Giovanni the Giant: 6"8 guy with one handed backhand is making having a breakout year!

Highlights from the win over Bublik:

Man, I think this guy could be a problem for the tour. Moves great for 6'8". Net game is looking nice. The forehand is huge, and his one handed backhand looks solid, if inconsistent. And his serve is really coming along. It's already really good as is, but if he can up it even just a little more and work on placement, he's going to be tough to break. Really looking forward to seeing him on grass.

Plus Emmanuel Planque a very solid coach!

The sample size is obviously small, but he moves better than all 6'8 and above players, Janowicz included. Some incredible movement, especially forward.

Very smooth. It does look good, but I see him getting stuck in his BH corner. Absolute/objective speed isn't great, just obviously the best we've seen on a player that big

And I love, LOVE that this dude is hitting 1HBH DONKEY KICKS at his height. I hit that shot in practice but I'm a lot smaller lol

It is still too early to talk big, but

One think about his BH that I prefer compared to Tsitsipas & Shapovalov is that the dude knows how to slice and to chip back returns.

Emmanuel Planque is a solid professional coach, and professional coaching matters.

His forecourt movement to the net is excellent and reminds me of Krajicek.

Yep. Very "big cat" like. Up and back movement is probably superior to his lateral movement.

Love his movement and court coverage. Best ever seen from someone over 6'6". Med covers the court well but it is ugly to watch while this bigguy's movement is so much better and pretty to watch.

But backhand looks like a nightmare.

At worst, he could pull a Steve Johnson backhand. He'd still have a better serve, better volleys, better overhead, equal forehand, equal movement. And to top it off, we haven't even seen him on grass, yet. This kid has so much potential.

I don't think his OHBH is bad at all. He just broke Etcheverry twice in a row by rallying from the back of the court (to take the set) and his backhand held up well. Don't really know what people are talking about calling it "not pretty" or "a nightmare".

You don't out-rally Etcheverry on clay with a backhand that's a liability.

He ripped a few winners with it. It seems very compact.

So his European height is 2,03m - which makes him about 5cm taller than Zverev, Medevedev, Tsitsi
all these move better, have a better serve and better groundstrokes than him - I don't see the hype

He is Chris Eubanks from France, the backhand looks about similar honestly :)

And to your point about him playing basketball, I think you underestimate how these guys move

not a good sign if Zverev moves much better than him.

If Karlovic or Isner didn't play basketball, Perricard is probably the same reason, because his basketball just wasn't as good as his tennis. I know. shocker.

Some nice things to see , but god he choked so bad when he was ahead
Give him a break, it was the first time he'd even won a match at an ATP tournament. He got nervous when the title was right within his grasp.

And he still pulled through after some horrible, horrible misses that could've caused other players to crumble.

He seemed relaxed when he was down. I knew if he had to win it had to be on Tomas’s serve

What a tight, tense way to take the title, 9-7 in the third set tiebreaker. Up to #66 in the ATP live rankings!

Highlights from the final:

I counted three crackerjack backhands down the line in the first set, including one on the first point shown. Really liking this guy's game and potential. I think that in the next year or two his serve can become an even bigger weapon, the groundstrokes can become more consistent, and his transition game/volleys can be fine tuned. But the foundation is all there.

Absolutely on-board with Gio! Among other atypical qualities: a one-hander, who plays attacking tennis. Wow. What a concept, and relief from the monotony of two-handed blandness. Hope he has a long career and deep runs everywhere.

Was thinking of making a thread on him when I first saw him racking up Challengers earlier this year. But, you snooze you lose, and @GRASScaraz beat me to it!

The serving numbers in his qualifying matches at Stuttgart are something.
37 aces, 5 doubles. 68% first serve. Averaged 137 on 1st serve, 127 on 2nd!

I swear... the ATP must be trying to further the monotony by actually going out of their way to pair 1HBH'ers as early as possible... Who does GMP draw straight out of qualies in Stuttgart...? Musetti. Jesus guys... I know it's supposed to be randomized to a point, but if we look at some of the other questionable stuff the ATP does, I'm sure they could somehow find a way to at least "randomly" spread out the 1HBH'ers more often.... Sheesh!

I see. Though, OTOH, Musetti is a very winnable opponent for Gio on grass.

This is something they do routinely. Pairing players of the same nationality together, and the 1 handers.

He lost to Musetti despite serving 21 aces. Same score in both tiebreak 11-9 and had set points in both. Just needed a few more volleys and put away FHs to land in
He also needs to improve his return, but it’s hard for a 6ft8 guy to become a good returner overnight.

Also, don’t have to hit 2 first serves every time.
