Rare video of high level non-pro tennis. And another interesting one.

Ok thats crazy...

I mean ive made so much improvement in the past months and sometimes I hit really crazy shots and im like damn that was good... but compared to these two guys its absolutely nothing, on a whole different level..

I mean if u look at that top 100 U18 female and the guy, those two are hitting the ball really well, lots of spin nice pace, and it would overwhelm alot of posters on this forum.. but compared to those 2 guys in the other video (5.5 and 6.0) it looks like childs play, the shots are just on a whole different level, feel much much heavier.

@mad dog1 @J011yroger @rogerroger917

What do you guys think, is it at all in the realm of possibility for a rec player to ever achieve the ability to hit these kind of heavy shots? Obviously im not talking about placement, accuracy and all, thats no doubt impossible to achieve..
But simply if its at all atainable to get the ability to hit such a heavy ball as these two are hitting here even if its not really that consistent and a bit rare meaning you really have to hit the ball perfectly.. If not possible, what do you think is the reason for that?

I wasn't that impressed with the two guys in the first video,
though they're pretty decent.

And to answer your question, it depends on the rec player.

IF you're athletic, fit, and have the right skill-set, then it's
quite doable.

Hit against a wall/backboard everyday for a month. If you
still suck, pickleball might be a better choice

Or you can just keep hoping you'll magically get better, a
notion 'thats crazy'.

They seem only decent to you? I mean tactics and quality of play aside, the shots seem extremely high level to me, that blond guy serve seems like it would easily read 130mph on a radar gun, and the few shots (that they werent serve volleying) like the ones at the start seem to have extreme penetration through the court.

what NTRP are you?

Do you realise a 5.5 (the lower ranked player in that video) is like the top 1% of tennis players in the world, if not higher? I think we have a few legit 5.0s here, but they're rare. I dont think anyone is claiming above 5.0 ability on here, not even coaches.

A lot of people on this forum have started as beginners as adults, and they've been playing for 5, 10 years and more. I think a 4.5 is a realistic goal for them. Maybe 5.0 if they're young, strong and naturally good at sports.

You're saying just go hit against a wall for a month every day and you'll instantly get to 5.5 ranking? Having hit a lot against the wall myself this past year, while i think its a great training tool and has improved my game, I'm for sure not a 5.5

Huh? They look like former futures level players.

I can hit that quality of ball but don't move as well or have their level of shot tolerance or finishing game.

Someone posted a rating scale here before comparing different rankings with gender, and other rating systems. I can't remember exactly, but i think 6.0 male is likely to be very competitive with female professionals who are current pros lol. Those guys are insanely good.

Really hard for rec players to hit this quality shot consistently. Requires good stroke technique, spacing, and footwork.

The blonde guy has a big serve, no doubt, but his groundstrokes don't look as good.
(doesn't help with all the S&V'ing)

I guess it depends on your perspective.

I could hang, so ....

I would consider myself capable of at least 5.0.

Being a 5.0 has a lot to do with your level of athleticism.

But IF you are a good athlete, hitting against the wall will let you know how good you can get, or can't.

Go to 1:20, now that's some top notch hitting!

Of course you would consider it. You hit against a wall. They’re terribly easy to beat—all you have to do is lob. What you don’t understand is that your ability to crabwalk and hit off your back foot doesn’t translate that well to actual competition. Until you actually have any results, all your claims hold no weight. That said, I would love to see you try. Perhaps you might gain a better grasp on reality.

Hitting against a wall is the ultimate test of how good you can get.

You can't beat the wall, so instead you just denigrate what you can't tolerate.

I love how you focus on the minor negative aspects of my hitting just for fun,
when I'm tired and unfocused, and ignore the major aspects of my big hitting
and good movement.

Maybe you're just too crabby of an SOB, projecting and deflecting, to notice.

Hey, if you can watch me hitting and just be derogatory, maybe it's your bad attitude tainting your
perspective and perception.

The former ATP top 300 pro I hit with, and a college woman player, sure didn't think that way.

