Good news for Canadian tennis >>>

Raonic in Halle

Milos Raonic is back in action, in Halle, as (8th) seed.

1st round:
A good win,
63 61 against Andujar, a good player (#48th), but not a grass-courter.

Let's hope he gets far in the tourney.

Rebecca Marino at #45

As a result of her good results at RG, Rebecca is at her highest ranking, #45.

She already won her first set on grass, at Birmingham:

Fin. R. Marino 6 6
M. South 4 1

against a pretty tough opponent.

Go, Rebecca!

Raonic in Halle QFs!!

6AM EST tomorrow on streaming, no doubt

ORDER OF PLAY - FRIDAY, 10 JUNE, 2011

CENTER COURT start 12:00 noon
[8] M Raonic (CAN) vs P Petzschner (GER)

Raonic in the Halle doubles F

Very good performance, they lost a tight final to the 6th doubles in the world:

Gerry Weber Open, Halle Men's Doubles

Fin. R. Bopanna
A-U-H. Qureshi 7 3 11

R. Haase
M. Raonic 6 6 9

Good practice for grass :-)

Raonic at Wimbledon

Tomorrow at 7AM EST, court 14 at Wimbledon:

Gentlemen's Singles - 1st Round
Fabio Fognini(ITA) vs. Milos Raonic(CAN)[31]

I don't think it will be shown on streaming (livescorehunter seems to show only courts: Center, 1, 2, 3, 12, 18 , which is a lot anyway). Perhaps sportsnet.ca, not sure.
We'll see.

Very tough match, Fognini is better at returning and a good fighter.

Go, Milos!

Three Canadian Ladies in the main draw at Wimbledon

We have three Canadian young ladies in the main draw at Big W:

Rebecca Marino
Aleksandra Wozniak
Stephanie Dubois

Go get them, ladies!

Huge disappointment with Raonic having to retire.

Dubois is the lone Canadian left, shown now on livescorehunter with Petkovic

Raonic injured, retires from match

--
Raonic, the 31st seed, saw the trainer during the break and called it quits while leading the set 3-2. He spent just 23 minutes on court.

"I had already slipped twice, even if it wasn't that bad right away, it could have gotten worse," said Raonic regarding the decision to retire from the match. "I haven't had too many injuries, so I can't really tell, I don't know my body that well. I'm really in the dark."

Raonic was also not sure about the severity of his injury.

"I don't know anything, On my way to get an MRI," said Raonic. "It's too soon for a diagnosis on what it is. But it's something pretty deep in the hip. It's around both the inside and outside of the hip. A minor pull on the inside, but on the outside, it's regarding the joint."

Where are Bester and Polansky?

Where are Bester and Polansky in the Montreal draw?

Bester qualified Canada in the latest Davis Cup.
He's not even in Qs.
Nor is Polansky.

Yes. Bester got a one initially, then had to give up at the end. Gulbis took it.
Polansky "Groin still bugging a bit, wont be playing Vancouver. Sucks!! : ("

There was disharmony between Dancevic & Tennis Canada. TC turned down his MD WC request, he decided not to play qualifying.

Thanks ...

It is a shame what Tennis Canada did to Dancevic.
He's the #2 Canadian on the computer, in the end.

Eric Chvojka (from Montreal) in Rogers Cup

Eric Chvojka (from Montreal) plays quite well with Dolgopolov.
Shows some good S-V.
A talented guy, leftie, great serve.
Dolgo was barely able to beat him.
Chvojka defended very well against BPs.

Foot faulted 3 times by the Can linespeople :-[

And stolen a baseline point :-[ (clear on Hawkeye)

What country are these people from?

Come on, Eric! Let's get lower in those rankings!

Raonic is going to commentate (is that a verb?) on Wednesday and Thursday for sportsnet. This info was on rthe sporrtsne.ca site.

Eric Chvojka

A good article about Eric Chvojka (in French).

http://www.rds.ca/intercanada/chroniques/324342.html

I didn't know he was accepted in Engineering at McGill University here in Montreal (a prestigious place) and that he has decided to come back to tennis.

