proform tuff is cheap but it's nylon. even the most basic syn gut will probably be better. that being said, try it - you may like it and never have to spend huge amounts of $ on string again. the best player at my club uses nylon string similar to proform
I actually like the Pro Form quite a bit, it's very crisp, has surprisingly good spin generation for the gauge, and isn't an uncomfortable string. Tension maintenence surprised me, it wasn't the greatest, but it wasn't horrible. Durability for the gauge might be a little on the low side, but for the price, the string is a definite winner. It's very similar (if not identical) construction to the Prince Tournament Nylon, but IMO plays a little crisper. You might like it, it's worth a try, IMO. I don't think the micro is MUCH better for the extra money. Both are excellent values, you really have to think of WHY you're buying the string to justify any extra costs for extra performance. The Micro will serve you better in hybrids, and will do better in full jobs, but how much better? Well, that's up to player preferences.
Forten Competition Nylon and Ashaway Liberty are two other nylon strings that are cheap as water. They're both available in the thinner 16 gauge as well. Ashaway gets a lotta love 'round here, although I've heard that there's been some problems in the installation, though I've never strung it before. I personally prefer Forten because it's the cheapest of the lot and suitable as a cross string in hybrids. In a full job, it plays well for about an hour before plummeting and then snapping.
ProForm is a decent string to keep around as a reel for customers, but as a stringer, I wouldn't hesitate to go with a thinner gauge for myself.
I prefer the Pro Form to both of these strings, but i've only hit with the Ashaway liberty 16g, and it snaps on me frequently when stringing. I don't think I've gotten a bad batch, but I am wondering if it just doesn't like a true constant pull. I think the 16g of this softer style nylon is already stretching it (no pun intended) to it's limits. I think the 15l would perform admirably, judging from the construction of the 16g. I prefer a crisper feel, though, so I would probably stick with ProForm if i had to choose. The ashaway has potential, but i haven't been able to string it above ~55-58 CP (consistently).
