The 1970´s had the best ever football played in Germany.World and European Champions, the germans were off charts and along Holland brought the Total Football played at excellent technical and tactical levels to our tables.
Yes, Bayern was the 3 times European Champ but not the team that played better football. It was that fairy tale club placed at the very working class district of Rurh who blattantly did.Much like Forest later on, they simbolized the small village club (Moenchengladbach and Nottingham as opossed to München and Liverpool) revolution that left the world football followers pretty much breathless.
Consider that two of their starting players, Netzer ( 1973) and Simmonsen ( 1977) were considered the best European Players of the season. They were beaten by the referee at their 1971 European Champions semifinal and by the best ever Liverpool at the 1977 European Champions final.
But they won many national title and their rivalry with Bayern defined the Golden Era of German Football.
Weisweiler was their feld marschall, a tough guy coaching a team that, excepting its two danish wingers, Jensen and Simonsen, was 100% homemade. Two youngsters, Wittkamp and Del Haye were their key reserve players, while their legendary 11 Ponies englightened the football world like no other small town club had been able to do, with the exception of Pele´s Santos and Bochini´s Independiente de Avellaneda in South America.
Kleff,Vogts,Sielof,Stielike,Danner,Bonhof,Netzer,Wimmer,Jensen,Heynckes and Alan Simmonsen.6 of them, basics in the national team victories in the 72 European Nations Cup and, of course, the 1974 World Cup team.
A fairy tale in what turned to be the most spectacular decade of football, which started with Pele and ended up with Maradona...
