Glasgow -- what is good for?

I like Glasgow. A great northern British city with some excellent C19th architecture, true civic pride, good places to eat, excellent university and art galleries, and a rich history of invention and innovation. Some of Europe's greatest scenery lies close by.

It's where we produced Lord Andy of Murray.

Where, Dunblane or something? Is that near Glagow?

If you've never seen sectarian violence combined with football (soccer) violence, Glasgow is perfect for that.

Sign me up.

It's good for deep fried mars bars!!!!!!!

Sign me up for that too.

What is C19th architecture?

Some of Europe's greatest scenery lies close by.

Now we're talking. What is it, where is it, how far is it, how do I get there, etc? Got 72 hours in Glasgow, but I've never been to Scotland before and I'd love to see more than just C19th architecture and soccer fans throwing deep fried mars bars at each other.

The responses in the thread are getting weirder and weirder. Mods, do something!

Also, for the UK resident here: I will have my 13 year old daughter with me. Is she allowed to hang out with me in the pubs or otherwise hit the town with me? No,I dont want her drinking in the pubs (even her dad won't be doing much of that) but I do want us to get the full Scottish experience, and it would be a shame to make her wait outside while I hoist one with the locals.:)

If anyone is a single dad here, traveling with one's child can be a great fun, but they are big time C-blockers just for logistical reasons, so I won't be enjoying the fine ladies of Scotland on this trip. (Are there any fine ladies of Scotland?)

It is my belief that children are usually always welcome in pubs. She can have juice or a soft drink. Pubs are always a great place to meet the locals and they'll be just as interested in you as you are in them! Have fun!

Great curries, good pubs although becoming too corporate chain heavy and home to the one and only Partick Thistle football team.

Been there, it isn't anything special. Then again I was drunk for 95% of the time when I went there as I traveled through Europe in college. If it is just you and your daughter, I'd go elsewhere in Europe.

Sounds good. Thanks!

On behalf of all Weegies.....Thanks lads. :p
Glasgow's alright, best night out in scotland-you can e-mail me if you want to know anything about Glasgow/Dundee/aberdeen

I appreciate it. I am very interested in seeing some of the famous Scotland scenery if it's close enough as the other poster indicated.

Very interested in this thread.... Say more about Glasgow please, good and/or bad.

I like this post.:)

If it is just you and your daughter, I'd go elsewhere in Europe.

As one might guess from the context, elsewhere in Europe is not an option. It's not like I chose it over Paris, Rome, Amsterdam, London, etc. "Forget Venice -- I want my daughter to see Glasgow, Scotland!"

OP,
my friend visited it during Christmas and she had a wonderful time though yeah too much drinking. But I'm sure you will find plenty of things to do with your daughter there that won't involve any alcohol. And yes in most of Europe children can come in,though not drink alcohol(under 14-16 at least).

Glasgow gave the world Belle and Sebastian.

And, as it turns out, Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits. Literally five minutes after I posted last in this thread, I turned on my TV to the music station and the second song that came on had him singing a song that mentioned Glasgow and the bio on-screen said he hailed from there.

Coincidence? I think so!

Whichever you prefer. I'm happy to learn about Glasgow, Montana as well. Even Hannah, Montana.

Awright, least ya haggis-eating, sheep-humping blokes get yer kilts all twisted up in knots:
A Greek and a Scotsman were sitting in Glascow, Montana arguing and boasting about which had the greater culture. The Greek said: "We Greeks invented Astronomy" to which the Scot replied: "We Scots invented the Winter and Summer Solstice." The Greek then said: "We Greeks invented advanced mathematics" while the Scot declared: "We Scots invented the calendar and the world's first timepieces." This went on back and forth, until the Greek decided to throw a "fact" into the mix thinking that this will put an end to the discussion altogether in his favor.

So with a flourish of finality the Greek proudly boasted: "It was the GREEKS that invented sex!"

.... The Scot smiled and said "Aye, but it was the SCOTS that introduced it to the women."

Alex Harvey, The Barrowlands and deep fried Mars bars

I really hate to ruin this for everybody....but we don't really eat these...Ever.

I've certainly never had one, and I could count the number of people I know who have on one hand.

According to a friend, deep fried Mars bars are a speciality of Motherwell rather than Glasgow. But he is from Glasgow.

Yes, you do.

So Jonnyf or others: it seems like Loch Ness and Aberdeen and Inverness are all a couple of hours from Glasgow, and probably too far for us. Is there any of the famous Highland type Scottish scenery within an hour or less of Glasgow? Or maybe the coast?

Em, you can certainly see some costal areas- Troon for example, or scenic areas-pretty much anywhere..within an hour or 2 of Glasgow, where would you be flying to...Glasgow airport or prestwick? If it's prestwick..then you're actually on the coast at troon already.

You should try find your way to the uber gray city where I currently preside...it's amazing :|
Denial. Just denial.

Damn, you've caught me. I'm just going to go get a deep fried mars bar, some ginger and a bucky.

We haven't touched on bucky. It seems almost a shame, particularly as Rab C. hisself has featured in this thread.

What is your city?

I will be flying into Glasgow. So what specific gorgeous scenery or pretty coastal town is within one hour of Glasgow? What is best of the best that is close by?

You can get to Dundee by bus from Glasgow. And that's a good thing.

What's good about it?

I'm glaswegian..I'm from glasgow..Lived there for 18 years but as of September 09, I spend a lot of time in Aberdeen, where I go to Uni.

It's hard to say, there's Troon for the beach, that's under an hours drive. there's also scenery everywhere. I'm useless at explaining these things though!
