Gosen Pro Form Tuff

I play with the Prince Thunder 970 (dinosaur, I know). they are strung with Wilson NXT 17. I recently bought a used Prince Thunder 970 on ****, it came with Gosen Pro Form Tuff which are at fairly low tension as the string moved all over the place. I was surprised with the performance of the string, it is crisp and seem to generate good spin. I liked it. This got me thinking about replacing the Wilson NXT. Most tennis stores do not carry Gosen Pro Form Tuff and I do not want to buy a reel of 600 ft just for testing out the strings.

Any suggestion would be welcome.

I bought a reel of Pro Form Tuff maybe 5 years ago. As far as I remember, the reel(16+sets) cost only a few more dollars than one single set of NXT at the time. You could also experiment with different tensions or hybrids with all that extra(15+ full sets) of string. Two NXTs cost more than a reel of PFT so if you play just as well with the PFT as the NXT then the value is definitely there and you could be saving $15+ per string job.

The string itself just moves. Many solid core synthetics with an outer wrap tend to do that as a whole string bed.

Which string do you like better and how much more do you like that string?

Gosen PFT

I was thinking along the line of using a reel of PFT for testing, I was also looking to see if there are other strings that may give more spin and pop than PFT. I do like the performance of PFT.

PFT is your standard basic synthetic. I personally think that in a hybrid as a cross, most solid core synthetics have a similar enough feel that paying say $7-8+ for a single set of SCsynthetic to use for ONLY cross strings does not justify the cost for me. I rarely string poly/SCsynthetic for myself anymore but if I do I just use one of the softer cheaper solid core synthetics.

You could get more pop by dropping the tension but you will probably get some drop in control. You could get more pop with a multi or gut but you usually give up some spin. You could get more spin with a thinner gauge or with poly strings. I'm not really sure on how tension affects spin. Then there is also hybrids...:?

There are just too many strings out there that we would need more information to make recommendations so how about starting with these ?s. 1)Do you have a price range for sets or reels? 2)What is your play level and how many hours does it take you to break PFT and NXT? 3)What other setups(string and tension) have you used, likes/dislikes?

Also, how much do you like PFT compared to NXT?

PFT appears to be a basic, old-school 15L Nylon.
A dinosaur string to match the racquets.
$25 a reel seems cheap enough to experiment with.
Toalson Leoina66 would be a good alternative if you only wanted a couple of sets.

As a synthetic I always liked Pro Form Tuff in 15L. The nearest comparison is Prince Tournament Nylon 15L but that feels horrible in comparison. PFT has nice feel to me. Dirt cheap too.

Nice ressurection of an over 10 year old thread. I string nylon mains and poly crosses for my customers with big light oversize racquets and they like the strings with no complaints.

For me prince tournament nylon mains with a thin poly cross stopped snapping back quickly due to getting gummed up when notched. Does pro form tuff work better in this setup?

AFAIK ProForm Tuff has been discontinued - on their web site they say "limited quantities" for 15L and 16.
