Going from 97sq in 18x20 to 98sq in 16x20, tension?

Why don’t you try using the Stringway Online Tension advisor? First measure the dimensions of your frame. Then find out what the DT is for the tension that most closely matches the suggested tension. This will require some work because the TA only works in 3 point DT ranges but you can get a rough idea. Then get your tension for the 16x19 from the DT you use now for the 18x20

Because the difference in head size between the 97 and 98 frame will be minimal you will probably find the cross tension does not change only the main tension. Therefore, the only tension you need to look at is the main tension. I’m guessing your tension on the 16x19 will go up about 8 lbs to 56.5/46.5 but I’d use the TA with speficic racket measurements to get the suggested tensions.

I'd just string the new one.... same tension as old and go from there.

But as @Irvin said, you could expect to go up 8 or so lbs. I know I would

Ive demoed and used alot of different racquets over the years..... Everytime I get a different one or brand and I go to string it......I mount it on the stringer....

My brain almost runs like some sort of diagnostic scan.....
reminding me of how I play....
how my old racquet played....
difference in stiffness.....
the string I'm using or going to use....
I stare at the racquet.... processing.... processing....... .................. determining correct tension............ processing....

Boom.........I come up with my number.

Works Everytime for me.

Hummm? But if it works that’s great.

@kabrac, just ignore, the mires of mediocrity never appreciate true genius!
No Doubt! The human brain, if exercised by its user in the right way, is the most powerful computer........Ever. And it's been said we as humans only tap into only 10% or so of its true power. In some, I absolutely believe they are only using 10% and less haha

That is true but the chance of getting the same DT is slim.

Who the F cares about "dt". When I pat my palm on my racquet, and hit a few balls, I'm not thinking about "dt"....More or less my fingers send a signal up to my brain that says "Damn Straight!"

Booyah!

Don't get mad, get better...

@kabrac, it is clear from the above that one of you likes to play tennis and one likes to talk about playing tennis. :) In fact, one of you likes to talk.....talk....and talk....

I have read, and respect @Irvin contributions, videos, etc, etc. But he has his way(works for him). And I have mine(works for me).

@Irvin no disrespect. Just if I get jabbed at, I'll jab back. I can go toe to toe.

The head pro was talking to me between his lessons one time while I was stringing my racquet. He kept saying things like, "why are you doing it that way?!"." That's not how you tie a knot"....... Finally, I had to say, " look, this is the way I do it, this is my racquet, I'm the one stringing it." And I put my left arm out when he tried to take over. He walked away...

Nothing wrong with that but I'm not sure what you mean by being jabbed at. But thinking about how the racket hits and coming up with a number if not something everyone will be able to do. As a matter of fact it is sort of like, "Why are you doing it that way?"

@Irvin you are textbook, I go with my instinct and what my gut tells me. We both get to the same place, just a different way.

My usual method that is not proved correct by ert 300 /rdc
Kg for mains
98/97 = 1.01
1.01 x18 /16 = 1.136
22kg x 1.136 = 25kg

Kg for crosses
98/97 =1.01
1.01x20/20 = 1.01
21kg x 1.01=21.2kg

Lbs for mains
98/97 = 1.01
1.01 x18 /16 = 1.136
48.5x 1.136 =55.0lbs

Lbs for crosses
98/97 =1.01
1.01x20/20 =1.01
46.5 x 1.01= 46.965 =47(approximately)

Although I don't reccomend 8 lbs differential (just don't reccomend, personal preference)

I don't like that too. But I will explain to them. Most stringers in my country give birth to starting knots( tightened by machine) are harming to grommets, regardless the tension.

I don't care for starting knots either...

@Christoforos Giatzakis
i came up with simple rule of thumb "for myself", when stringing different patterns
i like it, and it FEELS good "2ME",

on a FB (full bed), string job only,
on a 16/19 and/or 18/20 pattern, 2lbs difference, example 50/48 lbs
on a 16/20 pattern, 3lbs difference, example 50/47 lbs

this "tension difference", topic is a can of worms that has soo many sides of input from alot of people on this board (all VALID and based on circumstance), as they test and find what "they" like/preffer,

@Christoforos Giatzakis, after all this explanation, were you also planning to change the gauge of your string or leave them the same? 17 or 18 Ga will last reasonably well in an 18x20, but is terrible in a 16x20.
Well, I first tried multifeel 17/ghost wire 19 in the 16x20 but the mains lasted 2.5 hours... same setup lasts over 8-10 hours in the 18x20. I guess I have to go thicker for the mains in the 16x20...

I finally kept the crosses tension the same (21kg) and used 23.5kg for the mains in the 16x20 following tension advisor's recommendation... I have to say the overall stringbed stiffness felt pretty close to the 18x20 at 22/21 kg.

Unless the racket width changed very much the TA probably would have been the same on the crosses.
