Goffin slams Zverev: "He doesn't care a bit about others"

Some of these responses make me sick. A whole bunch of “who is Goffin” and “sour grapes” and “He’s just jealous cuz daddy Zverev is better than him and younger”. You’ve missed the point, completely.

This isn’t about who’s the better player or who’s got the better success, this is about respecting your opponents. I for one find Zverev’s gamesmanship disrespectful to the other player. He needs to start shaping up, or else we have another Kyrgios on our hands.

To be quite honest, I think it's time people let that one go as well. At least a bit. I know you were joking, but some others keep harping on it over and over. They still want his head on a spike for that.

I've forgiven Shapo for it. Only bring it up to illustrate that known of our favorites are perfect, yes they're sublime athletes but they're still people, not super heroes. And while their opinions are of course more educated than our own on all things tennis, even they can say some things they regret. I honestly think Goffin will regret this little rant he went on as weeks go by.

Some of the people that hate Zverev like Kyrgios though. Look, I'll admit the "what has Goffin done" comment I made was a bit much, but the hypocrisy is still there none the less.

Tennis is rife with gamesmanship, even the beloved Federer and Nadal do their fair share of it.

Mirka was indeed pretty cute in her younger years, although you can’t say the same thing about her now and mean it.

Well, no, I agree. She's not cute now, but she's still looking good for someone who's had 4 kids IMO. Some people however, go way over the line just because she's Federer's wife which I'm sure you know.

I hope he doesn't regret it. I like some controversy. :D

Hating Z is hypocrisy I know. I have known since the starting. I don't want to end up hating someone. It is sad. I will try to like him. And that too before RG. It is so sad that I had to root for Fedr to lose the number 1. All this because of hate :(:(

I don’t find her attractive at all now tbh. Once she lost that cuteness of hers, she became completely unattractive IMO. And I’m not even talking about her weight, that’s understandable after having four kids. I think her features aren’t very feminine, she has a pretty strict, unsympathetic look to her and it doesn’t look like she cares about fashion or make-up and all that stuff that much. Don’t want to be too negative, I’m certain she’s a great woman and Roger seems to be very lucky to have her. She does a great job at being a wife of a tennis player this famous. It’s a shame she doesn’t give any interviews.

Fair enough.

Truer words have never been written.

I don’t like Zverev either and like the memes about him, but honestly I agree some of the things he gets hated for are trivial and sometimes it’s just pure hypocrisy. This thread for example gives the impression people try to find dirt on him every chance they get.

But I dig the memes

That's really all I meant to say initially. I could have/ should have done it without denigrating Goffin. I just knew though that it was because it was against Zverev that it'd be eaten up.

I’m just goofing around, I don’t like the kid at all and I would literally root for anyone but Zverev but it’s not real hatred.

It’s hatred in the context of the sport.

And I'm saying the relevance of what he says is inherently sullied by the fact that he was beaten, he wasn't in a position to whine, in my opinion.

This is undoubtedly true and a good point. But think back when many other great players were young. When Sampras, Borg, Fed or Rafa were first coming into their own, there was nobody who was slamming them from the pro ranks. Nobody was saying "they don't care about others." Sure, with Nastase or Connors you heard that, but those were different types of guys and both were viscerally nasty from the very beginning.

Goffin probably will never win a slam, but he's a decent, quiet, soft spoken guy who is well behaved, well mannered and a gentleman on court. He has no history of slamming other players at all. He has personal experience with Zverev and slammed him. This is a big deal and relevant, whether Z's fans want to believe it or not. For a quiet, gentle guy like Goffin to rip Zverev a new one speaks volumes about him and what the top guys think about him in the locker room. And yeah, David Goffin is a "top guy" based on his ranking, whether you want to give him that credit or not.

You took me seriously and stopped the agreeing :(

Well said, good point. I fully admit I was wrong in denigrating Goffin. In that moment I was what being what I was complaining about. So we all are not immune to being hypocritical from time to time.

I think it is a generational thing with Zverev. Common decency seems to be sorely lacking nowadays. And before anyone wants to say I sound like an old man, I am only 25 :P.

I think our generation has a lot to learn about respect.

Goffin whined on Zs time tactics, something which Nadal and djoko fans (like 50% of this forum) have no problem about.

I think Zverev should be given time to grow up too though. 21 year old me versus me now is A LOT different. Zverev will have his own set of challenges I did not - being famous - being rich - but the capacity to grow in 3-4 yrs is enormous. Especially at his age.

Wow, this thread went off the rails fast. I don’t particularly enjoy watching Goffin play, but I have a tremendous amount of respect for what he has accomplished in a game currently dominated by people with different builds.

What I find interesting about this, though, is everybody seems to dislike how players just go on auto pilot so much of the time when speaking with the press. Here is a guy making an authentic, genuine comment about a fellow player that is critical. I respect him for speaking his mind and not just giving us the the meaningless blather we typically get.

TTW seems to fluctuate on how much they want a player to be politically correct versus how much they want a guy to be genuine.

Me personally? I want them to be genuine. I think Goffin could have picked a better time to air his grievances though.
