Gilles Simon

This is not a name I was familiar with until this Wimbledon. I was even more surprised that he was in the top 10! I have never seen him play before, so I want to hear peoples opinions on him. His ranking tells me he is a good player, but is he a real contender or just another one of those players who got to the top by beating nothing but low ranked players?

i have a feeling that he will most likely be just another flash in the pan when looking back in retrospect 10 years from now. but he played great last year during the HC season, and caused upsets left and right until people figured out his game. he lost some confidence after that.

Simon is one of my favorites... I've been really frustrated with him lately. He seems to beat himself these days. Don't know what's up.

Not trying to be rude at all, but did you watch any tennis last year?

well, i can understand your surprise: appart from monfils' retirement at the AO, he didn't beat anybody in the top30 since the beginning of the year, and in 2009 he had a 21/18(18!) W/L record prior to wimbledon, which is pretty pale for a supposed top10 player... he won most of his points in the 2nd half of 2008, so he will drop out of the top10 rapidly if he doesn't get better results than he did so far in 2009.

Gilles Simon has my respect.

Here is a relatively small guy, who can get the best of what he has. He is a fighter, does not choke. A smart player who also respects his opponents.
He deserves his ranking.

I have to give him credit for playing as well as he does for having the body of a 16 year old girl but I think I like him the least out of almost all the male tennis players. I have seen him constantly complaining on court when he is losing. He seems like a real d**ce and I half agree with everyone when they say he is a pusher but that's just my opinion.

I have to admit though, Gilles Simon makes tennis a lot more fun for me because I enjoy rooting against him. Watching him lose is a lot of fun especially because I root against very few players.

Gilles Simon needs some time out of the Top 10 to get his head back on right and to make a move.

He can't keep coasting on his seeding forever.

I'm a fan of Simon, but when I actually looked at his grand slam results from last year, and also his MS results, I couldn't believe he got to the top 10. He only managed three third-rounds, and also went out first round at the French. So I don't know how his results got him to the top 10.

As for his loss against Ferrero, I thought beforehand that Simon would have no chance. Ferrero is a similar player, but more aggressive and as consistent. Simon prefers an opponents pace, and a faster court suits the players like Simon. He prefers when a player can attack him, and he is able to use their pace and get the speed off from the court. Ferrero isn't an attacking player, and Simon has no way of going through a player like Ferrero. He reminds me of Andy Murray a little, but without as much variety and power.

All the comments like 'Simon is a mug' are so far from being true. Simon uses his brain as much as anyone on the tour.

Players started figuring out his game, which is to push until there is an opening, then going for the winner. Lately they are going for the winner before Simon does, thus totally defeating his game. Plus, he is no longer hitting those winners like he used to.

I've never seen Simon complain on court. he's a solid player who just hasn't been playing his best tennis this year.

Did you watch the match against Ferrero ? In the first 7 games, Simon was going through Ferrero like through butter (16 winners to 3 UEs at that stage if I remember correctly). But his serve was off, a recurrent problem of his. He got frustated by that fact and Ferrero did a good job of punishing his second serves. Simon's frustration increased with the loss of the first set in the tie-break (in which ironically Ferrero hit an amazing return winner on one of Simon's first serves) and he turned into a UE machine for the remaining of the match.

he can play some good matches, but he's usually a pretty boring player.
