Good news for Canadian tennis >>>

The same opponent Pelletier beat in Hawaii to win the tourney at Waikoloa in three sets (Sromova). had high hopes Pelletier would make it through the qualies. By the way we don't get much Canadian tennis news in Georgia, USA. Am I correct in assuming Marie Eve Pelletier is Helene Pelletier's daughter?

Not sure about this connection.

If you read French, this is a site which keeps one pretty well informed in Can tennis:

http://rds.ca/tennis/

For English, check
http://www.tenniscanada.ca/federation/english/
but they don't keep so up to date on news items.

There is no connection between the two. Helene Pelletier sais so once during tennis coverage on RDS.

Also Niemeyer lost yesterday in the second round of qualification. It was a bad day yesterday for Canadian tennis.

Queen's

Not too good here, unfortunately:

The Stella Artois Championships 2005

Qualifying Singles - First Round
N Djokovic (SCG) d F Niemeyer (CAN) 76(2) 64
A Sa (BRA) d F Dancevic (CAN) 63 63

Alexandra Wozniak had a very good tourney at Marseille:

http://www.itftennis.com/womens/players/activity.asp?player=35013643

beating (even if she was a LL) Vakulenko and Pastikova and losing to Kutuzova.

Eric Chvojka is getting close to #1000 (he was under 1,500 3 months ago). Played several tourneys in Venezuela.

Marius, is there a reason that you didn't mention that Marie-Eve Pelletier reached the Final of the Marseille tournament? She lost to Conchita Martinez Granados (not to be confused with one-time Wimbledon champion Conchita Martinez) rather unconvincingly.

Strange that you mentioned Wozniak getting to the quarterfinals, but not Pelletier getting to the Final...

Totally missed that, sorry.

Fred N just lost. Frank D won first set of 2nd round quali match

Unfortunately, he lost too in this marathon match:

Uros Vico ITA Winner 64 77 11

Frank Dancevic CAN 77 61 9

Vico is #250 ...

Yes, as a result, Marie-Eve achieved a:
Career-High Singles No. 107 (June 13, 2005)
this is quite good.

However, this seems to have been too late to be entered in the W main draw (she won 1st round Q).

No Canadian women will get in the main draw, I guess:

R: Court 16 - Ladies' Qual. Singles - 2nd Round
Match Statistics

Marie-Eve Pelletier CAN (4) 6 4 3

Seiko Okamoto JPN Winner 1 6 6

losing to someone classified much lower will not improve one's lot.

Wozniak in Wimbledon QF (Girls)

Aleksandra Wozniak is the only Canadian junior to pass the 1st round (the others were Philip Bester, Valerie Tetreault and Melanie Gloria):

Today:
Aleksandra Wozniak CAN (6) 5 6 6
Nikola Frankova CZE 7 4 2
thus's she's in the QF.

Go, Aleksandra!

Canada! Canada! Canada! Canada! Canada! Canada! Canada! Canada! Canada! Canada! Canada! Canada! Canada! Canada! Canada! Canada! Canada! Canada!

Tennis for a laugh is coming to Ottawa, Sept. 24. Kournakova, Courier, Johm McEnroe will be playing ...somewhere. The newspaper said when but not where. Maybe the Corel Centre, although it does seem a bit big for that. I guess Ticketmaster will have tickets later.

Thanks for the information Deuce, you're more informative than the Ottawa Citizen I'll have to fight the thousands of eager Ottawa tennis fans for a ticket before they're sold out (capacity of the Corel Centre, 14,000) LOL

Yeah the funniest thing I saw Mardy do was pour two champagne bottles on Roddick when (I think) he was talking about year-end number one at a press conference.

OK, I was of course at Montreal TMS (for 6 days).

From the Canadians, IMO the best performance was
by Rob Steckley in this match on Court 1:

K Carlsen (DEN) d (WC)R Steckley (CAN) 57 64 63

Steckley is 25, and seems to be a character. He has a small diamond (?) in his nose, a hairdo a la Rafter (before the cut!), lots of stellar tattoos on his torso which he displayed during his training with Robredo, as well as purple/pink Adidas shoes.

He moves very well, very light on his feet, a la Federer. Being over 500 on the computer and Carlsen being about 60, this was a very good result. Let's see he will progress through the ranks ... even if this comes in a late-blooming fashion.

He plays with a Dunlop M-Fil 200, reason for which he was paired for training with Robredo, probably by the local Dunlop people.

When I saw Steckley, I was immediately reminded of the Jenson brothers.

That's not necessarily a good thing.

I understand why RafterMania uses "mate" but I don't see any reason why you should. People are gonna begin to think we talk like Australians up here or worse yet; hide our young in marsupials

hehe, I didn't know Australians hide their young in marsupials! ;) ;)

As for Bester, I was reading tennis-x and they said he is just a poor man's Federer. In which case, his name should be Besterer, or to an even greater accuracy: Worsterer!

So much for tennis overtaking the NHL while it was gone. But, the Roger's Cup (men/women) had exceptional crowds this year. Also another stepping stone for Canada: Stacy Allaster, longtime Tennis Canada figurehead and tournament director in Toronto is now the president of the WTA tour.

Mwahaha, with a Canadian now in the captain's chair my dreams of ice tennis are only coming closer.

Bah! Heads are rolling at Tennis Australia. Blood everywhere. Soon I expect to start a thread entitled "Good news for Australian tennis>>>" (which will be a change from "Flip flops again").
Und zen ve vill be re-konquering ze vorld heheh...

Aleksandra Wozniak in the Mexico City Final

she lost to ARGERI, Maria-Jose (ARG) 3
6-4 4-0 Retired
but good result ...

$25,000 Challenger

Hmm, the Rexall Centre has been converted into an indoor facility? And how come there is no mention of this event on the Rexall website? http://tor.tenniscanada.ca/rexall/
Something fishy's going on with Canadian tennis and I'm not just talking about the lack of Models as ball retrievers either...

Wozniak's progress

just hit her career best:

WTA Ranking History

The tournament might be shown later on on RDS, I believe.

Marius help me.

My French has deteriorated through non use. What does "Suivi de" mean? Reading the draws I know what "contre" means but am drawing a blank on Suivi de.

Thanks