I've always considered him a very talented player, but I felt disappointed that he seems to have given up at times on his S-V game, which he showcased as a junior. Leftie + S-V, this can be deadly for many opponents, and Dolgopolov got a taste of it yesterday.

We should wish him good luck in getting higher ranked.
Let's hope Tennis Canada will help in terms of financing for his traveling to tournaments and so forth. He needs better exposure to higher ranked players.

The future of Canadian tennis looks much brighter than it did a few years ago. Milos Roanic and Rebecca Marino are the main stars, but there's also Vasek Pospisil (I know him. He dominated the Tennis BC Junior curcuit on which I played as well) and Alexsandra Wozniak.

Unlike Tennis Canada, Tennis BC is a great program. Look for most of the Canadian talent to come from British Columbia in the coming years.

Does anyone know what caused the rift b/w Dancevic & TC? I was surprised to hear about the wildcard as well, differences aside he does have Canada's #2 ranking.

Canada Israel Davis Cup

Shown now on livescorehunter.com LIVE:-)

Sela Pospisil now
Weintraub Raonic after that

Great victory for Pospisil in DC!!

RAMAT HASHARON, ISRAEL: Vasek Pospisil overcame Israeli No. 1 Dudi Sela in five tight sets to put Canada in the driving seat after the first rubber in Ramat Hasharon. It took the Canadian four minutes short of five hours to upset the home crowd in the 76(4) 67(6) 61 67(2) 63 victory.

Yup Poppy was amazing today.....Israeli put up a great amout of resistance. Happy to see Canada back into the world group and hoping they stay there!

Like last year, Nadal in the 2nd:-)

Let's have him first get there.

He got a break with his WC opponent in the first round so he should get to the second but that's as far as he'll go I fear. Even when he was healthy and on his roll it would have been a stretch for Milos to beat Rafa so I'm not expecting him to in this situation. Hope he plays well though and starts to get some feel and timing for competitive tennis back.

TUESDAY, 4 OCTOBER, 2011

CENTRE COURT start 12:00 noon
M Raonic (CAN) vs [WC] Y Sugita (JPN)
D Nalbandian (ARG) vs L Rosol (CZE)
K Nishikori (JPN) vs [3] D Ferrer (ESP)
[1] R Nadal (ESP) vs [WC] G Soeda (JPN)

Tough match, the guy beat Devvarman in straights in DC.

why do i get this nagging feeling that raonic's hip injury could be permanent and shorten his career? kind of like kuerten, norman, etc

As I expected, tough match:

M. Raonic 6 6 7
Y. Sugita 7 3 6

but good to have a victory under one's belt.

He also played in doubles:

Fin. P. Andujar
M. Raonic 5 7 6

A. Murray
J. Murray 7 6 10

A bit too much for the beginning.

From the score it sounds like Milos exhibited some mental toughness to pull it out. Good for him. I've always thought that as much as his serve, it was his mentality that was so impressive. I'm sure he's looking forward to his match against Rafa tomorrow. Wish there was some streaming for it. :(

That match is going to be on Thursday. Streaming might be around by then.

Canadian Tennis

Not as many points to defend if he'd played for entire year!

Which is huge. I saw Milos practicing this summer during the Roger's Cup. Wasn't moving too great them, but hitting it clean. Getting through his first round the other day had to be a huge mental victory for him.

In other news, I came across this pretty cool article on Peter Polansky with some awesome rebuttal of an (evidently) pro-american commenter.

I find that www.atdhe.me frequently streams tennis matches that don't show up on ESPN 2. I'm going to try my luck there during Raonic's next match.

livescorehunter.com is showing Raonic/nadal at 0:30) Oct 06

The arena is so dead. Must be hard to play in an atmosphere like that. I saw some video taken by a fan of Nadal's last match and it was the same even though he was playing a Japanese player so I guess that's normal.

correct. my point was that if he doesn't defend his points from early in the year his ranking will slip and he'll have to work a little harder to get his ranking back. although to your point if he stays injury free next summer he will gain points he didn't have this year so it hopefully will be a wash worst case.
