Loving the comments in this thread. I happen to agree with Goffin. Just because you can get away with gamesmanship, doesn't mean you should.
On the other hand, when you play professional tennis, I guess anything goes as long as the officials don't/can't stop it. So they are creating an atmosphere where gamesmanship is rewarded. As such, everyone ought to engage in as much gamesmanship as they possibly can and put the onus on the officials to punish them. Absent any real punishment (which is not likely), ANYTHING you can do to disrupt your opponent, you ought to do.
Think about it, if you are a complete horses ass in every way possible AND it disrupts your opponent, then your tactics are successful and you ought to do them. If I were Goffin's coach, I'd advise him to start being a complete and utter ***** to all the other players during a match. Zverev is mentally weak, so you wouldn't need to do much to set him off and win by gamesmanship. This is exactly what Goffin (and everyone else) ought to be doing until the ATP puts a stop to it (which they won't, as has been proven over and over).
As TT proves, what the fans like is a winner. Doesn't matter in some respects how you win, just so you do. And when your opponent complains about the way you won (gamesmanship and just being a dick), it's just seen as sour grapes.
Gilbert's book should be renamed from "Winning Ugly" to "How to be a complete and utter dick and win tennis matches", because that's what it's really about.
