Vasek Pospisil officially reached his first ATP quarterfinal today at the Claro Open Colombia in Bogota, Colombia with a 7-5 3-6 7-5 win over James Duckworth in the 2nd round.

He'll face little known Matteo Viola of Italy in the quarterfinal match, which means his first ATP semifinal appearance is definitely not out of the question (where he could face the #1 seed Janko Tipsarevic)!

Admittedly, this is kind of cool for me as I played against Vasek once at a tournament on the Tennis BC junior circuit. Needless to say, he schooled me.

We probably have played against some of the same guys then. Small world

will be at the Roger's Cup Montreal pretty much from the qualies to the finals, writing for tennisconnected.

here's a preview article about Raonic's season so far

"As they say, with results come expectations. Milos Raonic should know.

Despite coming into this year’s Roger’s Cup ranked a career-best 13th in the world, most tennis fans seem to believe the narrative that the 6’5” Canuck with the rocket arm has been an underachiever so far in the 2013 season.

After a convincing showing at the Australian Open (loss to Federer in R4), a third title in San Jose and two successful Davis Cup ties in Vancouver, Raonic has only been 8-8 on the tour since and has lost early in the last two Slams. In Paris, he was taken out in the third round by 23rd seed Kevin Anderson, another big guy who is not quite a clay-court monster. At Wimbledon, Raonic crashed out in the second versus the unseeded Dutchman Igor Sjsling, who happened to be playing the best tennis of his career.
However, despite the recent setbacks, there’s no need to panic. In the words of Brad Gilbert, “good things are about to happen.”

Peliwo is big story. Fresh up-and-comer (and a guy nice enough to grace our forums with his presence) knocking out a top 50 player. This will be a nice boost of points for him. Hope he can continue, though Istomin is (in my opinion) a more dangerous opponent.

Awesome first round results for the Canadian guys. Let's see how far they can take it!

tennis is surging in Canada unlike the USA which will not have 1 top 2p -payer as of next Monday due to Isner's loss to Pospisil

MONTREAL -- Next week, for the first time in 40 years of ATP rankings, there will be no American men in the top 20.

That's because John Isner, who is 20th this week, is assured of dropping lower after losing Tuesday in the first round of the Rogers Cup to Canadian Vasek Pospisil 5-7, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (4).

Isner was a semifinalist at the hard-court tournament last year and failed to defend those ranking points.

Vasek Pospisil looking good against Berdych, I wonder if he can pull off the upset!

He's looking very good. I wonder if, in the back of his mind, Berdych is thinking ahead to Cincy next week and might be tempted to ration his energy.

Nice work beating Isner, Stephanek, and Berych back-to-back! Could quite conceivably beat one of the Russians to make the semifinal too.

Funny to note, this guy lost to Donald Young a couple of months back!

For all the credit raonic gets for his serve, pospisil hit one at 235kmh (135mph?) when I saw him vs stepanek. Not as much spin on the serve obviously, but he can smack the ball

Don't you think his serve has gotten better and more effective since he took a few kms off it and started going for consistency more? He's always had good athleticism for a big man and good hands and now finally his mental strength is catching up to his terrific talent and he's winning the close ones. He's broken my heart so many times over the years with his heartbreaking losses in tie breaks and three set matches where he lost the 3rd at 7-5 or 7-6. So excited for him to be doing so well this week and he for sure is a million times more exciting to watch than wet fish Milos. :p

Didn't think this warranted its own thread so I put it here:

Eugenie Bouchard has reached her 2nd career WTA semifinal and right at home to boot, at the Bell Challenge in Quebec City. She beat the #2 seed Kristina Mladenovic 6-3 6-2 to get there and will face the #3 seed Lucie Safarova next. Also, with the semifinal appearance she's projected to break into the top 50 for the first time!

On Eugenie Bouchard:

Just tweeted:

Shame on @Nike to put bright, sexy @geniebouchard at AO in frumpy, dark-gray-and-black, longish too, skirt -- good for over-the-hill matrons

And if someone didn't get it, this was another tweet, with a link showing the infamous skirt:

@Marius_Hancu
Warm congrats to @geniebouchard for her victory in the AO, notwithstanding the awful skirt in which @nike put her!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3So5wpDvboM

Q. What is the thought process behind the clothes you're wearing for this tournament, the style?

EUGENIE BOUCHARD: The clothing? It's very fashion y. I don't think you'd understand it. It's high waisted. I tuck in the top. Just a different look.

