Giovanni the Giant: 6"8 guy with one handed backhand is making having a breakout year!

Making 4R in first debut is not bad at all.

Hey, and this run is quite similar to Raonic’s first known Slam run in AO 2011.

Musetti didn’t really have much of an issue with the serve in Stuttgart. Went 0/8 on BP and had a better first serve win % than Gio did which is never a good sign. He can block back returns and play the sort of cat and mouse grass tennis that guys like Ruusuvuori can’t. I’d probably take Musetti, but 5 sets is different, and Gio will surely have learned.
Feel like GMP would prefer facing say, Rublev or even Fritz (who actually looked pedestrian against Zverev serve until the 5th) over Musetti.

Plus, tactically GMP should have actually gone after Musetti FH wing.

Was wondering if he could keep up the momentum. Good to see. But feel bad for rune.. still he made a mint over in the desert!

The win over Shelton is particularly amusing because Shelton often goes into his matches with a certain serve gravitas. It doesn't always pan out, obviously, but the potential is there for Shelton on a given day to really bother someone with his serve. And today he meets a player who essentially says, "oh, that's cute."

Time for round two. Big Man tennis in the final of Basel.

These sort of conditions are perfect for him, quick conditions, no outdoor factors and best of three format, I think his mindset on serve differs slightly from what I've seen elsewhere, he really holds nothing back on 1st and 2nd serve and backs himself to hold no matter what, gets anywhere from 5-10 mph extra on both deliveries.

Not broken all week in Basel.

Too bad shelton is not backing up his 2023 quite as much as he could have. He hasnt lost his way like rune but seems less confident in the big matches.

Perricard (sounds a bit like Pierre Cardin) is a giant with some major upgrades. He is so athletic that he seems more like 6'4" than 6'8", moves around so well and looks very stable. However, the most impressive thing is his serve. I think it's even an upgrade on Isner's. He can easily clock it to 140 mph, but does it with great accuracy that some of his 2nd serves are well over 130mph. This guy could be impossible to beat on his day. Will be a legit challenger to Sincaraz soon, I think.

Alcaraz and Sinner are getting some good competition:

I dont think so tbh.

Although he is serving like Karlovic it doesnt equalize the way too bad returning stats. He needs to dramatically improve his returning stats to be a contender at Masters/Majors. A fast look on the ATP leaderboard for 2024 reveals 1st SPR win at 23% and 2nd SPR win at 38%. He wins about 10% of his return games which is classic servebot level (Karlovic was 9% Raonic 16% Isner 10%). No serving can make up for that bad return stats, its just the way it is. And yes, I checked Basel stats, which arent any better.

He's the new big guy of tennis. And a very welcome addition to the tour, this guy can be a threat to anyone.

Is he shaping up to be the new Giant Servebot of the tennis tour in the hallowed traditions of Ivanisevic, Karlovic, Isner and Anderson (Opelka seems to have got bored with the role)?

I watched him yesterday and very impressed, will be interesting to watch how well he does in the future.
Yah man, kid has the power, moves well and can hit an eye catching shbh. Like his demeanour too. All else being equal, it is reasonable to expect that he, like other youngsters, will improve. Hope so. It would be most interesting to have a good mix of excellent players competing for the top prizes.

He's not just a bot. He has good groundstrokes, great touch at the net and nice movement as well.

He has all the stats of a classic bot:
- Return games won around 10%
- Skyhigh Aces pr match
- Skyhigh DF's pr match
- 2nd serve win drops like a rock (relatively to other players) to 1st serve win.

no way is he a servebot. he is very athletic and has great hands.

People who call him that haven't watched him play.

That's actually a very good point so we should keep an eye on that stat over the next couple of years.
Yeah there is ofc no clear definition of a "Servebot", but there have been som good threads over the years. I think some good stats to define it is:

- Return games won around 10-15%
- Sky high Aces pr match
- Sky high DF's pr match
- 2nd serve win ranking considerably lower than 1st serve win ranking.

So far Perricard qualifies perfectly imo, but ofc that can change.

I agree with you except about the double faults. Isner didn't give away many points.

I think that return stat will improve. He's still pretty green yet.

Yeah dont know if Isner was a classic Servebot. Isner also had very good 2nd serve stats.
Oh my god

Now even Johny isner isn't servebot.

He would feel insulted.

I say even kyrgios is servebot. Ace rate above break rate is servebot to me.

Isner is far above the criteria. Top 2 servebot of all time.