But hey, obviously some hacker schmuck like you would have a much 'better grasp on reality'
then those 2 accomplished nobodies.

Yes I checked your vids, must've of missed the 5.0 level play, just as I've missed how you could think the two blokes aren't absolute fantastic tennis players

It looks like even 4.0 level requires a lot of consistency and skill.

4.0s definitely have more consistency and comfortable with their strokes but more importantly their fitness/conditioning is good. They might not be super great athletes like 4.5s but they are fit. As a rec player, you can definitely reach 4.0 realistically but it would take some work and only way is from playing more matches.

Any time you look at level in a Nationals setting, you can just count them up in ratings. I played a few warm up matches against a 4.0 and a 4.5 players for the Nationals here in Surprise. My 4.0 friend immediately moved to 4.5 and the 4.5 player I hit with I believe plays 5.0. So as the top players in a rating at Nationals that is pretty expected.

Basically these guys playing 4.0 is really more 4.5 level. Even there this is crazy consistent and longer rallies than most matches at any level.

FiReFTW

@ChaelAZ said it well, those national 4.0 are really very good 4.5 players.

But that being said, NTRP ratings are st*pid and inaccurate, these "4.0s" play better than many 4.5s, then there are 4.5s that play much worse than this, then there are 4.5s that play much better than this and actually are pretty much 5.0.

NTRP is d*mb, UTR is much more accurate and dependable, as long as the person has enough matches in a certain period.

NTRP is so inaccurate that a certain 4.0 can double bagel another 4.0, then another 4.0 can double bagel the person that double bageled another 4.0, ridicilous.

In UTR if someone with 7UTR players someone with 7UTR its going to be competitive.

I would say, dark shirt guy looks very technically sound, and swings vigorously, but his shots don't bother the orange shirt too much. Both his Nadalish technique and (possibly) light stick (although stiff) might be responsible for lack of penetration. Together with his opponent being very sound in getting to balls this is a matchup for those rallies... Though, very limited number of mistakes is remarkable.

ChaelAZ

Rating is a formulation of how well you compete in rated match over a year. I have seen plenty of players who are obviously better in skills than their NTRP is. Been there plenty myself.

So these guys might be able to compete well sometimes but not all the time. Maybe this player to player match-up makes the competition as such. Lots of factors there that don’t always equate to really being a higher level.

But Yeah, you should expect top players at level to be some of the best you see at that rating.

Probably posting from the court between sets.

Whatever level you call it, 4.0 or 3.5, I don't mind, but this is the kind of tennis I play. Consistent and fairly aggressive, intensive. Over years you can fine tune your play to have better shot selection and a bit more variety instead of only loopy high topspin.

If you play like the guy in blue, practically no one in weekend mornings can beat you. :) You can see he has match experience.

At what level do people stop making lots of silly unforced errors?!

ATP and WTA pros make them all the time so @J011yroger already answered your question, its all mental, and even the best get tight sometimes in crucial moments, in practice they can hit 100 out of 100 if they really focus, but match is a whole different thing.

If you ever get a chance to attend these top level juniors events, you basically get to see play at what many futures, college, and even pro level matches give you in terms of competition and play. What is interesting is, for this kinda match there are only a handful of people watching! I've been to matches like this and was amazing to watch, with just the parents and family there. Crazy.

For me, and what I like to promote as the #1 attribute players can develop, it is the footwork here that really stands out. Wish it was a longer video of the whole match, but a good 5 minutes to watch.

I agree they are amazing. They move so well as if they carry no weight, so effective and elegant like a cat.

I agree, footwork is important and many times horrible at rec level, I need to focus hard aswell, im very prone to getting lazy, really need to focus and tell yourself to move ur feet, be super active, hyped, jump, split step, hop, all the time, like on drugs, that makes a huge difference.

Did he lose?

It happens :) He'll learn and improve only a matter of time. I like his intensity which is usually not found with recreational players.

Haha watch the game, interesting how it changes. The blue guy is playing himself going for too much and getting frustrated, the orange guy is playing the opponent.