Disappointing that there doesn't appear to be any Canadians playing in the junior Australian Open draw, boys or girls. Thought there had been at least one the grand slams the last little while. Anyone know where Francoise Abanda is now? And is Carol Zhao too old for juniors now?

Reading this interview at IW, I realize the seriousness of Raonic's injury and its actuality: he started to play points only three days ago!!

---
MILOS RAONIC: Yeah. It's just tough only starting really to play points three days ago, doing any movement on court. So to get a rhythm was difficult.

I think the priority now should be still his health, nothing else.

Genie Bouchard finally getting the advice from the Doctor and changing the skirt into a great, pleated one :)

bilde

Bouchard is very fashion conscious in the chic Montreal way and no doubt also finds wearing a skirt very comfortable as well.

Have you seen her fashion spread in Flare magazine last month? That is way and beyond the long skirt she wore. Prepare yourself smelling salts if you look at it.

Great result for the Fed Cup team stalwart, Aleksandra Wozniak to qualify at IW 2014 in the 4th round:

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 1 7 0
Aleksandra Wozniak 6 6 6

I guess this is the first time Canada has two players (Bouchard is the 2nd, of course) in the 4th round of a top WTA premier event.

The bad news is Wozniak will have to play Li Na (1) in the next round, but in this shape, who knows, everything is possible :)

---
Wozniak credited her French coach Nathalie Tauziat with helping her to the victory.

"She gave me encouragement and a boost for the third set," Wozniak said. "I was playing a little too far back on the court in the second. My balls were not as deep as in the first.
---

Tauziat is doing good work with her charges. I didn't know she's Wozniak's coach.

@geniebouchard Congratulations to Genie Bouchard on winning her first WTA title!! Great fight. Good luck in Paris.

An even bigger stat is that Bouchard is just the second Canadian in the last 26 years to win a WTA title - since 1988, only she and Aleksandra Wozniak have done it (Wozniak won Stanford in 2008 ).

Other Canadians to win WTA titles: Patricia Hy-Boulais (1986 Taipei), Bassett-Seguso (1983 Hershey and 1987 Strasbourg), Kelesi (1986 Tokyo and 1988 Taranto) and Jill Hetherington (1988 Wellington).

Good news! Vasek Pospisil finally broke his long losing streak with a 6-3 3-6 6-3 win over Paolo Lorenzi today at the AEGON Championships in London. Pospisil had not won a single match since his 2nd round win over Matthew Ebden at the Australian Open in January! He was on an 8 match losing streak after that until defeating Lorenzi today.

Pospisil will face Sergiy Stakhovsky in the 2nd round.

Pospisil may have lost his 1st round match at Wimbledon but Dancevic has scored the upset over #29 seed Ivo Karlovic, winning in straight sets 6-4 7-6(6) 7-6(4)!

This is huge for Dancevic, as he lost to Jimmy Wang in the final round of qualifying but was awarded a spot in the draw as a lucky loser after Nicolas Almagro pulled out of the tournament.

He'll face either Sela or Kukushkin in the next round. Should he be able to get by either of those guys, which is doable given his win over Karlovic, he'll find himself in a potential 3rd round clash with Nadal!

Should both Nads and Frank get there, it should be very interesting. They've met before and on fast grass he should give Nads all sorts of problems.

Did Dancevic REALLY hit 47 winners to just 4 unforced errors today?? This sounds like something that needs to be seen.

It's off Youtube now but did you ever see the highlights of his Davis Cup match vs. Granollers? He's capable of treeing for entire matches like that and when he's on, he's on. Truly a sight to see.

This. He can be a very, very good player in small spurts. Looking forward to his match tomorrow.

More Wimbledon news on Canadians:

All 3 of Bouchard, Fichman and Dabrowski lost their doubles matches today.
-Bouchard was partnered with Heather Watson of the UK and lost to 6th seeds Ashleigh Barty and Casey Dellacqua 4-6 6-7(3).
-Fichman was partnered with Donna Vekic of Croatia and lost to Kimiko Date-Krumm and Barbora Zahlavova Strycova 1-6 2-6.
-Dabrowski was partnered with Alicja Rosolska of Poland and lost to 13th seeds Lucie Hradecka and Michaella Krajicek in a bit of a closer match 7-5 4-6 2-6.

