Golf Club Help!

I started playing golf about 3 months ago and not trying to sound full of myself but I've practiced really hard and gotten pretty good. My best score over nine was 51 which I know isn't great but I'm proud of it and it is probably good enough to get my on my schools golf team. Anyways, the clubs I'm using are a really old set of wilsons that my friend say he got for 100 bucks a long time ago plus a Ping G5 6-Iron my coach gave me. I know almost NOTHING about clubs but from what I have heard the G5 irons are "game improvement" irons and I shouldn't be using them but the one I have feels pretty nice, especially compared to my wilsons. I'm looking to buy a whole new set but first I need to know what to keep in my bag. I suck with fairway woods so I was thinking about some sort of hybrid. So would something like this be good to have in my bag? Driver, 2 Hybrids, 3-9 Irons, Sand Wedge, Pitching Wedge, and Putter?
I also need a recommendation of what clubs I should buy for all of these. I know thats a lot to ask but whatever you feel like contributing is greatly appreciated. Thanks

I'm not good with fairway woods either, i'm a 12 handicap and fairway woods off both the tee and the deck are the worse part of my game.

What I suggest you try is Callaway Steelhead III fairways woods. They are about 5+ years old now and you can pick them up from eb@y for silly money. I got my 3 wood for £17 (roughly $35) a year ago so even if you don't like it.. it's worth trying.

As for irons. I used game improvement ones for a while but they were just too big and clunky and I couldn't shape the ball so I traded them in for some blades and my iron play went to a whole new level.

Isn't there a pro shop you could go to where you could hit with some demo's on the range? Try a blade and you'll realise they are alot easier than you'd image.. they also grow with you as a player so you won't need a new set everytime you get that little bit better.

15 handicapper improving with blades...
Hmmmm nice one

My friend is a single digit, and he doesn't even play with full blades. He tried some MP-67 blades during one of our high school matches and afterwards I asked him about how they played, he said that they felt buttery smooth, but his swing had to be ON to excute the shots he wanted ie: fades, draws, low cuts and others.

So 51 in nine holes...hahahaha stick to your game improvement G5

First of all... it's 12, not 15.

Blades are easy to hit! MP-67's are some of the easiest blades out there.. the ball flight is so high on them, Titleist blades fire the ball in at a much better trajectory.

I pick the ball off the turf and blades do that nicely, the thick soles of game improvement irons actually made it more difficult for me.

I have 695mb's at the moment and when I demo'd them and the 695cb's.. the mb's were actually easier to hit and i've heard quite a few people saying similar.

I find it quite interesting your friend tried a set for ONE round and wasn't impressed when he realised he had to swing properly to get good results, that was one of the main reasons I traded in my MX-23's for my first set of blades 5 years ago.. trust your swing and you will be handsomely rewarded, i'd much rather be doing that than have a club correcting the errors in my swing.

The Mp-67's are easier to hit than other blades on the market, but nevertheless blades.
So unless your game is rock solid, i dont think someone with a 15 handicap or some kid who shoots a 51 on a nine could use it to its full potential
My friend could it with it fairly well but its nothing compared to what he does with his R7 TP
Plus Golf Digest even said that ONLY 10% of the top 20 golfers in the world use true blades so maybe you should rethink your choice of irons before your game collapses and you have to go and beg for money to get some new clubs THREAD CLOSED

JOCK ON YOU MANNNN

if u 'suck' with fairway woods why not try practising at a driving range before u give up on them. and have u actually hit with a hybrid before... it's not going to be an instant fix!

I was down to a 3 handicap before injuries, burnout, and house construction. The Ping G5 irons would be great for you right now. The poster above talking about blades is not going to help you enjoy the game. You have to ask yourself...what do i want out of golf? Do I want to commit at least 4 days/evenings a week (a couple of hours on full swing, pitches) and the at least an hour to putting ans chipping to practice along with some rounds thrown in there also? Do I want to play once a week and not dedicate a ton of time to practice?

If you want to commit the time to golf and get down to low single digit...shooting around par...then work your way down to blades. Stick with the G5 right now then when you are consistent in the 42-45 range get some players cavity back. When you get in the consistent 38-42 range get some blades and see if they can get you into better scores. There are tons of scratch and better golfers out there that still use Ping Eye2 irons and they are very forgiving cavity backs that go back to the mid 80's. They are classic kind of like the POG.

