Good news for Monfils fans :)

How come no one says ‘tennis is dead’ or complains about the ‘weak era’ when Monfils wins matches, but do that when a younger Djokovic wins matches and titles? Do these butthurt fans spot their own hypocrisy?

I think the only thing that needs spotting is how far this post is reaching. One is a perennial 5 set loser in round 1-3 and the other wins tournaments with muscle tears.....

Completely agree. I feel like he gives it his all more now than he ever has bc he knows he doesn't have much time left. Really wish he brought this kind of mentality he shows in some of his matches now along with the freak athletic peak he had. Definitely a shame :(
 
I think people forget, this is also a job for them, and a lucrative one at that. Why would he give up essentially free world travel, sponsorships, and good tournament income at any round, all while hanging with his wife who is enjoying all the same?

He has no pressure for performance, and does well. Take the checks and keep living the good life.

Good point and I’m so glad he’s still doing it, win or lose he brings such a good time to tennis :D

Sorry but i strongly disagree. You owe it to your fans to do a great performance and try to win. Its like a musician should go on stage saying he has no pressure on doing a great show for his fans, bc all that matters is family and enjoying life.

Monfils talks like some of the mothers in my kids school/kindergarden, like sports isnt about winning. Of course it is, and even kids understands it. Like a 10y old kid didnt understand when the front page in Brasils newspapers was black when they lost 1-7 to Germany? You owe it to your fans to do your best to win!

He also talks like a great family and the goal to win slams is contradictory, as if Novak, Roger and Rafa doesn't have great families. Sorry, i love Monfils, but what he says in the video i posted is BS.

And he does that in spades. He is 16/7 and has a title this year. He has been a spotlight for entertainment and a large draw at any event, so they want him to play. But really when I say pressure to win, I mean in the same regard as a top player where this years stats might be a concern and push them to retire. Monfils is playing as well as he ever has, and I would say better than his younger self even. And yes, family changes things for every player, finding that right mix of time at the job and family time, just like everyone else.

Your gauge of what you think is success, putting in a great performance, balancing family is different than actual players. Not sure why you would call BS on a guy telling you his priorities, but cheers.

Thats fair.

To me, an athlete is in the entertainment business, you can only do what you do because people are watching. So like its expected that a musician gives 110% to "win" on stage, an athlete should give 110% to win a match. Saying you dont care about winning neither a match or a grand slam as a pro tennis player doesnt do it for me. Its the kind of things Nick Kyrgios says (without comparing the two, i like Monfils, i dont like Nick!). But ofc, youre free to see it your way :)
 
Great player, just wished he didn't waste his talent. I know he says he is at peace and that is good, but in his heart he does know he had it in him to win at least one slam.

He will be missed, he did make the last 20 years just an extra bit special with his presence. But it is time.

I am expecting Wawrinka to say something very soon also.

That was his best and only chance to win a slam, would have been good to see him win it but then Stan in the final was not gonna lose either
