Gone but not forgotten

Classic strokes
Conners Converse tennis shoes
Tennis shorts with a 5" inseam
The mail order ads for tennis shops in the tennis mags
Chrissy vs Martina
Gene Mayer's two handed shots off BOTH sides
Edburg's kick 2nd serve
5 set no tie-break matches
Conners' night matches @ the US Open
Bud Collins telling the Ashe/Noah story
Billie Jean kicking Riggs' butt in the Battle of the sexes match
When grunting during play for every shot was non-existent
Wearing a vest over your polo when it was 40-65 degrees

Golf is still hanging onto the vest - why it disappeared from tennis?
That is an easy question, the adoption of technical fabrics from mountaineering and backpacking. Why would you wear a vest that becomes heavy with moisture when you can have a warm garment that regulates heat and moisture that is lightweight to boot?

I draw the line with the 5" shorts. No way

As a kid of the 90’s and early 00’s, I can’t stand short shorts. Modern shorts are too short and I can’t wait for them to hopefully trend longer a bit. I like a happy medium of a short that ends just above the knees. Not below, and not halfway up my thigh.

Lovely leather grips:

I think you can still get decent quality leather grips. But black leather seems to be a thing of the past for sure.

True, Fairways and Kimoni are quite good still. I wish Balmforth would hook-up with the big manufacturers and offer some new gold-embossed versions. I'm sure they would sell.

Modern shorts are still too long.
Dude totally .. tennis just looks more balanced as a total aesthetic when the shorts are at least an inch, preferably more above the knee , at the very least . I’m short so for me it’s different, but it’s hard to find shorts that even don’t hang past my knees .
It sucks being short y’all the struggles real …

Gotta go s/xs and look for Nike running shorts that will allow hips to flex

I just looked back at post #94, with the 1982 shoes, on my laptop, since I couldn't read the details on my phone. Adidas Grand Prix, $45 US!

Agree - yes. I just wear my golf vests to play tennis when needed.

Not too short though or people in some circles in USA, GB, or France will call you the most derogatory gay names in their world. They already do it to some runners who wear smaller shorts, or the really tight compression ones mainly worn for either weather being colder in the 45--50 F/7--9 C or specific runs like track/speed work or some long run chafing.

I miss when clothing companies had their logos either embroidered on or had patches that were sewn on. The heat transfer logos just aren't the same.

I especially loved when they would get all wet and sweaty and chafe the left nipple

Or when the stitching poked through, good times

5-7" is fine. No shorter. I have one pair of 4" and that's actually OK. They are white so looks very old school. I always wear compression shorts underneath

The chafing on the nipple or on the chest was not great. Still better then that period in the early to mid 2010's where some tech shirt models had these seams all on them to have the tech shirt more form fitting that caused chafing. The tech shirts from mid 2010's to now 2025 tend to be using some stretch to give a form fitting look without being full on compression. For some reason in this same period of early to mid 2010's nearly all sports compression undies unless expensive or types made for a cup to be worn just between two layers of fabric had this seam ether in the back or down the front where they caused chafing where you wanted the seam in the way back preferably and as flat seam for this single seam because all the other seams were flat on most except these ones, the seam being big issue if a male. It was not until 2015--2016 or so that the compression undies were more normal like they were in 2007 or 2008 with better ergonomics for lower end models.

Yes, for all but one brand left making a Black leather grip I want to say that is the same brand __ that also making grip for Gamma. However, the printed-on grip or embossed grips are a thing of the past on all leather and even most vinyl base grips that come with the model.

In Europe there is a paddle mania ATM. Pickle is not even known by the mass.
Still better then Brazil where Beach Tennis is the one winning that uses the boring one man Beach volleyball court dimensions/net height or Japan where Soft Tennis and Badminton are the top Net full court sports using a Paddle or racquet.

Paddle not to be confused with Paddle Ball, those are two different sports as Padel Ball is an outdoor inner-city version of Raquetball/Squash with a ball that is so hard like a slightly lager handball I wonder if players should be wearing Palota helmets like how some pro handball players do seeing how fast the Pro game of Paddle Ball is played while the other Paddel is closer to if Tennis or Pickleball.