Concerning fairway woods and hybrids: I have never been too fond of hybrids but they do help a ton of people. it took me a long time to settle down on a 3 wood but once I found the right one it worked. Fairway woods in my opinion are the easiest to hit. Hybrids next and then long irons to the majority of the golfers.

Keep using the g5 as they are a fine iron. You can not buy a better game...just like tennis. You have to dig it out of the dirt. Before you purchase any equipment you should always test it first.

Good luck with golf. Do not get wrapped up in having to have the newest and prettiest. They do not always help. If you really want to improve your game quickly spend a ton of time putting...try to get all putts within a 2 foot circle...do a clock drill from 6 feet out...do a ladder drill at 3 feet, 6 feet, and 9 feet. Putting and short game will lead to lower scores faster!

If you're willing to work on your game by practicing 3-4 times a week, and think you have the skills to be a good golfer, I would suggest buying some sort of players cavity back irons. Drop the 3 and 4 iron and replace them with two hybrids - 21° and 25° loft. Learn to hit your 3 wood & driver off the tee (practice practice practice) and maybe get a hybrid instead of a 5 wood (17° or 18° lofted hybrid). The buy a set of irons from 5-PW, add a good 53° combined gap/sand wedge and maybe a 58° or 60° lob wedge and you have a great bag right there.

If you're serious about your game and want something in between blades and big Game improvement irons, irons to consider could be: Taylor Made R7 Tp's (very easy to hit, even though they are called Tp's - I own a set of these myself) , Mizuno Mp-52's, Callaway X-22 Tour, Titleist Ap1 (on the big GI side) or Ap2's - just to name some. If you like a very big Game Improvement like iron, then stick with your Ping G5's or buy the new Callaway FT Fusion irons (not the old model, it's too big). It all depends on what you like and how you feel standing over them. Most important is practice and taking some lessons and discuss with your coach what to buy and not listening to advice on a tennis board.

I would suggest you visit a real golf board - www.golfwrx.com
We will give you proper advice in there - most of us in there are golf experts and sick club Ho's and we know our stuff into last detail :D

i used to play professional golf so hopefully i can give you some good advice.

go with something game improvement for sure. plenty of pros play w/ cavity backs and some play w/ game improvement irons. all the ping g -series are good (g2, g5, g10) if you want a deal get a used set of g5's w/ the same setup (shaft, etc) as the one you have since you like it. or better yet go to your local golf shop (nevada bob's, golf galaxy, edwin watts, etc) or golf course and take some different clubs and hit them (outside for sure, you cant tell anything hitting them into the net inside). do the same for the drivers and hybrids - if you dont like fwy woods then dont waste your time finding one you like. as for the set up driver, at least 2 hybrids (3 would be better) then 4 or 5 iron - pw, sw and lw - then find a putter you like and you are good to go. then practice with them and dont think about changing till you get down to a solid 10 hcp or so.

best of luck!

Ahhhh....sorry - i thought the jk was a signature of yours or something like that and I had done something in the past to **** you off, that I didn't know about....

Great that I was wrong - and nice to see some guys from GolfWRX around here on Tennis Talk too :D

Then all is it good - I'm going golfing 18 holes this morning (just received new irons and wedges yesterday) and will play tennis indoor tonight with 2 of my new Babolat PST's with a new hybrid of VS Gut 16 gauge mains and Luxilon ALU BB Fluoro Crosses, so it will be a great day for me for sure

I wish you a great day too :D

Fena, 12 mate, pretty impressive. I don't play much but hit about 25 over...hehe. My mum plays off usually scratch, sometimes 1 ;). She was tied with Karrie Webb one day of the Aussie Open a few years back, but missed cut second day...haha.

Serious? haha.

Suppose it'll make a good story for the Grandkids :)

You can also get some custom made clubs from private vendors. Most are usually guys who build clubs at home. It's a fact that a top quality graphite shaft costs about $12. There are websites that allow you to select your shaft and head etc. Look into it. It can save a ton of money.

It's cool that you play golf though. Most people (ignorant peoeple) that don't play it don't realize what a great sport it really is.

alcap and jamc are right on the money. I'm an 8 myself and if you're just starting out, get the set from Costco. Since you'll be changing swing, speed, ball striking...etc. Might as well start with a solid game improving set. No matter what you get now, if you keep it up, it will not fit you in a year or two. A set from used bin at local golf shop could be an option too.

Spend the money on putter though. Get fitted to the right length. This club should be your soulmate for life... sleep with it if you have to.
