Good string for Pro Staff 97

My stubbornness told me I needed more control so I strung it up a little tighter, I guess I'm just going to have to get used to it again. The gut/4g rough set up I was using previously was so soft and had a lot of pocketing so it feels like a big change.

4G 16L is certainly stiffer than 4G Rough 16L. It sounds like 4G Soft may be more up your alley as its stiffness is similar to Rough but with a smooth round shape.

Well I am currently playing with this racquet so here is my opinion:

Ytex Quadro Twist - I am currently participating in this playtest. While I am not finished and have not written a review I will go ahead and tell you I hate this string. Low spin, high power, but at least comfortable for a poly. Full details will be in my review.

For me I have found that (see my sig) using a gut/syn gut in the mains and a poly in the crosses is a great setup.
The poly in the crosses allow the mains to slide around and help with spin production.
The gut/syn gut in the mains give you the power, comfort, and feel needed without being stiff and harsh.

Ultimately I would say use a natural gut in the mains but that can be really expensive. I am pretty happy with Prince syn gut there.
As for the poly in the crosses make sure it is a smooth poly and not a textured or hexagonal type poly. You need it to be smooth to allow the mains to slide across it.

If you go with that setup keep the gut/syn in the mains ~5lbs higher than the poly in the crosses.
A lower tension cross will give the main more freedom to move.
A higher tension main will help it snap back after ball contact.

Hope this helps!

What's your style of play and what's the durability you get with such setup??

Actually, upon re-reading the thread I saw that I already posted my impressions of this setp on another thread.

In short, I found that though I liked it very much, the setup would not last me more than two or three hours of play on red clay.

I have since reversed the hybrid setup ie. syn gut on crosses, poly on main:
- I gained more spin (thus more control) and way way more durability of the setup.
-I lost a bit of touch and feel

All in all the syn gut on crosses is a nice compromise setup for me.

You should try smooth 4g in your cross, it lasts longer. Or perhap Wilson Revolve? Suppose to last even longer than 4G with a slippery coating for good slide. If you go full 4g, the main will die a lot faster than gut. So might not be worth the money in the long run if you don't break gut main that often.

16g gut crossed with Revolve or Hawk17. The Hawk gives a slightly firmer ride and has a tad less overall power, but both make a comfortable, controllable hybrid. Tried shaped poly's in crosses but spin seems to be better with the round, slick stuff.

Have found this after allot of testing with the PS97 and the RF97. They both play better, more feel, and controllable power with soft mains and poly crosses. Especially noticeable serving. I go up on the mains 3lbs . Am sure the difference is greater between the two strings after hitting for an hour.

Am using similar setup, Forten sweet 16/ Tourna Black zone @ 52/56. Great setup and cost effective as well!

Oops...Brain freeze! It is the other way. Tourna black zone/Forten sweet 16 @ 52/56

thought something was wrong or... I was mixing up my already little knowledge of strings ... ;)

has anyone strung up natural gut at 60lb or more in the mains and can share their experience ? Im thinking to go up in tension to tame the power.

well, this not gonna be the answer you're looking for... but consider that having to go higher than 60 to tame gut's power is defeating the whole purpose (sort of). If you want to tame power, then why not look to other less powerfull strings, it would also be much cheaper.

Or alternatively examine if you can improve/compensate on technique... and do the hard work for it :-)

Full bed of Cyclone 1.3mm strung in mid 50s seems to work pretty well. Long fast strokes.

Considering trying something like Diadem Solstice 1.3 but getting the impression it will be similar.

Anyone comment on full bed of say Hyper-G or Technifibre Black Code 4S? Looking for more control potential. Racquet is plenty powerful as is.

Playing with the RF97 at 57/54 with Gut/poly. Been playing with the PS97 a good bit and am interested in gut/poly. Would you guys recommend stringing the PS97 the same tension, 57/54?

Guessing it will feel harsher since the racket has less weight than RF so more shock is transmitted to the arm. so maybe I'd drop couple kilos on there....

But see my sig, and you'll that on gut poly I go for average 40... 44/40 so tensions vary widely based on body strength, power & acceleration, technique, arm sensitivity, ball type, court type, etc

There's not much sense in asking for tensions IMHHO.... you have to start at your preferred baseline tension and adjust....

Contacted a professional stringer and he said string it the same gut/poly tensions that I use with the RF97.( 55/52-57/54) Start at the lower end of the tension range that I use. 55/52. Sound advice
