't realize it.

Another reason to keep two sticks in rotation. The more freshly strung one will help you know when the older bed is bagged out.

Good point. I didn’t think of it from a one vs two racquet perspective.

Added 1.5 hrs doubles on 8/8/21... STT showed 40 lbs again

Added 1.5 hrs doubles on 8/11/21... STT finally dropped to 38 lbs... Also felt like balls were getting too close to the line at end of session... Decided to cut it out.

Then I cut the main string with scissors to see if any tension remained...

Apparently string was not dead! There was so much tension that the string is cut seperated quite a bit...

I like writing Tenis Sexpress instead

Welcome to the wonderful world of poly, enjoy your addiction :D

Ghost Wire is a good way to start. Good string.

I think there is also a gray area where poly isn't ideal anymore (probably worse than a decent multi) but still somewhat playable.

After 20 hours and 2 months it might not be acceptable anymore for a pro or college player but you can still hit with it unless you already have elbow problems (but then you shouldn't play poly at all most likely).

On the other hand when you use it 6 months it probably is totally dead.

Imo poly only makes sense if you play at least 5-6 hours a week and if you string yourself. Poly generates more spin but gilles Simon has beaten Federer with a full multi bed so you can play decently with a multi.

If you are a guy who maybe plays once a week and who occasionally doesn't hit for a couple weeks at all then just get a multi because at 2hr/week string breaking is no big issue and multi withstands just being in the frame without play better.

But if you play 5+ hours a week, you string yourself (and don't hate it) then you can get a reel and string every month and enjoy a great fresh poly.

If money is an issue I would recommend using a mid to lower (not the cheapest ****) price range poly and get a used stringing machine, a 45 dollar pros pro reel might not be as good as a 150 bucks high end string but better a fresh cheaper poly than an old high end poly.
