Goffin spots difference: "Against Novak you never feel comfortable, against Roger you feel like recieving winners"

After his match against Djokovic in Tokyo, David had some insights on 2 players:
“He puts pressure on every point. He’s returning everything very long, just next to the baseline,” Goffin explained.
“And then during the point he puts pressure. He takes the ball early, he makes you run a lot, so you never feel comfortable when you play against him because he’s always playing really fast and really precise all the time.
“It’s not like playing Roger when you feel like you receive winners all the time.
“But when it’s Novak, you have the feeling that it’s very solid.
“He doesn’t miss, he doesn’t give anything. [His shots are] long and he’s moving so well, so it’s tough to find a solution because you’re always in a bad position to play a shot. So that’s why it’s not easy to play against him.”

Cool guy Goffin is and I think he kind of sums it up. Roger will go for it on the first shot and Djokovic will suffocate you and then go for his shot. Two different styles really.

So RF is more impatient and less merciless, Novak is more patient and more merciless.

Very good description from Goffin. Kind of sums up the Djokovic game. The depth is the critical thing that Goffin brings up.

It's pretty much constant controlled aggression, every shot hit with intention.

It enables him to be offensive the whole time, with a slightly better margin for error than all-out attack.

Novak hits 30 shot rallies without ever actually hitting a standard rally ball, everything is a bit heavier, or deeper in the court. There aren't many players with the stroke mechanics to go with Djokovic. Goffin comes close, but suffers from the power deficit he has with Djokovic unfortunately.

Very frustrating I am sure. You hit an offensive shot that should be a winner or an easy shot coming back, but he sails one back to the baseline and basically makes you reconstruct the point from there. I dont understand how he controls his defense so well with depth.

Goffin could make a good coach someday. Reminds me of Simon in that regard.
I remember Simon making similar comments about the top guys a while back, they echo Goffin's thoughts.

'It's destabilizing how he is able to make that kind of shots hitting early the ball - said about Federer - The beginning of the match is complicated because he is faster than you. He plays like he doesn't find it difficult.

It's always difficult to find the rhythm against him. When you succeed to do it it's easier but he remains an incredible player. Djokovic? I think he is not underestimated, he is a very consistent playing less spectacular shots. I never saw someone who was so good on the return. He returns easily against guys like Raonic, Isner and at that time Roddick, even if he does not make your head swim like Roger does

Djoker has to be the more frustrating player to play but you still feel in the match as it does not look dominating. While when Fed is on, you really feel up against it and things move to fast, but you don't have to work as hard to beat him.

Different levels needed to beat both guys, but I would think most players would rather see a Fed in their draw and hope to play at their peak level. As with Djoker, you have to play peak level, but more consistently each point as you may need not just 1-2 winners, but 4-5.

Do OP’s positives as a poster outweigh the negatives?
Now that is some huge lack of creativity.

Could you imagine the FedFosterWallace go low and attack OP directly without going around saying gibberish stuff like he usually does ? Almost as he is really annoyed with OP  Hope he isn't

He told me he has a huge crush on you. He is trying to get your attention this way. :)

Sounds like how Tom Okker described the difference between playing Laver and Rosewall. Laver hit either winners or near winners, Rosewall's shots were usually returnable though you were usually out of position and your returns were put away by Ken at the net. Therefore, when you played Ken you did a lot more running, whether you won or lost.

I think Goffin said that Roger's shots seem like they are served on a plate for Goffin to make a winner. Why can't he capitalize on them is another question.

I'm pretty sure that's not what he meant.

He made distinction between Novak and Roger, if he said that Rogers makes winners all the time (just somehow David is able to get them) where is the difference what Novak and Roger do ?

It sure doesn't sound like he is saying that "Roger's shots are served on a platter for me to hit winners".
More like Fed is just more aggressive.

So Goffin doesn't mind that Federer is blasting winners past him because he knows he's a worthy winner. Doesn't think the same of Djokovic who has to grind for a win.
Grinding his way all the way to breaking most records...

And you have first-row seats in front your TV to witness it all. Aren't you privileged?
