Can we now say Goran is the best coach ever. Easy to take already top player like Novak, Andy, and Andre to major titles. but to take at best Mediocre player with Mediocre serve and mental attitude to US open title ? That has to be something special... Correct ?

Goran Ivanisevic has clearly been a huge help in improving Marin Cilic's serving, and his aggressive play. Cilic is playing more relaxed and lights out stuff.

yeh his really made his mark now i must admit, i just hope it was the advice from goran and nothing else!

Yeah, I like all these recent influences from 90's players Becker, Ivanesvic, Chang and Edberg. In the order of the most noticeable, IMHO:

1. Aggressive serve return. Generally take more chances and sometimes go for a winner off return.
2. Aggressive serving.
3. Going more for the winners off ground strokes.
.
.
4. More net play : this one is still in question, IMHO. I'm not sure if Federer
benefited from this or not yet. But generally I'm seeing more net plays from
many top players now.

So happy for Goro and Cilic. Man Cilic played LIGHTS F|-|CKING OUT.

Btw, goran still looking pretty damn good at a tender age of 42. Wish I look that good at his age. He looks like he can come on court and hit a few.

Goran's style is evident in Cilic. That big serving style and the ferocious returns. Perhaps the most significant improvement was in Cilic's mind. Maybe Goran appreciated how much mental effort is required to win a slam and transferred that knowledge to Cilic based on his personal experiences and learning.

Or Cilic isn't psycho like Goran is.

just because a guy can't control his personal peculiarities doesn't mean he doesn't know what it takes for someone else to do it. goran was always a pretty thoughtful guy, pretty great to see his accumulated wisdom paying off in his pupil.

He was still blasting serves over 140 a few years ago, even with age and multiple shoulder surgeries.

no way where'd u see this. Dude is aging well. glad to see cuz he's one of my favs. especially after that 2001 wimbledon.

Exhibitions with I think it was Ljubicic. He played a few matches, and got serves over 140 in every match. I believe he could only really try to rip it for a couple service games before his shoulder started to feel it, but for a few games he could still bomb serves like he could in his prime.

So it is possible for OLD man to serve 140 MPH ? WOW, had NO idea. I gotta Keep trying that at practice. MAYBE I still have a chance.

Cilic and Goran probably just clicked. Goran said he thought he could improve Cilic's serve, which he has. It doesn't necessarily mean that anyone coached by Goran will improve.

his well-known wisdom seems to do marvels on cilic... ;)
90's coaches rock !

So true. Cilic from the 2014 US Open is a top 5 best server on tour right now. Considering the fact that there are still guys like Isner, Raonic and Karlovic that says a lot.

His offence has improved, that's a fact, but his DEFENCE is what made the difference. And the serve of course xD.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this year tennis-wise. Still bummed Federer didn't get an 18th, but Cilic and Wawrinka finally living up to their potential (I've thought for years Cilic was good enough) is awesome to see.

Exactly .....you are dealing with countrymen who are also some of the tallest players of all time .

Clearly they clicked.