Daniel Nestor is playing with usual partner Nenad Zimonjic of Serbia and they beat Italians Paolo Lorenzi and Andreas Seppi in straight sets 7-6(5) 6-3 6-4. Nestor is also in the mixed doubles draw with usual partner Kristina Mladenovic of France. They are the defending Wimbledon champions and have a bye in the 1st round.

Vasek Pospisil is the only other Canadian man in the doubles draw and he's partnering Jack Sock of the USA. They'll face Robin Haase (Pospisil's conqueror in singles) and Jesse Huta Galung tomorrow.

For us Canadians who are interested:

Obviously Raonic and Bouchard both won their 2nd round yesterday matches, both in fairly comfortable straight sets.

The other good news is that Pospisil and Sock won their 1st round doubles match yesterday quite convincingly, 6-3 6-2 6-2 over the Dutch pair of Haase and Huta Galung. They'll face the 8th seeded pair of Rohan Bopanna and Aisam Qureshi in the 2nd round.

Today, Nestor and Zimonjic are playing their 2nd round match against the German pair of Dustin Brown and Jan-Lennard Stuff. Nestor and Zimonjic currently lead 6-4 2-3.

Happy Canada day my fellow Canadians!

The Canadians are continuing their Wimbledon for the ages.

Both Bouchard and Raonic are through to their first Wimbledon quarterfinals in singles. For Bouchard it's her third major quarterfinal and for Raonic it's his second consecutive major quarterfinal and second overall. Bouchard defeated Serena Williams' conqueror Alize Cornet 7-6(5) 7-5, while Raonic defeated #10 seed Kei Nishikori 4-6 6-1 7-6(4) 6-3.

Both players' draws also cleared somewhat. Sharapova lost to Kerber, preventing a matchup with Bouchard and ditto for Nadal on Raonic's side of things. Sharapova will indeed face Kerber and Raonic will face young Aussie wild card Nick Kyrgios.

In doubles, Nestor and Zimonjic are also safely in to the quarterfinals with a straight sets victory over #16 seeds Pablo Cuevas and David Marrero 7-6(8 ) 6-4 6-4. They're waiting for the winners of the Leander Paes/Radek Stepanek and Jean-Julien Rojer/Horia Tecau match.

Pospisil and partner Jack Sock are in the 3rd round and will play tomorrow for a place in the quarterfinals against unseeded Mate Pavic and Andre Sa.

In mixed doubles, Nestor and Mladenovic are in the 3rd round and will face #12 seeds Peers and Barty for a place in the quarterfinals.

Safe to say this has been the best Grand Slam for Canadian tennis in history? There are Canadians alive in the latter stages of the tournament in every event except ladies' doubles.

Update:

Wimbledon 2014 just keeps getting better for Canada!

Eugenie Bouchard defeated #3 seed Simona Halep 7-6(5) 6-2 to advance to her first ever Grand Slam final! It is also the first time in history that a Canadian is in a Grand Slam final in singles, men or women. She will face Czech #6 seed Petra Kvitova in the final.

Additionally, her semifinal win guarantees she will be at least #7 in the world after Wimbledon, which is the highest ever ranking for a Canadian woman. Should she win the title, she would move up to #6.

Milos Raonic defeated the young Aussie wild card Nick Kyrgios yesterday 6-7(4) 6-2 6-4 7-6(4) to advance to his first ever Grand Slam semifinal. I don't know the exact year, but I do know it's the first time in over a century that a Canadian man has advanced to a Grand Slam semifinal. He'll face the King himself, Roger Federer, for a place in the final.

One piece of bad news: Daniel Nestor and Zimonjic unfortunately lost their quarterfinal in doubles to Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek 6-3 6-7(5) 3-6 4-6 today. Tough loss but we all know Nestor has no need to prove himself with a ton of majors to his credit already.

That being said, Vasek Pospisil and Jack Sock upset #2 seeds Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares 6-4 3-6 7-6(6) 6-4 to advance to the semifinals! There they will face Nestor's conquerors Paes and Stepanek for a place in the final.

This Pospisil result probably won't get much attention but it must be huge for Pospisil, who is otherwise having a miserable year. He's always been very good at doubles, along with Nestor himself helping Canada to get some key wins in Davis Cup. Hopefully this is the beginning of a great doubles career for him.
